      @CWO:

      I suspect that Montreal’s new Mayor, Michael Applebaum, the first Jewish person to hold that office, would be highly offended to see the Nazi swastika on the same t-shirt as the City of Montreal logo.  The Balkenkreuz would be a better choice politically – and it would even provide a nice (albeit vague) connection to Place Ville Marie and the cross on Mont-Royal.

      I suspect you’re right. I’m now leaning in that direction, too. Now with 100% less swastika.

      Hi all,

      we played AA50 on Sunday and I’ve had the game on my mind a little too much since then. So, Monday night I put in some extra hours (I’m an illustrator by trade) and made this thing.

      I’m not quite sure if it’s finished or if my playing group’s going to want them made, but on it you can see a German MP-40 submachine gun, the UK, USA, USSR, Chinese, Japanese, German, Italian and Hungarian flags, and that flower-y thing in the medal is Ville de Montreal’s civic logo. I’m not entirely sold on including the Chinese and Hungarian flags, but I saw some places on the gun for extra belligerents and thought I’d go for it.

      I felt bad about how abstract the Chinese flag and the MP-40 are, but when you’re working with such a thick and uniform lineweight only so much detail can be included. Also, I need to feel out how comfortable my guys are with wearing swastikas (however small) and decide whether to stick with them or replace them with an iron cross.

      Anyone else make anything like this for their players? I’m curious. If so, this might be a good place to post them.

      OK. Keep good. May all your rolls be ones.

      @Gargantua:

      Do wilder, brighter, colors REALLY draw in younger players? I don’t think so…

      Whether it’s true or not, the idea is accepted as true by a lot of designers. I’m an illustrator that works with packagers every once in a while, and they certainly like asking for things to be brighter and bolder when dealing with a younger market.

      Montreal, QC, Canada. A&A50 and Spring 1942. Usually we have a full table, but I’m excited about finding vet players to join.

      I can’t figure out how to put a location on the map, but I’m on the Plateau in Montreal, QC. Canada. Rue de Mentana, if it makes a diff.

    • RE: Just How Old Are We Axis and Allies Players?

      I’m 33 now, and probably played my first game in high school back in 1993. We played Classic often during school, then stopped 'til I was in university in the early 2001. At that point I convinced a roommate we should split a copy, and when we’d move on (as uni roommates do) we’d have a match and whoever won would get to keep the game.

      Of course, his awful girlfriend moved in (without any discussion with the rest of us) and the place turned into a hornet’s nest. That house championship game never happened, but I’m pretty sure I would’ve won it. The roommate forgot the game and I came out of the mess one copy of Classic richer.

      When I moved to Montreal two years ago, my priority was to get a playing group going as quickly as possible. Now, we play a full table of six every month or so. Game night, 20 years later, is still my favourite night of the month.

    • RE: POLL: What do you love customizing

      I’ve made a custom chart or two (including a National Objectives chart for AA50) and I just finished up some “Montreal Axis & Allies Club” shirts for my group. Neither is as big a project as painting an army or building a table, but still practical or pretty exciting to me.

      I’ll post pics of both once I have the right to. Dang newbie status.

      @empireman:

      Things i dont like
      -Ottaman are teal
      -Austria hungary is light green
      -Diamond map
      -Italy is orange

      I second all of this. Too many bright non-military colours, even though AA Global proved that scheme could cover a very diverse palette without going “clown car.” Also, while previous maps have warped geography, never have landmasses been warped so much. At least lately.

      In the game’s defence, though: the geographical space they had to fit in was awkward, and I’m sure they agonized over the diamond design for a long time. And who knows how much pressure they felt from Hasbro overlords to attract younger players with wilder, brighter, colours.

      Just my two cents. I hope they sell a lot of copies and find that younger fan base, too.

    • RE: How many players?

      I know this is an old old thread, but being a new guy on the board I’m still curious: how many players do you usually have at the table per game? Or are you playing mostly one-on-one TripleA?

      Our group is lucky enough to do a full table of 5-6 players once every month or two, with varying skill levels throughout. I think that might be exceptional?

    • RE: Poll: What A&A Games do you play?

      These days it’s either A&A50 or (if we can’t get six players) Spring 1942. Before that it was a steady diet of classic for 15 years. I’m amazed how long it took us to switch.

    • RE: Images of the Map?

      I feel bad saying this, but I’m not too excited by the look of the map and that means a lot to me. If this was in the AA50 or Spring 1942 colour scheme I’d be all over it. Right now I’m hesitant.
