    • RE: If I were Larry, I would…

      @Veqryn:

      I’d rather carriers got +1 attack and -1 defense (become 1/1 units) instead of up their cost.

      I would also like tactical bombers to go to 10 cost, since they are 3/3s that are only 4/3 under certain circumstances.

      I like bombers as they are.  With the bigger map, it is much tougher to get in range of the things you really want to bomb.  Plus, factory damage rules, (and tech for radar and improved factories) help to limit the effectiveness of bombers.

      One prime reason we see less attacking is that we now have 2 types of infantry (infantry and mech) which are both 1/2 units.
      While artillery is still around, Tanks got increased to 6 cost, making them a luxury purchase that rarely happens.

      If you want to see more action, reduce tank cost to 5 and make them 3/2 units instead of 3/3.  (like classic)

      I think part of it is the group you play with. The group I normally play in person with tends to be full of agressive but tactically sound players. We don’t turtle and if the people playing the Axis want a chance of victory they have to be very agressive. I still buy as many tanks as possible with Germany or Russia because even at 6 cost they are a good buy. Germany can still tank shock the hell out of Russia especially with Japan assisting. I have never seen(in our games) Russia get units into Africa. Especially not by transport. Axis players do their very best to sink the allied ships and a transport trying to reach Africa would be sunk by someones fighters. And frankly the way we play if Russia wants to pull units it needs to defend Russia and put them someplace else they can do so by all means. Just makes killing them that much easier. They are already hurting because Germany turn 1 should be able to make it impossible for the UK to land on their shore by taking their fleet out.

      Granted tech rolls and results can cause some weird changes. I have seen Japan run totally wild because they got shipyards for example, ditto with the USA, then once the USA is at war you are in battleship and carrier hell. One game we had the USA get shipyards and supersubs in the first two turns. Then we had the USA uboat fleet that annoyed the living hell out of Japan(because their fighters couldn’t sink the subs).

      Who wins often depends on who plays what nation and also on dice rolling.

    • RE: Axis time strategy

      @Paksos:

      A J3/J4 DoW in my view is usually because Japan has accepted that his role is to help Germany/Italy win in Europe. Consequently, he’s probably going for China to get a bit of extra $$$ and Russia to ease Germany’s Barbarossa while keeping America off Germany’s back long enough that Germany can get into a  better position to deal with him when the time comes.

      That’s what i did with my last Japan game and we had a runaway victory.  :-D

      That is also exactly how we won with the Axis. Japan managed to hold the USA off by keeping its fleet together at all times and by investing in a couple of aircraft carriers. That changes the battle when they can bring all those extra planes into the navel battle. Have the USA come to you. Don’t go to them. That way you can scramble those 3 extra planes off your island. And for godsakes keep your fleet together and intact. Japans first goal is China. After that help Germany take out Russia. Then Focus on India. But invade by land not by see. Let the USA try to smash a fleet full of fighters. Be creative and think outside the box and you can hold the USA off, that is the only other thing Japan has to really do, is keep the USA focus away from Germany and they are winning half the battle already.

    • RE: What Do Do With French Units (F1) That Survive German Attack

      You can leave Southern France for Italy if you are uncomfortable with splitting your ground forces up to much. They can take it easily. It slows them down in Africa if they need to take Southern France but that ground can be made up.

      @robbie358:

      KillO, I think you’re probably right.  I’m just clueless as to why people just HAVE to hit the UK navy turn 1 at the cost of sending those planes into France.  Then you wonder why you lose everything.
      I’d rather the British survive (minus their destroyers) and keep all my mech and tanks for Russia, but that would just make too much sense.

      And hurry up and post here before the topic gets sent to “House Rules”.

      Its quite simple. UK fleet has to go away. Has to…otherwise you will have the UK on your doorstep early and often. Germany needs its forces to attack Russia. In the Alpha 3 build(and I believe in the Alpha 2 build) Germany has more then enough to both take France and take out the UK fleet. Unless they are screwed by bad rolling. If France lives past turn 1 you can call game right there. Germany needs the money from taking France.

      I have never seen a failed France attack that Germany has recovered from.

    • RE: Question

      @soulfein:

      @Zhukov44:

      Why bother if I’m not serious about the Sea Lion bluff and USA can buy bombers to reinforce London anyway?

      to deny uk investing early in middle east, thus giving ita a real chance to make 30+ early on, instead of getting convoyd out of the game without doing anything at all.

      plus the initial naval investment (ac+trans) actually helps ger against barb, enabling ger to have a solid stack drinking in novgorod g3.

      Invest with what fleet lol? UK fleet should be gone turn 1. Its not that hard to sink it. Just use fighters and fleet correctly. And if you want to annoy the UK take Scotland turn 2. But build armor for Russia. 1 tech token and 4 armor…best German 1 build I have found for Alpha 3. You are not going to be able to pull off Sealion unless the UK is stupid and even if you pull it off you bring USA into the war a turn early for which Japan is not thankful to you. You won’t normally be able to hold the UK and build enough for Russia, depending on turn 1 USA builds. If they think you are going to sealion you can bet they are going to build to counter turn 1.

      I have said this before and I will say it again. If France doesn’t fall and the UK has fleet left you can pretty much call the game turn 1. It digs Germany into a huge hole they have a hard time recovering from.

    • RE: When do you begin Barbarossa?

      We did Japan turn 2 and then Germany turn 3. I was going to go turn 2 with Germany but by taking one extra turn I could put all of my German units exactly where I wanted them in terms of attacking. Idk why people are talking about if UK has fleet around the UK.  That should never happen. Germany’s two goals turn 1 are to take France(maybe leaving South France for Italy if you want them to get extra income) and take out the UK fleet(other then in the Med, that is Italy’s job). With fleet + airforce you have more then enough to do it(unless the dice screw you).  As long as you do Germany by turn 3 I think you are good. For no reason should Russia be able to attack first. Also Germany shouldn’t attack alone either. I think Japan is a better option then Italy as a partner. Germany builds as many tanks as it can afford.

    • RE: Ideas for Russia in Alpha 3?

      I have played vs people online with TripleA and my last game(the first one with the new setup) Germany has more stuff. In fact I ended up with Germany(I like playing Allied nations if possible, and the USA if its my pick first) and first turn I took All of France but Southern France which I left for Italy(the Axis players exchanged e-mails and made a game plan, not sure if the allied players did the same). I also took one of the allied leaning neutrals. Then I made slow moves to regroup my forces into groups that I wanted. I faked sea lion by buying some transports turn 1 and sinking the Uk fleet.  Italy screwed up badly due to bad dice rolling and left almost the entire UK med fleet intact(which closed the Africa option pretty much). Turn 3 I attacked Russia easily pushing their front lines back. I should note that I do almost all armor buys with Germany. Germany can build a ton of armor over 3 turns and if they can keep their fighters they can do a lot of damage with that combo.

      Also Japan starting attacked Russia turn 2 and that helped. With the amount of fighters they have they easily blow past the 18 inf stack of death. And they they were able to tank blitz pretty easily through Russia with part of their forces. The extra income they got from it allowed them to build more fighters and more fleet to keep the USA busy. Russia started to crumble they got pushed back each turn. By turn 9 all of Russia had been taken. The UK got there too late to make a difference. And the USA was never able to get enough forces gathered to bring an invasion fleet over to Europe, not in time to make a difference anyway. Each time they tried they lost ground to Japan in the other ocean. They did manage some landings later in the game(it lasted 12 turns before the Axis could grab enough victory city’s with both Germany and Japan grabbing the needed amount on the same turn), however they never got enough of a foothold to make a difference. I kept taking back the lost areas with my German forces. The UK could do nothing once I took their fleet out because every time they tried to make a new fleet I sunk it with my rebuilt fleet + fighters/tac bombers/bombers.  By the time the USA brought enough that I couldn’t sink it it was already too late. India was on the verge of falling and it fell turn 11 to Japan. It would have fallen the turn before but the UK player made a desperate counter attack on both the German and Japan forces closing in and managed to save themselves for a turn.  Both Germany and Japan had over 100 income each turn before the game ended. I had enough as Germany to build throw away delaying fleets each turn to keep the USA for doing a major navel action in Europe.

      I will say this though. It didn’t help that the allies for some reason decided it would be a good idea to attack the  neutrals(they thought Spain would be an easier route into Europe then France) but that allowed the Axis to grab tons of free troops and provided us a quick route(through Turkey) into the middle east.

      The point is if Russia can’t hold back the tide long enough they are in trouble. Unless the German player waits past turn 4 to attack(no reason to allow Russia to keep building by doing that though) then they can attack first. But the game is decided on the first big battles if Russia decides to put all if its stuff on the front lines. If not and they try to attack tanks plus support with guys, good luck with that. They tried that a couple of times and it worked once but it cost them the army they had been building to defend Moscow.

      My advice for Russia. Build armor as much armor as you can get away with. I wouldn’t pull the 18 guys back but I would not group them all together were Japan can wipe them out in a single round with their fighters.  Spread them out and force Japan to go place by place to take it. No free blitzing. Russia is down to praying that Germany loses its fighters or that the UK isn’t income screwed in Europe, or that America can get over there to help out quick enough. One thing the allies didn’t do is send massive amounts of fighters into Russia. That would have delayed things I think. But once Germany gets rolling income wise its very very hard to stop if Germany makes the proper builds and luck doesn’t go totally against them.

    • RE: "Cone of Silence"

      Talking with allies is a must because for either side to win they have to have a plan. You can’t just add lib the entire game and expect to win. As for talking to other players that is just the fun in the game. Make them second guess their moves.

      Also when we play with newer players both sides offer good advice. Now that being said while it may be good advice its not always the BEST possible advice for the situation. Its still a good and valid move though.

      How was Russia able to advance that far? It shouldn’t be possible without direct America help. The moment that Russia moves beyond poland in Global you can call the game right there.

      For Russia if you have 4 turns before your attacked build units in the correct order(IE men first then tanks not the other way around) because men take longer to reach the front lines.

    • RE: Is Germany strong enough in Alpha?

      “The Russians MUST hold.”

      That sums up how the allies win. The battle comes down to Germany and Russia with the newest rules. So yes the best allied player must play Russia. The next best should play the USA and then the other one the UK. Its really hard to screw up as the USA unless you play your cards close to the vest. The USA has a huge income edge and it needs to throw that weight around. As long as they do that and Russia holds then the allies will be fine.  Again if the allies are not winning at least 50% of the time then the allied group isn’t attacking enough. I can see the thinking is that the axis attacks and the allies defend but the allies have to know how and when to attack. If in WW2 the allies hadn’t launched bold attacks then they would have never beaten Germany or Japan.

      No…I believed it was changed that the axis have to hold all of their capitals in order to win as well. Otherwise its just stupid and very poor game design.

      I think in Poland, the calvary was attacking German inf, and then tanks showed up.

      You would be wrong to think that. Polish calvary and German tanks never clashed. The Polish horsemen ran like hell when they saw tanks because they weren’t insane.

    • RE: Best Russian Buys…

      Russia normally(at least in the games I play) ends up on the defense at first. Thus a mix of guys and tanks is best I belive. Guys to soak up front line damage and tanks one area behind to counter attack if possible. And if Germany doesn’t attack then you push forward with the guys and the tanks.
