    • RE: The Japan problem – 41 scenario

      @AxisOfEvil:

      Are you sure you are not referring to the '42 scenario??  I see no possible way that the usa sunk 3 AC, 6 fighters, 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 2 destroyers, 5 trans with 1 ac, 1 sub, maybe 1 destoyer if japan does not kill it, 4 fighters, 2 bombers by round 2 or 3.

      We played the 41 scenario. I remember, as USA, building all sea units for the first few turns, while Japan built a Industrial Complex and started invading Russia. USA caught their fleet by surprise, separated in two different sea zones, and crushed it. I can’t recall the details of Japan’s moves, but it sounds like they made a mistake separating their fleet early.

      Look at it this way, if Larry see everyone giving the game a 10 he has nothing to improve on!  :lol:

      People:

      please rate the game a 10. that’s all it takes to beat out the other games. Please do this and trump Acricula or whatever that lame game is called.

      AA50 is not a 10, at least I don’t think it is, by a lot. I gave it a 7. To be a 10 it should have a more solid rulebook, tech rules that don’t insta-win game by luck, NOs that can be tracked on the map, and even though the new map is nice, it’s far FAR from perfect (too many key territories are STILL too small, the nation map colors are terrible as are the territory borders), the game is SUPER pricey for what you get, and finally the Russian and Italian unit colors are way too similar. AA50 is a 7. 10 is perfect, AA50 is not.

      You don’t get the point - Axis & Allies won’t ever be a “10” game if we don’t vote it a 10 now.  If everyone votes 10’s for AA50, it will put it at the top of the list, which in turn will show that the game has a big following and the game in enjoyed, which in turn will lead Avalon Hill to continue developing the game (which hopefully means that it will get better and better).
      Right?
      Thanks.

      I get the point but don’t agree with it, sorry. I gave AA50 a score I think it deserves, and won’t give other games above it a unfairly low score just to bump AA50, nor do I condone it. Seems unfair to me.

      So what about this map?

      Very nice. How big does it print out and why is there a chart floating in the Atlantic. :)

      My home printer doesn’t have a “page set up” tab or area.

      What is the model #/make of your computer? what is the operating system?

      Your computer ( not printer) must have these options

      My home computer is built by parts, do it doesn’t have a make/model. My home computer uses Vista premium 64-bit, my work uses WinXP. I’ll check for those options at work on Monday.

      click your printer ( i have 3 you may have 1 just click the one you want to print)
      click printing preferences
      page set up
      poster printing
      specify

      then toggle on the following:

      all
      print cut/paste lines
      divided into is up to the number of pieces you want…take 16

      My home printer doesn’t have a “page set up” tab or area. Looks like it might be a printer specific option. :(

    • RE: The Map is fine, but…

      @Imperious:

      Thats easy. you need to set it as poster. You have your printer set for a page file that’s normal.

      You will also set the print to preview so your not wasting paper.

      When you change these settings when the preview is shown you will see the print of a very small area of the map.

      rest assured when you see this you have done it correctly and can print it.

      Try them and post if you have further problems.

      I couldn’t find a option to set it to “poster” anywhere in Adobe Reader and in either of the two printers I tried printing it on. where is this “poster” option, within Adobe Reader, the Adobe Print dialog, or within the printer specific options?

      We noticed this issue early on in our first game. Needless to say, Germany didn’t even think about building any ships. It’s just not going to happen unless UK and USA are asleep at the wheel.

      I must be dumm. I can’t figure a way to print out Imperial’s entire map on a OCE printer from Adobe Reader. No matter what i do it only prints out a single page, of some random area on the map.  :(

    • RE: The Japan problem – 41 scenario

      In my second game I, as the Ally player, focused the USA on Japan, the UK on waaay to many objectives including Africa, Normandy and Eurasia, and had Russian keeping Germany busy and trying to apply pressure to Eurasia. The USA destroyed Japan early in the game, sinking it’s entire Navy by turn … 2 or 3. The USA made two attempts at invading Japan, one with overwhelming odds and another with desperate odds. Of course, USA rolled horribly when they had overwhelming odds and didn’t take Japan. The second battle had average rolls and the USA invasion force was destroyed.

      We played with tech and without NOs. USA didn’t get any tech until turn ~9, Japan had some insignificant tech. Keep in mind, niether of the players (we played with two people, 1v1) are AA50 experts so I’m sure there were some mistakes made.

    • RE: 41?…42?..Nos?....Tech?....

      After two games, and much thought, I hate the NO rules because they are far too many of them to track, dragging down the game with everyone evaluating 6-10 extra territories a turn. Think about it, pretty much every nation has to not only track ~5 territories for their own NO, but has to keep an eye on the ~2 enemy nations around them to make sure they aren’t getting all of their NOs. Boooo, sorry, too much friggin work.

      They went WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overboard with the NOs. Instead, they should have made each nation have one obvious NO and there should have been a way to track each of them on the board with some sort of marker or plastic flag.

      @Funcioneta:

      What if Germany gets radar or improved industry?

      Helps, but not nearly as much as a game ender as certain techs are for certain nations. That’s the problem with techs, far too random, with certain tech results being game enders if the other side doesn’t get an equally game ending tech (USA or UK Hvy bombers, Japan with Improved Navy).

    • RE: 41?…42?..Nos?....Tech?....

      @rockrobinoff:

      @Bardoly:

      For truly balanced gameplay, one should never play with techs, because the difference in getting a tech on the first turn versus getting a tech on the seventh turn (I recently played an AA50 -41 Setup game and purchased 2 Research Tokens for UK on the first turn. After 5 turns without rolling a “6” with 2 dice, I paid 5 IPC more to roll 3 dice, and still didn’t get a tech until my seventh turn.)  can drastically alter the balance of the game.

      This is erroneus. As with most A&A decisions, it is a question of risk versus reward analysis. You bought your third tech die on round 6? Well, perhaps you should have bought it on turn 1, or no tech at all on any round, and saved the dollars for units. So you got unlucky when you rolled for tech. Sometimes your bombers get shot down by AA guns too…

      The major advantage of playing with tech is that new strategies will constantly appear based on the combination of techs on the board, keeping the game fresh longer.

      In our first game the UK discovered Heavy Bombers on turn 1. Even Rommel couldn’t come up with a plan tyo compete with this, unless the UK player simply didn’t buy and/or use his bombers.  Our game was pretty much over at the 10 minute point, all due to a lucky roll. The only hope Italy and Germany had was to shoot down every bomber that ran a SBR, which of course didn’t happen.

      AWESOME!!!  Thank you.

      I can’t find where somewhere mentioned how they printed this large map out on regular 8.5" x 11" paper and pieced it together. Any tips for this or approximate pricing to have a large printout of this made at Office Max/Depot?

    • RE: Problems using transports?

      Agreed on the learning process for the Atlantic Naval strategies. I forgot to mention one situation everyone should keep in mind for the UK Atlantic Navy. If UK loses it’s navy and doesn’t have enough income to buy a new navy in one turn that can repel the existing Germany/Italy air forces, they can no longer build ships without them getting sunk. This situation also occurred in previous editions, but the IPC breaking point in AA50 in MUCH higher now that you can’t build transports to soak up hits and defend against an attack.

      So, as UK, be VERY VERY careful that you don’t lose your navy and leave Germany/Italy with more aircraft than you can build a new navy to fight against. If this happens, you have a few (bad) options:

      • Hope is that the German/Italian airforce is killed some other way (unlikely if the Axis plays wisely)

      • Save your IPCs for next turn and spend 2+ turns of income on a new fleet; essentially forcing you to skip one buy phase

      • Give up on a Navy and spend all your IPCs on bombers for SBRs

      • Build a Industrial complex someone far enough away from Germany/Italy’s aircraft range and slowly build up a new fleet

    • Problems using transports?

      Is anyone else having a VERY hard time using transports in the Atlantic now that they don’t have any defense number? We’ve found that the only way to use transports is to have a HUGE fleet and move ALL your navy units together in one massive stack, otherwise they get killed easily by the German/Italian airforce.

      While this seems fine, it certainly limits the number of amphibious assaults you can perform in a game, unlike previous editions. It also forces both the UK and the USA to EACH build a MASSIVE Atlantic naval force because they can no longer defend each other when they perform Amphibious Assaults. This is okay for the UK, but the USA has it’s hands full building a massive Pacific fleet to fight Japan.

      The only Atlantic trick we’ve found is:

      • USA builds ground units in East USA, moves them to Eastern Canada

      • ALL UK and USA ships pile into sz8

      • USA transporters move from sz8 to sz1, pickup ground units from Eastern Canada, then move back to sz8 and drop the units into the UK, all in the same turn

      • USA ships are built in sz10 and moved to sz8. USA prays Germany never gets long range aircraft

      • Amphibious Assaults start out of sz10, with the entire stack of ships moving to the same location every turn

      If Germany or Italy has any reasonably sized airforce, we’ve found no way to separate Ally ships without getting all of your transports sunk. Gone are the days of moving transports around with a few other defensive units. You now have to move a massive fleet or send your transports on one way missions (something we’ve done and consider a calculated loss).

      Good stuff Imperious Leader. I checked out your download area on mediafire but didn’t see a map without the background pictures (the background terrain graphics for the territories is ok) and without the charts.

      Also, I had a difficult time figuring out what your files were, since many of them had difficult to understand filenames, many containing multiple instances of the word “copy”.

      I ended up downloading nearly every file and looking at each one, trying to figure out what they were. If it’s possible, could you use version numbers in your filenames? An example for a strategy planning map would be “AA50-map-Axis-41-strat_v12.pdf”.

    • Play with National Objectives?

      After playing AA50 twice, with and without NOs, I prefer to play without them, for these reasons:

      • NOs funnel players to specific parts of the map, limiting open strategies

      • NOs that aren’t yours are a PAIN to keep track of. Each nation has too many. One each would be better

      • NOs in a 2v2 game is very painful to track, and annoying  :(

      As I mentioned above, I really wish they would have given each nation one NO, not multiple. Also, I’m trying to figure out a good way to track them on the board without making a mess. My first thought was using flagpole-like stands showing which NOs are linked, but there are too many to clutter the map with, and too many of them have multiple variables.  Bah!! :(
