I really have been wanting good Japanese pieces since 1984.  Knowing that they are on the way gives me that kid at Christmas feeling that I haven’t had in many years.  Sometimes it’s the little things that go a long way……

    • RE: Wizard of the coast is sending out additional playing pieces

Here’s the email that I sent them.  They sent me not just a few chips but an entire bag of chips.  Of course, I sent them a warm thank you after the pieces arrived too.  Feel free to use the text as a guide if any of you folks are interested in doing so.

      Dear sirs and madams,

I recently bought Axis & Allies 1914 and found out that there are just enough playing pieces for initial setup but not for playing the game. I have been a fan of the title since its inception in 1984 and have bought almost every edition published over the years. While this game is loads of fun, it would be really nice if you could send me the following additional pieces in order to facilitate easier gameplay and eliminate the frustration associated with the lack of pieces included:

      • 4 German Infantry
      • 4 British Infantry
      • 2 German Artillery
      • Some extra chips

      My address is:

      (Your address here)

Thank you in advance for any support that you can provide and I look forward to future releases!

      Sincerely,

      (Your name here)

I wrote them a letter a while back about too few pieces and they sent me out whatever I wanted no questions asked.  They provided excellent customer service in my book.

The ones pictured actually look like the yellow-gold to me even though they are labeled as orange.

Britain would simply move into Spain and pay the 3 IPC fee.

Also, Britain would produce a factory in Gibraltar on turn 1.  Turn three meant lots of stone tanks rolling forth!  The second edition rules worked much better.

    • Fortress America Question

Hey guys, I have a question for you.  I bought FA back in 1986 when it was new and played it many times over the years.  I recently bought the new edition figuring that I’d try it out.  While reading through the new manual I was struck by the fact that it seems you CAN move into vacant enemy city territories with only helicopters during Action Sequence 6 “Invasion” (originally simply called “second movement”) so long as the city territory in question:

      • Was declared for battle during step 2.

      • Is now vacant of enemy units of course.

      • Is not a declared territory in which a battle occurred and only the attacker’s bombers survived.

In effect, you CAN capture a city using just helicopters that have moved in during “Invasion” movement.

I thought for sure that you had to move in either foot an/or mechanized units as well…at least that’s how we always played.  So, I went back to my old '86 manual and thumbed through it.  To my amazement, I couldn’t find anything stating that foot and/or mechanized units had to be present in order to move into an empty and declared enemy city territory during second movement!  Have I been playing the game wrong for over 20 years??  Or am I just missing the rule?

    • RE: HBG - Axis & Allies Parts/Accessories and Custom Piece Sets Store!

I posted a note on their facebook page about this.  There should be a basic formula for every nationality; units that exist in every set.  Various bonus units could be included on a nation by nation basis.  For HBG to achieve their goal of replacing the OOB units, each nation needs at a minimum:

      Land:
          -Infantry
          -Artillery
          -Tanks
          -Self Propelled Artillery
          -Mechanized Infantry/Armored Car

      Air:
          -Fighters
          -Bombers
-Dive Bombers OR Torpedo Bombers OR Light Bomber  (Sculpt would depend on nation)
          -Air Transport

      Sea:
          -Fleet Carrier
          -Light Carrier
          -Battleship
          -Cruiser
          -Destroyer
          -Submarine
          -Transport

Because of mold sizes, these units would most likely be realized over the course of a few sets, similar to what is being done with the Japanese sets at present.  There will be room for extra “bonus” sculpts in the various sets.  This is where pocket battleships, light cruisers, jets, paratroopers, tank destroyers, etc. could be fit in.  IMO this formula is the most efficient and will yield the best results both economically and from a gaming perspective.  It would also provide consistency (which is perhaps the most important factor) throughout the entire range of nations being offered.

Now that things are up and running, HBG will definitely need to address missing US sculpts in order to round out their offerings.  This includes artillery, a fleet carrier (if the Midway Class carrier is going to be a larger than normal sculpt) a cruiser, light cruiser, destroyer, submarine and transport.
