Just wanted to spur another discussion. What do you guys think is a better sea defense strategy? Lots of cheap units (subs and destroyers), expensive defense (battleships and carriers), or a balance (cruisers supported by a few destroyers and battleships).

Victory for the Alliesposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
Well my friends and I finally had a win for the allies today. In a nutshell, here’s what happened:
Japan went all out for China and DEI, attacked on turn 2 taking the Philippines, Borneo, and 3 chineese territories. Then began to go straight for India but also eventually taking China out completely, Sumatra and Celebes. They had two minor IC’s in China by turn 5.
US took Iwo Jima, built an airbase there and landed aircraft every turn in order to harrass the Japaneese defenses. Then began building fleets and transports and attacked SZ 6 every other turn. Also in the early game, they sent aircraft to Australia after Japan declared war and slowly killed the Japaneese fleet in the south Pacific.
UK built nothing but infantry in order to defend cheaply and enforce China and the ocassional sub todisrupt Japaneese convoys.
ANZAC built mostly fighters and subs in order to harrass any Japanesse navy in the south and later to disrupt Japaneese convoys in the DEI.
Basically the outcome was Japan was a turn or two from taking India (UK was making 8 IPCs per turn) but the US finally amassed a fleet large enough to take out the Japaneese fleet and air defenses in order to land units on Japan. This attack was supported by aircraft on Iwo Jima. After the second landing, Japan was left with no transports and lost. In my opinion, the Japaneese player did not play poorly, but the key was the allies coordianated for a common goal. After seeing this, I personally believe that the game is not broken if played by skilled players. We did however use the errata for the rules. Using the original rules we never got a win for the allies.
Any comments?

Just for the sake of conversation and debate, what objectives, purchases, and moves do you use for Japan on J1?

Errata Questionposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
I recently emailed WOTC about getting a correct battle strip and also asked them if they were planning to update the rules at all. This was their response:
“We place great value in the feedback, ideas, and suggestions of our customers. I assure you that Game Support meets with teams around the company on a regular basis, and we make it a priority that your voice is heard. While we cannot guarantee a direct response, we can promise that your thoughts and concerns are being passed along to the right people.
In the mean time, the correct information is the provided in both the rule-book and the game board itself.”Based on this response, and since I’m new to this website, I have to ask is errata posted by Krieghund just the opinion of a member of this site or is it an official change in works by WOTC? Again, I’m not trying to challenge anyone, I’m just an ignorant newcomer.

Alternate Gameplayposted in Axis & Allies Spring 1942 Edition
After a couple of games of AA42, my friends and I wanted to change things up a bit. We came up with the idea of having Germany & US vs UK, Soviet Union and Japan. We haven’t tried it yet but we think it might work. We also had the idea of have an “every man for himself” match where no one has allies. If anyone has input or suggestions, feel free.

ANZAC Questionposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
In our first time playing AAP40, the player playing as the ANZAC felt somewhat left out and under powered. Kind of like playing Italy in AA50. Japan totally ingnored them and went straight for China and the UK. They resorted to buying only fighters to support allied defenses. If they tried to build anything resembling a navy, Japan would squash it with aircraft. Subsequent games had similar outcomes. We didn’t want to make them a second power controlled by one of the other allied players because that would decrease the player limit. Suprisingly, we usually have more players than countries. Does anyone have any advise for the ANZAC player of our next game?

Dutch Territory Questionposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
After playing this new version a few times, my friends and I have come to the conclusion that the Dutch East Indies are critical to GB’s survival. However, on Japan’s first turn they can move their fleet surrounding the Caroline Islands to block any british transports landing troops on Java and Celebes. Then on their next turn, destroy the British Navy, take Java, Kwantung, and Malaya thus crippling GB. The question then came up that if Japan and GB are not at war, can british transports pass through sea zones containing Japaneese war ships without declaring war? We could not find any definitive answer in the rule book. It does say that transports cannot load or unload in hostile sea zones but are these sea zones considered “hostile” since they are not at war yet? Any help?
