      Preordered 2 P40s for myself- yeah.  :-D Almost got a third but really didn’t want to spend the cash.
      I suggest that everyone buys at least 2 of these games for extra pieces and such.  In AA42 you HAVE to buy two of them because the WOTC cheapos didn’t even put in enough chips for the setup!!!- bafoons!!! :-(

      Playing w/o NOs is a real dry game- personally I hate in.  I think this is what makes the game.  The tech is great also, though you could live w/o it.  If you don’t play with the NOs, you might as well play Revised or AA42 (The Revision of Revised) :wink:

    • RE: Will the Atlantic and Pacific in AA40 Global be balanced

      Yes over time the Allies would dominate production capacity as the war went on.  If the US wasn’t involved the war would be even or maybe a slight advance for Axis.  With the US involved, the only way for the Axis to win was with early key victories- Midway, Barborossa, SeaLion were just some of the major failures the Axis had to win in order for them to secure a quicker decisive victory- actually I think it would have been an armstice at best- but the war would have gone on a lot longer anyway.

      If Germany would’ve succeeded in sacking Moscow, it could have been a longer war or an armstice.  If Japan would have won Midway or Guadalcanal- the war would have lasted longer etc.  I think the game at least introduces these themes along with the tech and NOs.  Remember, espionage, technological reasearch and such played a huge role and further aided the Allies greatly in the war.

      There are many more factors than just the straight “numbers” that go into measuring  % chances of each side winning- I think the game presents those possiblities.  The more I study WW2, the more I am convinced that the Axis could have won if they had made some wiser decisions.  They had the iniative in the beginning and lost it as the US got involved and some of their strategic planning went south.

      AA puts you in the pilot’s seat and allows you to make those some decisions or try to find some better ones- rewrite history- debating aside that what makes the game great.  Military initiative vs. Economic dominance in the longrun. :-)

      @Omega:

      Yes, or else Allies would always win, which would be boring.

      Give the allies some sort of economical advantage. Give the Axis the “priority advantage” (meaning they play first, which is what happened in the war at the beginning) and some sort of military advantage.

      Easier said than done though. But I believe Larry does good game. No need to worry

      Very much agreed.  I think Larry has done a pretty good job here in estimating the productions and military units available in his games and matching that to the historical facts as best as possible.  The info may be helpful however, so I just put it on his website.

      Specifically, in the years 1940, 1941, 1942 (start times for his games), the comparisons from his games to the historical facts seem relatively close.  Of course there are many more factors that could be debated that go beyond what you see in these numbers. :-)

    • RE: 6 IPC Tanks and other unit costs

      @questioneer:

      I don’t know if someone mentioned this but- REMEMBER- in the E40,P40 (G40) games the Battleships and Carriers will take 2 hits- HOWEVER- they have to go back to a naval base to REPAIR- which limits their movement somewhat.  This may make these units “slower” than just buying a couple of crusiers or 3 destroyers.  I thought this was a clever rule to make room for all naval units to have good roles to play.

      V-man, you have a point, you have to realize the other factors involved in this game like the ones mentioned above by myself earlier and the effect of naval and airbases and Major and Minor ICs (can’t be built on Islands except UK, Japan and Australia).

      Can Kreighund give us a price list of all the units yet???  No sense debating if some of the prices are unknown. :?

      At 3-3 the tank probably should be $6 anyway- c’mon the crusier is 3-3???

      Tech bomber at $11- yeah- should probably bump the bomber up $2 bucks to $14 then.

      By the way, is there a confirmation on any of the costs of the units in the E40/P40 games???  Can someone make a list??

      I will buy 3 P40s, 3 E40s and 2 AA50s when the reprint comes out.

      I already have 2 AA50s and 3 AA42s.

      I suggest that you buy at least 2 of every game since reprints take forever and you’ll need the extra pieces and such anyway.

    • RE: Pictures of Pacific 1940 Box Art

      @LuckyDay:

      Product Description on Funagain…

      Axis & Allies celebrates 25 years of strategy war gaming with a deluxe edition of its original theater-level game. Axis & Allies Pacific 1940, designed and developed by Larry Harris, utilizes the updated rules established in A&A Anniversary Edition. Two new combat units debut in this game, Tactical Bombers and Mechanized Infantry. Australia and New Zealand, joined together as the ANZAC forces, represent a new playable ally. China fields more forces than ever before, but will need help from their allies – the United States and England – to withstand the might of expansionist Imperial Japan.
      Axis & Allies Pacific 1940 features an oversized board that measures 35 inches wide by 32 inches high. With over 450 pieces, deluxe game components and local storage boxes, this game raises the standard established by A&A Anniversary Edition. All new rules for neutral nations, naval & air bases, kamikaze attacks and convoy disruption add even more depth and historical accuracy to this giant game.
      Finally, this deluxe theater-level game is designed to join together with Axis & Allies Europe 1940 to create the greatest Axis & Allies experience to date! When joined, these boards will measure 5 feet wide by 32 inches high. Both games have been designed to play alone or together to offer a 2-6 player global 1940 scenario, complete with separate set up and national objectives.

      Is my math wrong or did someone make a mistake???

      Assuming that the AAP40 and AAE40 boards are the same size, 32 inches is definitely the height but the widths are different!!!  Is it 5ft (60 inches) or 70 inches the width of the global game???

    • RE: Will the Atlantic and Pacific in AA40 Global be balanced

      If the setup is like the 41 version of AA50 then yes I think it will be balanced.

      Something that I noticed about that version- after playing both versions several times- was that unlike the 42 version of AA50, the 41 left a more “open” game and more possiblities.  Both sides still have there advantages, but in the 41 it is more extreme- the Allies start with more cash and land but much less units, the Axis start with less cash but a LOT more attacking units in the beginning.

      Since the global game will start in 1940, I expect that the setup will be somewhat similar to the 41 in AA50 where the game is more “open”.  The 42 is a more restrictive, predictable and a more “closed” game because the variables are few and the constants are set in stone more in regards to position, income and units attained.

    • RE: Is the promised Reprint of AA50 actually AAP40 and AAE40???

      @questioneer:

      Hey guys,

      Just contacted WOTC by phone and by email trying to get an update to this question of a confirmation date.  I had a good conversation on the phone with the rep but unfortunately he could not answer (or at least wasn’t at liberty to say) when a confirmation date for the reprint was.  He would not deny or confirm anything- whether a reprint was on the way and/or if AAP40 and AAE40 was a limited edition.

      Still waiting for the e-mail response.  I kindly voice my opinion along with others about the lack of attention at the AH website and how it never was this way before (like back when Revised came out in 2004).  I thanked him for his time anyway and the conversation closed well.

      However- no answers though.  Larry has acknowledged our desire for a reprint of AA50 with a foldable board and refreshed sculpts like in AA42 (put these requests in the e-mail too).  So I know he knows.  Maybe he can pull some strings???

      Guess we just gotta wait…  :-(

      Knowing the Senior VCL at AH/WotC who announced the “official word” for the reprint, I have every reason to believe that he is telling the truth.  If you read his posts, he seems very cooperative.

      Here’s to hoping.
      :-)

      Got the e-mail response…

      My question by e-mail:

      "Hi, just wondering if their is a confirmed date for the AA50 Reprint. Several of the petitions I created for it have been continuing to grow sharply since the announcement of the future releases of “Axis and Allies Pacific 1940” and “Axis and Allies Europe 1940”.

      A reprint was promised by WOTC management on June 17th, 2009 via an official word via the AH forums.

      When the reprint occurs, voters are asking for:

      Refreshed sculpts like the ones in the recent AA1942 game (very nice)
      and a Foldable game board along with updated rulebook that includes the FAQs and Errata.

      Can we get some kind of confirmation date or estimation on when a reprint may happen???

      Thank you for your time and patience"

      The response:

      "At this time, all that’s been told to customer service is that we intend to do a reprint, but we do not have any further information beyond that at this time. I’ll gladly pass along your request for more information, however.

      Thanks, and Good Gaming!

      Saturday-Sunday 10am-4pm PST / 1pm-7pm EST"

      So by this, I guess it is a done deal as far as the reprint, but a date has not been confirmed yet.  I’m gonna take a guess that the reprint of AA50 with refreshed sculpts, updated rules and foldable board will be Fall of 2010- after the AAP40 and AAE40 have come out.

    • Is the promised Reprint of AA50 actually AAP40 and AAE40???

      A couple of months ago, a senior Volunteer Forum Leader who has some direct contact from WOTC stated that WOTC has offically promised a reprint of AA50.  A date was never confirmed and we are currently working to get them to confirm a date for us.

      However, in the back of my mind, I am wondering if AAP40 and AAE40 games (which include the grand global game) ARE their answer for the AA50 game reprint.  I truly don’t believe this, but then again this is WOTC!!!  It would be sad if it was since I like AA50 also. :-(

      What do you think??? :?

      I’m sure everyone will get a copy of Pacific 1940 if they order it as soon as it comes out…
      and if not, I’ll rip the heads off people who buy multiple copies.

      Hopefully amazon.ca or boardgames.ca will have it… with minimal shipping (amazon may even give the free shipping).

      Rip my head baby, rip it off cause I’m preordering 4 copies to rip people off this time next year!!!

    • RE: Pacific 1940 - Limited Edition or not?

      @Brain:

      If this one is a  limited edition, then there will be an even bigger demand for it when Europe comes out as new players will want to play the global game. I say buy two now and when the price goes up you can sell it and get your European version with the profit from your extra Pacific game. It’s a no-brainer. Oh wait a minute this kind of sounds like all those lenders who sold houses to people who couldn’t afford them under the guise that they would be able to sell them for a profit when they could no longer make the payments because there was no way that those over-inflated prices were ever going to come down. Oh no that would never happen.

      Exactly…I got 2 copies of the AA50 game… I wish I would have gotten 2 more but that’s OK.  This time I will buy 3-4 copies of AAP40 and AAE40.  I will keep 2 copies for myself and sell the other 1-2 copies on Ebay.  I am going to wait until this time next year to sell them though when the demand for both games (with the global game option) skyrockets.  Can’t wait to rip some people off!

      Its hard enough getting a confirmation date for the reprint of AA50, I would believe it would be twice as difficult to get these games on reprint once they sell out also.  At any rate, IF YOU DON’T GET AT LEAST 2 COPIES OF THESE GAMES, YOU WILL BE SORRY- enough said.
