    • RE: Are Allies doomed from the outset on G40 map?

      How about giving the Soviets a couple extra tanks, one in Belarus and another in Archangel, giving China their own tank, using WWI1914 UK pieces (or US pieces if you are cheap), this way the weakest of the two relevant (sorry France) allies are boosted somewhat without straining too much on poor Italy (no more extra allied units in Africa), and still allowing Japan and Germany the opportunity to win.

      The Soviets had plenty of tanks in the war, I feel like it’s Tank Army is under represented, and China did use Soviet and British tanks of the past to fight off Japan, not many, but still.

    • RE: Argo's Strategic Map

      @Black_Elk:

      That’s a clean map Ryuzaki_Lawlie!

      The color selection is ideal. Though the black impassibles still jump out at me

      From a design standpoint the only things that catch my eye are the two round sea zones surrounding Japan and Hawaii.

      It feel like you need one in the Atlantic to balance things out aesthetically. Have you considered the possibility of one surrounding the British Isles?

      Or maybe Iceland? Or maybe both?

      I still think Mercator is a bit tight in Europe, a little stretching there might be ideal, even if it was just along the vertical axis. I think the map would still read fine, but you’d get a few more pixel for units into those key European spots. Also if you were willing to shrink South America slightly you could almost curve off a 10th of the map height at the bottom of the screen (which is notorious for players forgetting units in the south sea hehe) without really needing to change Africa/Australia of the pacific. Basically a slight bend would go a long way, even if using Mercator for the baseline.

      Oh and I think the possession colors for Dutch Borneo and British Sarawak and North Borneo should be reversed.

      My only suggestions :)

      Nice work man. That would be a fun map to form the basis of a 1939 game, or any year from 39 on.

      I like that you have not yet imposed on the map any extraneous information such as IPC values or VC. This means the map is adaptive for many purposes. I like the general division of territories. Only that the projection is a bit large at the poles for my tastes. If we could shrink them up slightly I think the map would be ideal. Its really more about screen dimension for me when it comes to the Big World Map that Wandering Head made. These days most screens are very long relative to their height, so standard Mercator always seems blown out a bit in tripleA to me, especially at the south end, and of course Europe is always tight. I wish the center picker for tripleA was better at housing units to smaller scales. Its a little better than it used to be, especially with the guiding lines, but still Europe loves to clutter up haha.
      :-D

      Again though, great design direction!

      I’ll probably shift the continents (turning their general direction), and stretch out northern Africa and Europe, will probably require North America to get a bit skinny, but I think the big benefit from this, is that potentially more European spaces can be added. This will allow me to add more to the Mediterranean however (and it really needs the space), perhaps round out where Rome is. Africa, I think needs a bit more work. South America possibly as well, but I sort of need an idea of which cities can be considered major not only there, but elsewhere. Vladivostok will defiantly get added in with it’s own space.

      I picked black for impassables, since it tells me that there is nothing there, no play space, it’s simply temporary, and they are there for the designer’s benefit.

      I’m not sure where else to put a rounded Sea Zone, I’m considering more though.

      Regarding the Philippines territory, is the Airbase and Navalbase there removed?

      Who controls Finland? There are units there.

      The UK appears to have 30 IPCs held, but you list them starting with 29. Is this an error or correct?

      Lastly, you list Germany having 48 IPCs, but the control marker’s indicate only 46. Is this an error or correct?

      @Frederick:

      Hi Ryuzaki_Lawliet, you could….

      A. add more inf to Russia.

      B. add to the German navy in some areas.

      Those are some thoughts I have right now.

      I’ll probably do this. Give me about a week to try and mess with the default setup.

      Maybe 4 or 6 more submarines should be good for Germany, with a Transport and Cruiser near Africa to provide more options for their stuff there. No starting US units save for 1 Infantry. Maybe.

      Any ideas on how the setup can be changed for balance? No changes in rules is one requirement, the person I play with does not like going over new rules unless it’s part of a new packaged game.

    • RE: Axis & Allies: 1939 Wishlist

      @SS:

      Why wait for LH, just get HBG’s Global 39 game and add pieces to that game with your own rules. They have been adding new pieces with rules for the pieces on there website. Change the starting ICP’s and mess around with it.

      I have 1 D6 39 game and 1D12 39 game that is more advanced than HBG’s 39 game with the pieces you mentioned ( and more ) in your posts. I can post cost and values if you want.

      I already gave someone reasons why. Anyway, I don’t like the map used for 1939, too many oversized territories that see little action, and the ones that do are too small. It’s worse than the official A&A games. The game itself is fine, but I wouldn’t play it more than once on table, I would prefer if someone released a Triple A version of it already, I would play more often. My major gripe with it is the IPCs, too little, so many 0 IPC territories it’s almost laughable. The political rules are also ridiculous, too many.

      I can imagine, at most, we would only get Canada, India, and two axis powers as new nations, with the two best candidates being Finland and Siam. Siam since Japan is all alone in the east side of the map, and Finland since it will allow the winter war to take place and give Russia something to do till Germany attacks.

      I would prefer neutral pieces to come with the game, but I can settle with a printed images.

      For neutral rules, something akin to WW1 1914 would be most suitable, that way, neutrals like Mongolia would be only friendly to Russia but neutral to everyone else, and can solve the Poland issue, Poland would be pro-UK only.

      @Ryuzaki_Lawliet:

      New Powers: Canada, and some extra Axis nations (can’t think of any, sorry fellas)

      New Units: Split Infantry into Conscripts and Elites to provide a weaker and stronger variant, Tanks into Light and Heavy classes for same reasons, 4 artillery types (anti-air, anti-mechanized, coastal defense, and your basic model for infantry divisions), include a Tank destroyer unit, two or three Fighter types, a defensive fort unit, and a couple of sea units.

      You want each current unit to be split into 4 different units with unique cost, values and abilities. Need to use a 12 sided dice then. You also want nation specific sculpts for every units, so we must multiply the current sculpt count with 4, and add a number of new nations too. I figure Hasbro will need to make a lot of sculpts that will never make it to the table.

      READ, and I only listed Artillery with 4 sculpts, with only a few others with only 2. I also meant actually 2 or 3 extra air units, it’s this percocet.

      @Narvik:

      @Ryuzaki_Lawliet:

      Starting IPCs: Germany 30, USSR 57, UK 29, France 24, Japan 26, USA 72, China 19, Canada 13, ANZAC 14, Italy 17

      From exactly whom did you get this numbers ?

      I got Harrisons book of the world economy during WWII, and his numbers don’t look anything like yours. And even if USA had the greatest Gross Domestic Production of the world in 1939, they only used 1 % of that for military outlays. USSR had less GDP than Germany in 1939 but spent 60 % on the military burden.

      To me it looks like your numbers is based on the A&A Global 1940 map, but all players start with 1939 borders.

      Economy is based on the entire war within reason, I want each nation being worthwhile to play, national objectives fill the void for Germany, as I stated. I suppose 40 IPCs is much better for Germany, but I don’t want them to outproduce USSR in round 1 without NO being used, otherwise no use in playing USSR, as they will fall surely while USA and UK saves the day which I have grown tired of in every other A&A game.

      New Rules: Losing your capital results in you losing half your IPCs and you can not perform combat moves for your next turn, and you need to select the territory with the highest IPC value and containing a VC as your new capital, IPC production is now at 50% till liberation. Victory conditions will be via a point system, similar to Young Grasshopper’s concept for 1940, that way if games end early, a victor IS decided. Combat goes through various phases, with units involved in many of these: example, the first phase is artillery phase, certain units can attack and defend in this phase, as well as only some can be allowed to be selected as casualties, then the following phase is aircombat phase, to which a similar process happens, thus many units can attack multiple times, after all phases are done, the combat ends and is the territory or sea zone, if unconquered, is treated as contested. Have neutrals work like they did in WW1 1914, only friendly to specific nations, sometimes of the opposite side (Romania friendly with UK and Germany for example).

      New extras: The map should be colorful and easy to read, all units for all powers should have their own mold, Europe, for scale, should have France with 5 territories, obviously less active territories and regions, such as the Americas and Africa, should be shrunk.

      Starting IPCs: Germany 40(changed), USSR 57, UK 29, France 24, Japan 26, USA 72, China 19, Canada 13, ANZAC 14, Italy 17

      National Objectives: Have it setup to where Germany gains tons of money via many one-time objectives, to allow them to later attack the USSR, but not to early. Go from there to get more ideas, but each nation should at least have 5.

      New VCs: Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, and more, each nation needs at least 5 for error room. Add VCs to neutral territories.

      Hey right on Ryuzaki ! Sounds fun! If I’m Germany I’m liking those 12 subs! When I get some time (where does it all go ?) I’ll give it a spin.

      You played in the lobby do you have a saved game you can post with the setup ?

      Here you go

    • RE: Alternate Global 1942 Setup

      @barney:

      Nice to see you’re still at it Ryuzaki! A summary on how your test games have gone would be way cool :)

      Most ended before they really started, people in the lobby’s don’t seem to like doing anything different.

      In the previous setups, Japan usually dominated the pacific. In the first one, Germany was crushed by the allies, in the second it was more balanced.

      In this current setup, things can go either way every round with dice. I only recommend LL if you are one of those people who does not like the dice deciding things for you, but I prefer dice since it’s more realistic to how battles can go, sometimes the larger and more powerful forces still lose.

      Russia has plenty of steam early on, they can capture 5 territories in the first round, but I have seen things go badly if the dice screws with them too much. Japan usually destroys most allied navies at the start, but also loses much of her own forces, her purchases have to be divided on her lands forces and her navy, she needs to capture those pacific islands to cripple UK pacific. USA typically will crush the Japanese forces around Midway and Hawaii, and must decide on Germany, Italy, or Japan first. China tucks into it’s shell most of the time. Germany usually only has enough to make one counter attack in an average game, and must reinforce it’s position in the eastern front (practically, both Russia and Germany exchange blows for several rounds), she needs to help Italy out in the Mediterranean so that she can crush Egypt early, her submarine presence is dominant early (12 subs!). The British are the most in trouble, losing most of her navy around the UK, likely cut off from the Suez canal, and her pacific economy crippled after Japan deals blows to the islands. Italy usually at this point will be able to go after Egypt, or Trans-Jordan, you want to keep the UK out, or you may as well quit, especially if America goes after you. ANZAC usually clumps it’s surviving naval units together, and plays the waiting game, it’s survival depends on America helping out or not. France is just there to be supportive, her air units are the most useful things going for her (but hey, she has more options than even the default 1940 scenario)

      My focus is making a strong Russia, with plenty of units. Japan having a large navy, that usually is heavily damaged early, while being a bit underpowered in asia without more units. USA is a beast, typically kills one axis nation regardless of which side wins. China has lots of units, but never plays offensive. Germany needs to be underpowered in the eastern front initially to reflect the historical situation, playing support for Italy in the south. UK is weak and vulnerable, but is involved heavily. Italy can only survive with German support, but is still interesting to use. ANZAC plays as the most serious enemy to Japan in the pacific initially, and aids her British ally. France actually can do stuff for once.

      The balance is in my opinion really good, but be weary, dice can change things quickly much more in this than the 1940 default game. I can be wrong though, I have played this about 20 times on my own (me versus me), and only 2 times against actual people (online though)

    • RE: Alternate Global 1942 Setup

      I’m not sure, but the Western Axis might be a little weak, I still want a strong Russia though.

      I’ll probably add some extra Italian units and some German infantry and aircraft to help them.

      Japan is quite dominant in the pacific, so probably more ANZAC, UK, USA, and French naval units.

      But I need your opinion to confirm.
