      @squirecam:

      @questioneer:

      Yes, by round 4 technically.

      I’ve always been of the belief that if games are ending early, either its a particularly bad dice outcome, or the other side is not playing very well.

      Questions:

      What did each of you buy as Germany?

      When you were allies, did he attack you, or vice versa?

      Q1  I bought like 4inf, 4tnk, 1ftr.  He bought something similar

      Q2  Russia went too strong the first round and it backlashed quickly.  The 2nd game seemed more like the normal Eastern Front stuggle- eventual stack on either side but the Allied planes came in to defend and bomb just in the nick of time.  This is why I think Allies have the advantage.  Against a strong KGF, there are just too many fronts for the Axis to defend- the new map with chopped up territories doesn’t allow it.

      I didn’t completley ignore Japan though.  I simply left a small annoying force to sail south and become a potential menace- but I put all my money and builds towards Europe.  Japan is way to slow- you need more builds to get to Russia because it takes forever.  That’s why I think the NOs help balance it out more because they help the Axis more than the Allies on the onset.

      In the first game, he did have some dice whoopings.  The 2nd game seemed pretty normal.  Tech really didn’t effect the games much because the games ended fairly quickly (4 rounds).  They are a lot of fun though and pretty balanced I think because both sides can invest in them- especially with NO’s.

      @Imperious:

      I want a strategic space empire game with 400 plastic warships that look like old BSG 1978 warships and Star Wars ships and are finely detailed and have a rules system thats like AA with each ‘territory’ a different star system that you conquer.

      It would take all these expensive miniatures out of the market because we finally have micro star wars ships and various fighters in .5-2 inch scale, which allows for huge fleets for cheap.

      Heck id would put my own money up for this.

      I hope to God your actually kidding. :|

    • What We Want the Next AA boardgame to be.

      Moderator’s - please move this to whereever.  I’m just trying to get some data from the AAcommunity so that I can talk to the powers that be at AH and get something done about it.

      Voter’s- You may pick your top 2.  Mind you that Larry did say that he was not interested in a AANorth Africa/Mediterrean type game so I did not put it on the list, but there is an “Other” box.  If you choose “other”, than state the game you would like to see in a post.

      Thanks :-)

    • RE: AA50 will be reprinted!!!!

      I talked to my distributor a couple of days ago.  He said rumor has it that WOTC will update and reface all the AA games- Europe/Pacific (combo), Dday, Bulge, Guad and of course Revised- now AA42.  Take what you can from that.

      WOTC/AH doesn’t like petitions on there forums- against regulations, they were nice to accept the AA50 one.  However a bombardment of communication is needed to get the point across.  I’ll try to get a Europe/Pacific interest column started soon and see what happens.  I already started one on Larry’s site so I will make a similar one on the other sites.
      :-)

      It seems like AAEurope/Pacific and AAStalingrad are really in the lead for the wish list for a while now.  I say we push these first and then go from there.  Maybe I will just create a poll- that’s it, I’ll do that first to see what the interest is.

    • RE: Games W/O National Objectives

      Played 2 games with the Smorey FTF rules last night against an experienced player.

      In the 1st game, Russia took all three front territories- Belo, EUkr and Ukr.  However, they really paid for it because Germany came reeling back.  German naval successes really helped though (these G1 navy battles are the diceyest things in the game- win them and you have a chance, lose them and life is difficult for Axis).  Moscow threatened by stack round 3 or 4- game over- forfeit.  Tech- Russia (bad choice)- got increased production- useless by that time, US- long range aircraft- nasty tech, Japan- super subs- it semi-countered US’s LRA.

      1-0 Questioneer

      In the 2nd game, I was Allies.  As Russia, I only went after 2 of the three majors- Ukraine and EUkraine.  I evacuated Karelia with AA to Arc and built all inf.  Moved all Inf west from Siberia.  Japan did its normal damage in the east with an IC in Manchuria and later in Sumatra (E Ind).

      As Allies I went a KGF, with a small navy in the Pacific swooping down to stack Hawaii and then swooping down to Australia just to be a distraction- indirectly worked.  By round 3 I was on Africa and had a good shuck route going there and threatening France also.  With early German naval successes, Axis went full force towards Russia.

      Game came down to a stack battle between Germany and a Russian stack with some Allied planes.  Although the punch count was close- slight Allied advantage, Russia won with 5tnks and allied planes left.  Axis had nothing behind the force to back up except for a few Italian units- game won in 3 rounds by forfeit after that.  No tech was won- only Japan tried it.

      2-0 Questioneer

      I defintely, believe one should take the Allies here and give the bid to the Axis.  By the way- the bid was $4 to the Axis in both games.  I still like playing with National Objectives- it gives Axis a more balanced chance.  Playing with these tourny rules, I think Axis will lose against experienced Allied players most of the time.

      Of course, I will play more practice games with this format.

      AA50 will be reprinted after all!!!

      This is bad news. They should combine A&A Europe with A&A Pacific. Two maps in the same box. Then you could choose to play the European theather, or the Pacific theather, or the global war. Like 3 games in one box. That would be nice.

      I asked Larry this very question to Larry on his site a few weeks ago.  He said that it was a great idea and that he is working on it right now.  I’m thinking its coming on 2010.  Here’s the whole thread- you can read it or file through the whole thing.

      From WolfStart at the AH site who announced the AA50 reprint news to us:

      If you feel there are issues with the game that need to be addressed (especially from a balance/playability standpoint) I’d strongly encourage you to let them know via Customer Service - especially now that we know we have a window of opportunity before a reprint actually gets printed.

      You can contact Customer Service here: http://www.wizards.com/customerservice

      I would just call the number at the site and talk to them- its more effective- I did it already.

      Yes, will the reprint AA50 have the new AA42 sculpts?  What about Italy and China- new scuplts also?  Probably a question for Larry.  I would like to ask him when we can expect the a new AAEurope/Pacific and Stalingrad, Iwo Jima, Midway, WW1 game etc. :-)

      I hope this can be the beginning of more Axis and Allies games coming on a continual basis. (Let’s keep Larry empolyed!)  Its a victory for strategic boardgames all around- which don’t get the attention they deserve even with the great demand for them.

      Let’s wait for the offical word from WOTC before we start celebrating though.  Thanks to everyone though who participated especially Von M and some influencial people at the AH forums.  Let’s not stop here but make a claim for all AA games and historical strategic boardgames by filling out the survey at AH- VERY IMPORTANT- don’t complain- voice your opinion.

    • RE: How many men in your deadzone ?

      @DarthMaximus:

      For me it depends on a lot of factors, how much air do I have, much is the Ter worth, is it a vital Ter to have, etc.

      I’ll usually go 2 inf with air (vs. 1 inf) in most cases.  But if there are 2 defending inf and I have overwhelming air (3-4 planes), I’ll match and go 2 vs. 2.  With less air I may go 3 inf vs. 2, and for things that may not be that important but I’d like to try I’ll match and go 1 inf + planes vs. 1 inf.

      In the case of Russia where planes (either 1 plane or no planes) may be light, I vary anywhere from sending in:
      2 inf, 1 inf + 1 rt, 2 inf + 1 rt, 3 inf
      These would be for the situation when attacking only 1 inf.

      I try to preserve my rt and arm so I use Inf attacks only when possible.  The odds aren’t that much different.
      Win % (attacking 1 inf)
      2 inf = 67%
      1 inf, 1 rt = 87%
      2 inf, 1 rt = 97%
      3 inf = 90%

      So unless it is a ter that I must take to maintain the deadzone and prevent the other side from being able to land planes for added defense if they choose to try and stack, I’ll use inf only attacks when I can.

      Agreed here- air power measurement influences this the most as well as if the territory is coastal.

    • RE: Games W/O National Objectives

      I am playing a game right now using the GenCon and Origins tournament rules established by Greg Smorey for FTF
      Basically it goes like this:

      Yes on Tech
      No on Nat Obj
      Yes on Fighter Escorts
      No on Darnalles option

      Heavy Bombers pick best of the 2 dice and each roll separately

      I’ll let you guys know how it goes

    • RE: Games W/O National Objectives

      @Funcioneta:

      But I think the main complaining is about HBs vs fleets. I still think is not so big issue (there are also some techs here and there that counter it and bombers cannot conquer land and bomb fleets at the same time)

      I prefer HBs picking best of 2 dices and no escort rules. It lets some space for SBRs and it’s not enough strong to make tech complainers have a solid argument against them

      I forgot about that fleet thing… I kept thinking HB was only for SBRs :-o
      Yeah if HB can roll 2 dice in battle- land or sea they will be very overwhelming…so the stated change “roll 2 dice and pick the higher one” is best- I stand corrected. :-)

      However it is important that if you have 2 or more bombers with HB (using the above rule), then you have to roll EACH bomber separately otherwise it messes up the probability.

      Example if I have 3 bmrs with HB and lets say I roll all 6 dice at the same time and I get: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6  One could pick the top three die rolls: 4, 5, 6 = 15 damage.  Versus rolling each bomber separately- example bmr1 gets: 1, 2  bmr2 gets: 3, 4  bmr3 gets 5, 6.  Now taking the highest of these rolls separately yields: 2+4+6= 12 damage!

    • RE: Games W/O National Objectives

      I was thinking about this the other day also.  If you are on an SBR and you take a couple of fighters with you to defend them you are leaving yourself to AA firing at ALL of your aircraft, then you will take another round of fire from the defending interceptors which have double the chances of hitting you (attacking, “escorting” planes at 1 and defending interceptors at 2).

      After 2 rounds of fire at your planes/bombers, I think that if you have Heavy Bombers, you deserve to roll 2 dice instead of “rolling 2 and choosing the highest one”

      That rule was used in the Revised tourney because the HB were too devestating.  But in this game, there is only a 3% of getting HB anyway and with the fact that you have to go through 2 rounds of fire via the AA and intercepors, players who get HB deserve to roll 2 dice!  Don’t you think??? :?

      http://aaswampform.forumandco.com/aa-anniversary-edition-aa50-f18/aa50-tournament-rules-for-origins-gci-t50.htm

      I still don’t 100% agree with him but I do now understand his reasoning.  His approach is to start with the base game and balance that and then move on to scenario choice, adding optional rules and bids etc.  He did say that it will probably be tweeked after the tournys.
