      The chips are a good idea! If chips are removed when hit, can they be built back up in a later turn? (At a cost, of course!)

      I think an attack against ships is pretty powerful - probably more so than paratroopers for the allies. But then again, may not matter much against a 2 hit BB…

      Yeah, agreed - hopefully his new gig’s in a similar line of work.

      Back to sealion. I think a G1 sealion is a nice parlor trick, but be careful not to lose to many of those fighters - you may regret it later. However, I’ve been the allies in a game with a 3 transport buy for the baltic on G1. It definitely makes the UK player start the game pretty defensively.

      @goldenbearflyer:

      I tried running G1 SeaLion on a simulator, but I don’t think the simulator works very well for this, because in order to TAKE UK Germany must save 1inf, so after 1inf lost then ftrs take the hits.Â

      If you haven’t already, try the sim over at http://frood.net/aacalc/ . It has the option of re-calc’ing based on leaving a land unit to take the territory. Plus it’s a great sim anyway.

      Never tried it. What kind of advantage do the blockhouses give? (not too familiar with the DDay game)

      Nice idea for Japan’s islands…

      @goldenbearflyer:

      It can land in Bury. E Can-W Can-sz63-sz62-sz60-Bury.

      Wow, I totally missed the small connection between WCan and SZ63 at the top of the map.Â

      Yeah - I missed this once too. Unfortunately, my opponent showed it to me with 8 INF, 8 ARM in western Canada. Remember to keep a few good defending US units in west US. It’s a pretty embarrassing way to lose.

    • RE: German strategy for building AC

      In line with the AC “strat”: If you’re afraid of the large stack in west Russsia/Caucasus against Ukraine, pull all of the forces there (except one INF) back to Eastern Europe. I think Nix’s posting more or less shows this. The logic: as Germany (or the Axis in general) IMHO you’re FAR better off marshalling your forces and chosing where to attack rather than risking your good offensive units on defense.

      If you’re lucky, the aircraft carrier/west europe FIG stack (3 is good R1) buys you a round or two against an allied invasion of Europe. Use the time to build a solid stack of units in Eastern Europe to exploit any mistake the Russians make and to make very small scale INF attacks. If the Russians split their forces between WRU and CAU, they’re in trouble. Though lots of pressure is good, make sure not to over extend and lose too many units or you’ll be in serious trouble when US/UK begin their invasion.

      I’ve had success with this sort of offensive defense with Germany, but keep in mind it’s worthless without an aggressive Japan.

    • RE: The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World

      @Imperious:

      post 1865 list:

      1.Stalingrad–- obvious conclusions. Nothing is bigger than this battle for deciding the wars conclusion.
      2.Marne ( first one)— failure to win would have been a quick german victory in 1914 and not have caused ww2
      3. Dunkirk— if the brits failed to leave intact Hitler would have immediatly invaded and captured England and ended the war.
      4.Midway— The japanese would have lost one way or another but it ended the string of victorys up until then.
      5.Verdun— this meat grinder was supposed to totally sap the french of soldiers to fight… but it also sapped the strength of the germans buying the allies enough time to bring in the americans.
      6.Tannenburg— total reversal of the eastern front leading to collapse of imperial russia and cold war and many other things
      7.Inchon— created the present day situation with N Korea

      Sedan in May 1940 - more important for the lack of any major fighting since the German crossing of the Meusse river nearly unopposed by large numbers of German tanks sealed the fate of the French army.

    • RE: The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World

      @Nukchebi0:

      Top Five:

      1. Stalingrad (changed the tide of the European land war)

      2. Midway (did the same for the Pacific)

      3. The Marne (already mentioned)

      4. The Somme (first battle with tanks)

      5. The 1980’s arms buildup (a Cold War battle which ended Russia dominance)

      I would actually list the Somme as one of the most indecisive battles of the world. Though it was the first use of tanks, the few that made it to the battle without breaking down had no effect on the battle’s already pointless outcome. Cambrai on the other hand, was the first effective use of tanks expolited by infantry breakthrough.

      I can’t think of much to add to the original 15, but I suppose if you’re Canadian, you’re probably thankful that Benedict Arnold got stomped in his horribly bad invasion of Quebec at the start of the revolution.

      Can you say “Northern United States”?

      Probably not belonging on the same list, but important nonetheless: the Japanese defeat of the Russians at Port Aurthur and again at Tushima in 1904-5. It not only began the political destabilization of the Russian empire but also showed the world that it didn’t take a European power to be beat a European power.

    • RE: The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World

      For going beyond 1851, I would have to add Metz & Sedan in 1870 to the list. The Prussian victory united Germany, making them the most powerful nation of Europe. I guess we all know the eventual consequences.

      Also, the Marne in 1914. The stop of the advancing German army that began the 4 year stalemate that eventually undid the German dominance of Europe.

    • RE: Saburo Sakai's AAPacific Essays - #11 - 4 VP J1 Opening

      Really well done. I even set up the board so I could get a clearer picture of what you were describing. There were quite a few things I missed in additional rules/nuances during my first (and last) play of this game years ago. I’m looking forward to playing again with a better understanding of the dynamics. Thanks again.

      Saburo - Thanks for these articles. They’ve inspired me to blow the dust off of my AAP box and have another look at the contents.

    • RE: Watertown, NY A&A board game

      FTF = face to face.

      Yes, we do play “live” occassionally, but it’s been a few months since we’ve even been able to play a 2 player face to face game.

      The e-mail version we play we run through software called TripleA. It’s a nice graphical map that captures turns, handles dice, etc for e-mail games. Very slick. Somewhere on this site is a link to the TripleA website - I think it’s in the games board titled (I think) PBEM FAQ (PBEM = play by e-mail). I can look it up for you later on today if you can’t find it.

    • RE: Watertown, NY A&A board game

      Hi losttribe - I’m in the Rochester area. We have a small group of people that play here, but are finding it harder and harder to play FTF because of schedules, wives, kids, etc. We do play semi-frequent play by email games if there’s any interest in your area & there’s lots of info on this site to get started.

    • BOTB Play by Forum?

      Has anyone come up with a way to play Battle of the Bulge here by forum? With the ability to “roll” 12 sided dice on the site dicey, probably just need a common hex numbering system? (of course, having never actually played, I’m only guessing)

    • RE: POLL:favorite player

      This has long been my theory - I think the UK with 30+ IPC’s can be the most useful/flexible (& most fun) of the allied players. <30 IPC’s and they’re a liability.
