Was there a balance problem with Alpha 2 Or are we just making Alpha 3 to confuse people? Alpha 2 seemed great to me.

Why Alpha 3

RE: Syria Push
I just looked at the Alpha 3 set up charts. That makes my whole strategy irrelevant.

RE: Syria Push
Hello Spendo02, 2 FTR, 1 Tac bomber, 1 carrier, 1 cruiser and 1 destroyer have only a 13% chance of victory against the 2 destroyers, 1 cruiser, 1 sub and 3 fighters (scrambled) in SZ 95. My set up charts are for Alpha 2, so i am unaware of a Italian fleet in SZ 96. That must be in Alpha 3.

Syria Push
This is a strategy i came up with to use in combination with a Romanian factory and Black Sea transports for Germany. It assumes that Germany takes Greece and builds a 2nd air base (along with the Romania one) to protect its Black Sea transports. This will help cover your Italian fleet, which will be in SZ 99 almost every turn. It also assumes that all three Italian transports survive until Italy’s first turn, which mine almost always do as i kill the UK cruiser in 91 and fly 2 fighters to S-Italy with Germany.
I1: Buy 2 INF, 1 ART
Attack S-France, Tunisia and land 4 INF and 2 Tanks in Syria.
I2: Buy 4 INF, 1 tank
Take Iraq, attack Trans-Jordan (lightly, just enough to cut the Suez) and Algeria. Land 5 INF, 1 ART in Syria
I3: Buy as many INF/Tanks as money allows
Take Persia, NW Persia, Morocco, and recapture Trans-Jordan if it was retaken. Land 5 INF, 1 Tank in Syria. Get get all forces in the Middle East ready to push into Trans-Jordan in force on I4.
I4: Buy Inf/tanks
Take Eastern Persia and Attack Trans-Jordan with your stack in Syria/Iraq, which should be numbering 20+ at this point. Move fleet into SZ 97 so it can land 6 additional troops in Egypt on I5.
I5: Buy depends on level of threat USA is putting into med.
Attack Egypt with the 20 units in Trans-Jordan and 6 additional troops landing from Italy. With the Persian oil money and the Egypt national objective, you should be making roughly 33 IPC a turn at this point.Strengths: 1. Early access to Pro-Axis Iraq/Persian Oil money 2. Italians build up a large army that is protected from destruction by the Allies. 3. Italian Navy remains protected in SZ 99 by German fighters, which are also covering German transports in SZ 100. 4. UK should be unable to stop a 26 unit push into Egypt on turn 5.
Weaknesses: 1. Naval domination of Med will be extremely difficult. 2. Turn 5 is a little slow to be getting into Egypt. 3. If UK brings additional fleet to the Med from India and Atlantic, this could threaten your transport stream into Syria.
It certainly isn’t a perfect strategy, but i think it has some potential. Your thoughts?

RE: What do the Allies do now?
I would go lite navy in the pacific (about 20% of my IPCs) and go heavy into Europe. I would continue stacking troops, planes and navy in SZ 91 and Gibraltar where i can simultaneously threaten UK, Normandy, Norway, Africa and Southern Italy. From here i would either liberate UK or take out Italy, whichever option appeared most viable. I would stay back with Russia and build stacks of ground units every turn. When Germany does invade, i counter attack him at the first good opportunity and try to push hard on Germany.

RE: Odd strategy to quickly subdue the Russians as Germany
I like the creativity here, but i don’t think it is a great strategy. To counter this with Russia, i would stack a shit load of guys in Rostov and retake Ukraine and Cauc every turn. It’s just to high of an investment to be worth it IMO.

RE: Japan
Correct me if i am wrong ( i have only played 2 global games), but wouldn’t attacking USA on J1 be a death sentence for Germany and Italy in Europe? Not to mention you lose the 10 IPC bonus for not going to war?
-
RE: Japan
I can get 6 victory cities without India, NP. 2 in China, Manila, Tokyo, Sydney and Hawaii. Doesn’t seem that hard to me, if i can defeat the US fleet. It actually seems far easier than Germany/Italy getting 8.
-
RE: D-Day - Had Rommel had the Panzers at the beaches would it of made a difference?
It would have made little difference. Germany was defeated when 6th army surrendered at Stalingrad IMO. Germany’s only hope (after America entered the war) was to knock Russia out in a timely fashion. One super-power cannot easily defeat 3 super-powers.

Japan
The next game i am playing with my buddies i will be playing Japan and i wanted to run a strategy by some more experienced players. I want to Attack USA on J3 and take Hawaii and the Philippines on J3. I want to apply major pressure on the US fleet early. My planned purchases will be:
J1: 1 Carrier, 1 Transport, 1 inf (26 ipc)
J2: 2 Carriers, 1 transport (39 IPC)This will give me 26 units to hit and defend the Hawaii SZ on turn 3. I will have a smaller fleet that will take the Philippines and pick off the high IPC island in Indonesia the following turns. My thinking is the USA is the only power able to challenge Japanese naval supremacy and i i can clean up the other Allied powers after i have crippled USA.

RE: Russia's Eastern troops
Just wanted to let you guys know what happened. We played all day and played two games. Game 1 i moved all 18 troops towards Germany but they were not needed. The axis conceded round 4 after Britain trashed Italy in the med and Germany built a dummy sea-lion fleet (3 transports), but UK built mostly air power. Germany decided to launch Sea-lion and failed, losing their air force in the process.
Game 2 (I was Germany): My Russian opponent violated the non-aggression pack and created serious problems for my Japanese ally, who was kicked off the coast by round 5 (Burma road was open every turn). I skipped Yugoslavia and launched Barbarossa on G2 putting major pressure on Russia. I was prepared to hit Moscow on turn 5 with 40+ units when Russia launched a devastating counter attack on my forces in Brynsk. The game looked very grim for the Axis at this point. However, we called the game a draw after I pulled all 12 of my planes back to West-Germany, bought 6 transports and clobbered UK. Japan was in dire straights and Russia was in great shape, but with UK out and Germany and Italy making a combined 90+ IPCs. the Allies offered a draw.
I learned two lessons: G3 Barbarossa is safer than G2; And pushing Straight for Moscow is rather risky. I felt if i pushed the Ukraine and Stalingrad complexes i would have fared better than pushing directly towards Moscow.

RE: Russia's Eastern troops
Thanks guys, this helps. So does Mongolia go pro-Allies if Japan attacks Russia?
-
Russia's Eastern troops
I will be playing my first global 1940 game tomorrow and i will be playing Russia. I was wondering what i should do with the troops in the far east. I came up with 3 general options.
1. Evacuate all 18 troops to stop Germany’s invasion
2. Evacuate 12 troops and leave 6 behind with the AA gun in case Japan attacks
3. Violate the non-aggression pact and push into Korea and Northern China with all 18 troops.I am wondering what people with some experience think of these three plans. Which option has generally worked out the best for people?

Minor IC
Just a quick question. I know major ICs downgrade to minor ICs once captured. Do minor ICs get removed from the board if they get captured? Thanks.

RE: UK attack on SZ 97 (Toronto)
@Grasshopper: Won’t Italy just scramble their planes and crush your SZ 96 attack?
-
RE: UK attack on SZ 97 (Toronto)
@Stalingrad: My Alpha 2 chart doesn’t show a bomber starting in United Kingdom. Is that part of the Alpha 3 set up?
-
RE: UK attack on SZ 97 (Toronto)
Thanks, that was actually very helpful. Have you ever considered hitting both Tobruk and SZ 95 on UK1?
-
UK attack on SZ 97 (Toronto)
With scrambling rules can UK still attack SZ 97 on UK1? If Italy scrambles there planes i have it as a 57% win for Italy. If Germany flies 1 fighter to scramble from Norther Italy, this move the chance to 92% victory of Italy. What do people do with UK in the med now?

RE: USA all air buys?
I am ranked adv. in A&A revised online and i have an allied strategy that crushes people that involves USA buying mostly air units. Stack 10 Russian INF in Byrutia and fly USA planes there. It is one movement from W-USA to Byrutia if you fly through W-Canada. you will quite easily get a stack of planes ranging from 8-15 planes there. Bring you entire starting fleet to the Pac and begin transporting guys from W-canada to Byrutia. If Japan brings its fleet up to stop this, merely crush it with your fleet/10+ planes. If they do not bring there fleet up you have a threat of roughly 20 units that can invade Japan, or push into Manchuria. I have worked this against some of the best players in the world. It doesn’t always work of course, but i find it highly effective.
P.S. If you do this Britain’s focus needs to be on containing Germany’s push into Russia. Africa is a sacrifice you will have to make when using this strategy.

RE: Allies winning?
I play Revised a lot online and am 90-25 against int/adv/expert competition. I bid 8G to open and 6G if they go to 7G. If you are playing the game straight up, the Allies will always have the advantage. And, do not place the bid in W-Russia as someone suggested. They would be crushed. Place your bid in Ukraine of Libya for best use.
