    • RE: Italy a bad design

I just want to point out that even if Italy loses its initial fleet there is way to build it up again. Build an airbase on Sicily and you have a CV with unlimited capacity in SZ 95, using the scramble ability, and Italy can build up in good order. After an initial exchange where Germany retaliates in the Med I dont think it would take more than the 2 Italian and maybee 2 German Ftrs to make a strike against a small Italian fleet in SZ 95 a bad deal for Allies.

As an Italian player that lost the SC 95 on I1 I would save my 10 starting IPC and let Germany clear SC 95 on G2. If the French fleet is still around i has to be destroyed as well. By then there is not much of an allied naval presence left and the Italian SZ 97 can transport 2 inf to Sicily where you place your air base with 2 ftrs. Remaining IPC can be put into a sub, destroyer or transport as needed.

Germany can help out with additional ftrs as needed. Granted that this is a opportunity cost for Germany but it keeps the Med and African theater open and forces the allies to keep defences in the area.

      Cheers

Copenhagen Denmark for me. Great to have your own area on the board finally. Looking forward to invade Sweden in 1940 Global as a matter of principle now that I am allowed to do it.  :-D

    • RE: How useful are cruisers??

I would like to point out that the value of cruisers is tied to value of invasions and in particular the threat of invasion. The Allies can tie down a significant number of Axis units in Europe with an invasion fleet in SZ 7 or SZ 12. Trs need protection off course or the enemy will destroy them with air and here the cruiser has a fine role of both providing defense and being able to contribute to the land campaign.

I agree that you should anchor an Allied invasion fleet around a UK CV using startup Ftr´s, maybee even 2 CV´s. I prefer to keep the fleet UK only to max mobility and firepower on the invasion. You need 1 destroyer to handle subs initially but from then on I would spend my money on cruisers. Allthough it would be prudent to buy more destoyers to soak up hits if the enemy invests heavily in air units.

By the way i voted the cruiser to be usefull and consider infantry the only unit to be very usefull.

      Cheers

    • RE: The Official "Looking for AA50 Opponents" Thread

      Hi all.

I would like to play a game of AA50-41 scenario with me as the allies. I prefer techs and especially no´s but that is not a dealbreaker for me. Im new to play-by-forum so a little help in that regard would be nice.

      Cheers

    • RE: Strategic bombing in AA50

      Okay then.

At least I got some more info on game mechanics. Turns out i misunderstood the cost per IC point thing. I was sure it cost 2 IPC per point. Could be nice to tweak the mechanics to avoid the single HB to flatten a IC. I think 1 possible hit pr. bomber and 2 for the HB at a cost of 3 IPC per IC point with simultaneous AA fire and bombing seems fair.

      Just my 2 IPC

      Cheers

    • Strategic bombing in AA50

Hi all. Long time lurker awakens.

In the tech discussion thread about HB it seems that they are overpowered.

That’s true if HB is 2 D6 worth of IPC damage resulting in 6 damage points on the IC in the extreme case. That discussion made me wonder if we knew everything about strategic bombing in AA50 there is to know.

I don’t think that we should assume that strategic bombing works the old way anymore. I have no source but it makes much more sense to me if the bomber has to roll for a hit – in line with the mechanics of the rest of the game. A roll of 1-4 the IC looses 1 production capacity, 5-6 the bomber misses. In that case the average cost of a bombing raid in IPC terms is 4/3 IPC.

Not much when you likely to lose 2 IPC per raid to AA fire. The real benefit of a strategic bombing campaign in this situation is the disruption of the enemy production.

Bombing in this manner can be an interesting strategy. Consider a western allied bombing strategy. In the start it allows the US to get quickly into the action against Germany. With a sustained effort from the US an UK, Germany may have trouble fielding as many units as she wishes. Forcing her to cut down on infantry and putting more expensive units in the line while keeping up with IC repairs or building a new IC - choosing between a low IPC area and a location far away from the action in Western Europe. Italy would be easier to hurt this way I might add.

Strategic bombing is also a viable strategy against that far away IC in India or French-Indo China. You can shut that IC down, but it will probably cost you. Fairly balanced in my opinion.

If you consider the techs radar and HB cancel each other out.

      Cheers
