    • RE: Looking for Breakdown comparison of global war versions

Personally I have created my own little diplomatic rule set, allowing for the ability to influence nearly every nation into any faction. Basically no factions exist and must be formed. With a predisposition via events of following historical paths.

Very interesting! Curious if you want to share this.

My current dream is to design and print my own map that would somehow make the impossible possible. A larger, scaled in version of Europe, where as keeping Africa, South America and all else on the map and not in inset boxes.

Excellent Idea hope this works for you. Ideas like this are what got me hooked to this game type. So much imagination and creative action on this site keep at it.

      Thanks R

Pic of tiles. Labels from packs along with case.
There are extra colours here so we may either incorporate new types of  bases or change colour scheme with play testing.

Attached a photo of the facilities on a referance sheet. The white tile on the blue background is place upon a major factory oob cardboard piece. You can see the grey around it. Not an exact size match, But almost.

Colours were chosen based upon visibility on the map and piece count. Red or brown were only options for naval base due to count. Random colour counts in packages, and the store needs to restock thanks to me.

    • Cheap! In a hurry customization of global ana1940 for 1936 hbg map

Started playing our first game 1936 setup of global war HBG second edition map. First thing you notice is that there are a lot of extra land and sea zones. We have been playing ana 2 ed. Global 1940. We have no other pieces to use and wanted to try this out before we bought additional sculpts we may or may not need. Personally really enjoy the variety of units but using 1940 global pieces we had to get creative.

1)Facilities are both more numerous but also have extra types: 47 naval bases, 19 shipyards, 1 sub base, 31 airfields,  18 minor factories, 16 major factories, 6 coastal arty, 3 forts and 2 fortified borders. All in the setup alone. We either had no equivalents or not enough.
As a solution I found 3/8 glass mosaic tiles at Michaels. Brand name is artmind classico mosaic tiles $10 a bag. Come in mixed packs of 15 solid colours, are smooth topped rounded corners, bottom is smooth and won’t  damage the board.(inspect before use each pack had damaged tiles very sharp glass) I needed to buy 3 packs and a case with dividers. These are near identical in size to oob cardboard markers but easy to pickup. With the smooth flat tops we will either get decals or something to label these in the future

2)Extra unit types, there are a pile of these! Thankfully local game store sells coloured chips that interlock $4 for 50pack (koplow dice co.) with oob grey, green and red counter chips. Regular stacks but with a non counted coloured marker chip placed on top. This was our quick fix.
A)Militia = inf with orange chip, because they cant move.
B)Out dated or lower value unit variations white chips.
      Examples:
      Coastal sub= sub& white chip
Torpedo boat destroyer= destroyer& white chip
      Light tank= tank&white chip
      Cavalry=mech&white  chip
Light aircraft carrier= aircraft carrier&white chip
C)marine inf = Inf with blue chip
D)Airborne inf = inf with purple chip
E)motorised inf = inf with black chip.  Reg. Inf that move 2, and tow arty/aa along.
F)Special units nation specific, like Italian black shirt militia. And upgraded units through tech like jet fighter or heavy tanks. Denoted as unit with a pink chip, same as previous examples in white.

These were the colours in stock so their the ones we used, but others are available. Bring an oob chip to test interlock for stacks (store was willing to let us test before purchasing). Classic ana chips dont interlock with newer versions FYI.

    • RE: Printing for global 1936 rules colour or black?

So its done. Printed rules and Netherlands expansion rules black. Ledge able easy to read. Cost about 7$ 11cents a page at staples.

Colour for all nations setup and reference sheets, including Netherlands and Anzac. Exceptional readability every nation has a different coloured background and easy visualization to roundals and map colours. Cost about 16.50$ 39cents a page also staples.

Thanks for input Munck! Happy I saved the money on the rules but worth the cost on the ref. Sheets really easy association with the map this way.

Found the entire printout to have very small margins.  As a result holepunch is not recomended, you lose ability to read everything  (although I just realized you should be able to edit this pre printing). Bought a bunch of clear plastic sleeves (90) and (2) 1inch binders 10$ total, cheapest I could get. One binder for rules double sided in sleeves. Second binder setup/reference sheets, single sided all in sleves so they stay nice but easy for each player to have and reference if wanted this binder realy only for cleanup and storage.

So finally all in cost was about $34 cheaper, waterproof and organized. Versus all coloured 40$ no waterproof and just loose sheets.

    • Printing for global 1936 rules colour or black?

Wondering if anyone has an answer for this. Are the rule sets easily readable in black and white, or should I pay the extra to get it all coloured?

10$ all setup charts, rules etc. Printed in black n white vs 40$ colour.

Figured I’d get the setup charts in colour to match the pieces.
But 60+ pages of instructions seems excessive. There are some coloured sharts showing different alliances in instructions are these an issue?

Don’t have a printer at home so either way I’m paying for every page.

    • RE: Technology Research System, any good ideas?

Small water craft- for marines allows 1 sea zone movement without transport.

Chemical warfare- for rockets/bomber axis had 2 developed nerve gasses short duration effects in ww2

Biological warfare- for rockets/bomber allies had anthrax fully developed long lasting kill zone similar to nuclear.

Large helium airships. Excellent for sub location like aircraft on station but can last longer.

Air drop- allows artillery/armoured cars to drop in with paratroopers.

Armoured coordination training. All vehicle types coordinating in a small group to exploit each type to fullest. Example a combination of light med heavy tanks mobile arty and tank destroyers as a single unit. Would increase attack and defense of all armoured units.  Wouldnt need to change all units but light tank groups would have at least one of each combined within that group.same for rest of armoured units on the board. A more versatile unit than just a stack of one type.

    • RE: Technology Research System, any good ideas?

All wars are high speed tech races. Armor gets better so weapons get better to beat the new armor. 1939 equipment was a death trap by wars end and its killing power was nullified. Tech during the war advanced farther than it did between ww1 and ww2. 1939 equipment was ww1 surplus more often than not.
Example of tanks. Weapons increased in penetration, rate of fire etc. Later models also had protections built in for this new normal, while trying to out gun even its own better armor.
The same was seen on all types. Hand weapons, engines, aircraft, naval everything.

Obviously this may be to complex to incorporate fully. I’ll have to sit down n work on a list.

Thanks for bringing this up tech in 1940 is too random and wasteful to bother with. But really required to capture the essence of the era. No tech no airborne inf. Etc….

    • RE: Technology Research System, any good ideas?

Add up your dice roles untill you reach a breakthrough. 1939 style but still incorporate a bit of a tech tree. Ala 1936. Would suck if opponent flukes out and get a nuke strike round 3.

      1. cheap role cost so anyone can aford it not just major powers.
      2. have a counter on bottom of tech chart like income to show national progress.
3)add each die role to the counter total untill tech is reached.
4)allow player to pick tech (research is usually focused not random)
5)have tech by type work in progression of stages. Eg. Bomber to long range to high altitude to heavy. Prevents directly jumping to an unanswered super unit by one nation.
      3. ensure every tech can be countered by different research trees. Eg high altitude flight thats out of tange of aaa. Is countered by anti air missile. At same level on a different tech.

    • RE: Looking for Breakdown comparison of global war versions

      Thanks Jinx!
Exactly what I was hoping to see.

Mislabeled territories are not that big of a deal. But I’ll hear it every time that area is used. (Label maker will fix this, maybe relabel all of canada so its less noticed)

As for balance that would be a work in progress.
British empire beaks up and Canada with Netherlands occupy london….etc.lots of variety

    • RE: Looking for Breakdown comparison of global war versions

Curious if anyone knows whether the global 1936 map second edition, corrected the names of canadian territories?
I’ve been trying to see on any pics or videos but cant read them.
Prices on these prints are also very competative and with the charts/boards beat anything i can find locally, even with shipping and Canadian exchange rate. Seeing as our group is all Canadian, I’ll be using a label maker to correct this or hear about it every game. Its like labeling Texas as Louisiana. Just brought it up due to the review on hbg site. Obviously prefer not to ruin the face of this map with stickers

Otherwise this map seems to have the starting political and territorial ballance and options I am looking for. Extra nations and a third faction (communists ) along with all the optional extra rules/expansions. This should  prevent the static situational game that I started to find in A&A global 40. Love the game but varriety will keep it fresh. And primarily hopefully keep our group going well into the future.

    • Looking for Breakdown comparison of global war versions

If this has already been discussed I’ll scuttle this topic.

But on a limited budget as in can only afford one version of this at a time. Im trying to find a comparison of the map variations.

1)looking for maximum printed icons on the map. Air bases and other cardboard chits are rediculously messy especially in Europe.
2)wanted a map with maximum number of additional nations that via house rules or game design can either be added or played as a group of nations.
3)various other preprinted icons like rail, convoy etc in the map. This will help to either increase or decrease the complexity of each game to accomidate longer or shorter gametime.
4)a map that sets the stage for a possible free for all/alternate political situation style of play. As in not everything is owned by one nation to represent a snapshot of german maximum expansion but allows for a more equally distributed player startpionts. Alternate reality and national alignment would be easier. As in france is axis and Italy is allies turn 1etc.
Ana1940global is fun but way too scripted to accomidate alternate political realities easily.

    • RE: Global Gaming Table Threads and Pictures

      Thanks cwo mark!

I doubt I’ll ever match any of those finishes though. Some true heirloom pieces cherrywood or tiles all look amazing.
The hero to my table was Dad. His framing knowledge converted a wobbly table to a nice braced table. A 2 day head sratcher  :?  into a 4 hour project with all his tips. Our group has no tradesmen, so the preplanned gaps for future materials and bracing etc are all his. We would have figured it out but this way we only built it once

    • RE: Global Gaming Table Threads and Pictures

Wow. Im out of my league here. Some truly amazing works of art.

We started dreaming of a table after a utube visit to young grasshopper’s channel.

Using boardgamegeek’s (table options forum) website with different table construction options broken down.
We decided on a pedestal 2’8"×6’ with a loose 3/4 sanded pine 4x8 sheet of plywood for a table top. Cross braces extended past plywood on the sides to support, a 2x4 frame on egde like a leaning rail. Plan is to upholster this for padding and add a sheet inside to act as a cover, creating a vault to keep the super weapons (3 cats) off the game. Its 42 inches high, 8feet 3inches long and 4feet 3inches wide. With a 48x96 inch map possible. It’s a walkaround back saver table with barstools.

Currently using 1940 gobal (oob). Lots of room around the map and cover leaves it setup between games.

We added a 1/8th of an inch extra space all around the plywood table top and cover, so it can be removed and be potentially upholstered like a poker table. This also cuts down on weight while moving the table. Pedestal is also removable. Built it on the deck, so it needed to come apart for move to basement anyway. 4 piece separations made it manageable for 2  people to move relatively easy.

To date its a 150$ Canadian, build for everything screws wood, and an extra sheet of plywood for a cover, taxes the works. Using only a pencil, tape measure, framing square, drill and circular saw (store can cut it for you so the saw is optional).

Now we need to Play test for possible issues and must-have add-ons. And figure a good way to support the cover. If we upholster the leaning edge i can hide the staples with a wood/metal strip to keep it up, its currently smaller than the opening.

    • RE: Where are you from? Sign our guestmap!

Map link took me to a map site but not an induvidual map. So I’ll do it this way.

      Edmonton Alberta Canada.
Novice ana player. Was an avid risk player. This site has been a gold mine. Thanks to you all. Our group has benefited from your posts, and AnA fever has taken us. Even built our own 4x8 foot vault top table, to finally finish a game. Lots of rule reading/surprises at our level.
