Tanksposted in Axis & Allies 1914
Is there even an upside to buying tanks? I couldn’t find one in the rule book. I’d much rather take 2 infantry or a fighter than a tank. I was wondering if maybe I missed something in the rule book. Any help would be much appreciated.

RE: German Norwegian Lossesposted in World War II History
one heavy cruiser. could be used to help with the Bismarck operation, or with the interception of the Russian convoy. or assist the Scharnhorst. or it could do nothing and the British could fret about it and waste considerable effort and material trying to knock it out or sink it

im out of my realm here. i dont know enough about either of the tanks upgraded guns to make a choice. although i feel like the t34 has a better shot

RE: Bismarck vs Missouriposted in World War II History
sorry if it seemed if i was calling you out. i was just curious to see what you knew about German surface operations. i love talking about this kinda stuff. but i stand by what i said. i don’t think the German crew gets the advantage
depending on how much damage they sustained, i think the Germans might have tried to sail to France instead of Norway. at that point, they felt like they just defeated the best the royal navy had to offer, their “best”/most prized ship, and one of their newest battleships.

Lutjens made several critical mistakes when he was commanding the Bismarck. And I’m what ways were the crew of the Bismarck better than the Missouri

RE: StuG III F vs T34/76 Modell '42posted in World War II History
It’s a close one. Stug has the range and is a smaller target with a better gun. T34 has maneuverability and isn’t limited by a fixed gun. But Stug edges it out with its more powerful gun

RE: Bismarck vs Missouriposted in World War II History
why do you give the crew advantage to the Bismarck?
Missouri can deliver heavier projectiles and more of them. her secondary 5" gun armament can get off 150 rpm. that alone is based off averages from around the US fleet. Missouri is faster, has better armor and maneuverability. her crew is much more experience due to them serving for a longer period of time compared to the Bismarck’s. the Missouri was fighting the Japanese, who IMO, are a much tougher fight than the British (no offense to all of the British player/members on here). US fire control is so much better than the German equivalent. so i feel like the Bismarck would try and put up a fight, but it would be comparatively one sided towards the USS Missouri.

agreed. the reds would win on land, the allies in the air…

RE: Chicago vs Graf Speeposted in World War II History
i like the first three us cruisers designed and build as treaty cruisers, the Pensacola class, the Northampton class, and the Portland class. these to me are beautiful ships, and represent the “best of the heavy cruisers”. they were treaty cruisers and fulfilled their roles beautifully. They packed a punch with 9-10 8"guns, 8 duel purpose 5" guns, and by 1944/5 they had a deadly AA gun compliment. plus the 5"/38 is considered to be the best duel purpose naval gun of the entire war. Their main battery was superb and they helped hold the line in the months after pearl. they were present from coal sea to the Doolittle raid. from midway to Guadalcanal. they were always there, both of the Pensacola class survived the war, the Indianapolis suffered a tragic loss in the closing months and the Northampton class lost half of their numbers. But IMO, they were the best…

RE: Chicago vs Graf Speeposted in World War II History
i dont think it would fair well. most cruisers could push 32+ knots, which was 3.5 knots faster than the Graf Spee. also her armor wasnt all that thick and most likely could be devastated by the barrage of incoming 8" shells. or 12" if we count the Alaska Class as crusiers, not battlecruisers. BTW Worsham, what do you consider to be the “best of the heavy cruisers”?

RE: Chicago vs Graf Speeposted in World War II History
if its the 1931 Chicago, then as marc described it, its really a coin toss. its so close. But if it is the Baltimore class Chicago, then she wins hands down. better fire control and armor/armament.

I own the star trek version. Its the same except the roads pieces are Constitution class starships and the robber is a klingon bird of prey. its fun and its the same as the regular game but a bit nerdier

RE: Warspite vs Vittorio Venetoposted in World War II History
I think the superior British gunnery and more experienced crew gives the warspite the advantage

RE: Baltimore vs Hipperposted in World War II History
I believe the hoppers sister Prinz Eugene was damaged by a torpedo from a British sub, resulting in the need for a completely new stern. Don’t quote me on this tho… All from memory right now,

RE: Baltimore vs Hipperposted in World War II History
Baltimore. Better fire control, and radar. Plus US crews were more experienced and had better damage control. Plus Baltimore class cruisers had a slightly heavier broadside and were 1 knot faster with a better overall armor protection scheme

RE: Warspite vs Vittorio Venetoposted in World War II History
Warspite. only due to radar. otherwise both ships are pretty much the same in terms of armament and such.

oh man. where to start…
USS Enterprise: Yorktown Class Aircraft Carrier. She was the most renown and most decorated ship of WWII. She was constantly thought by the Japanese to be sunk and was always a thorn in their side. She fought the Japanese navy single handed at one point in the Pacific War. Iowa/Montana are close seconds
HMS Illustrious was a fine carrier for the British and helped save Malta a few times if I remember correctly. Plus shes a beauty to look at.
t-34…what can i say? it won the war for the USSR
Magiont line? i mean it was formidable but essentially useless when war broke out in Europe, the Germans just went around it.
7th infantry for the Aussies. Total Badasses
Japanese nighttime naval tactics and pioneering of naval air power/usage of carriers was probably one of the most significant things of the war. the US learned quite a bit by studying their tactics.
German blitzkrieg tactics and armored warfare doctrine was also very feared and renown at the same time by the allies. again, studied greatly by the allies.
Italian Battleship Vittorio Veneto was Italy’s Iowa in a way. it was their prettiest ship, it was their best ship, and most advanced ship. it also was let down by the Italian high command. they didn’t want to hurt their beautiful ships so they rarely sailed, even though they could have seriously harassed the British.

Wittman. The 10th SS was actually surrounded in the Battle of Halbe, which was south-east of Berlin. The battle was actually considered part of the Battle of Berlin
