As you are successfully posting turns to this forum you must have the current stable release of TripleA installed.
However the current stable is always downloadable here:
https://triplea-game.org/download/
The map version of Global1940 (including BM) indeed is outdated.
Just update the map through TripleA.
So in TripleA go to “Download Maps” and update the map.

Yes. Just assign the “Does Nothing (AI)” to the players/nations that you want to skip.
@Avner OK, so you are using the preconfigured GMail setting. Have you by any chance checked out the link provided with the error message?

One of the reasons for your error might be that you need to enable “less secure apps” in your Google Account.
Please try that.

Of course you can play the TripleA-variant, too, as @barnee said.
@CaptainNapalm Chromebooks run with ChromeOS, that is a different OS from those TripleA is made for. Usually you cannot run TripleA on Chromebooks, as they do not support Java natively.
Now newer chromebooks allow to install and run some Linux apps. Personally I have never tested that, so I cannot tell neither whether TripleA would run or not nor how easy or difficult that might be.
But as you said that you don’t know much about computers you should be warned.
@djensen You can of course count my Gold-support in. But unfortunately I get a “Paypal system error - Try again later” when clicking “Buy Now” in the “2021 Support Drive-box” on the right.

This is the culprit. Your TripleA runs with an outdated Java that includes outdated security certificates.
Now you need to manually delete the above “1.8.0_66” directory.
As you have already installed the latest Java you might be just fine at that point.
You might need to reinstall TripleA then (just try it out before).
This procedure results in TripleA using the current Java with current SSL-certificates, then.

@CaptainNapalm Github is the platform where as well the engine as maps are developed/maintained. Adding that to the notes is a process done there, too. I will add your suggestion to that issue.
Wouldn’t be the only case where fake mail-addresses are used by spammers.
Anyway I’ll mention @djensen here to raise his attention.
The new stable version of TripleA 2.x has been released.

Note that savegames from version 1.9 are not compatible with the new release.
So it is recommended to finish your current games with the 1.9-version and to start new games with the new 2.x-version.
Also you and your opponent need to be on the same version. So make sure you are compatible before starting the game.
You can install both (and even more) versions side by side on your computer, just be sure that you choose different installation directories during the setup-routine:
When you execute the setup you come to a point where you are asked about to install into a directory, usually that is
C:\Program Files\TripleA\
Now the task is not to install another version into the same directory - in that case you would overwrite the present installation - but into a different one.
So when it comes to the above mentioned dialogue simply click into the line where the installation path is indicated and change it to
C:\Program Files\TripleA_whatever\
You will then install another version side by side.
Later be sure to know which version you open with which shortcut/icon on your desktop.
You could rename the shortcut name to contain the version behind it.
