    • Looking for miniature replacements

      While I agree the minis in 1942 2e are fantastic, I find many of the pieces very hard to distinguish from one another, especially the non-carrier ships. Unlike most, I prefer all of the models to be the same sculpt, with different colors for identifying each nations units.

      Does anyone know if someone sells 5 different colors of the same unit sculpts that would work with 1942 2e (all 12 unit types)?  I looked at all of the products from Field Marshal Games and everything on eBay but couldn’t find what I’m looking for. Any ideas?

      @Canuck12:

      Thanks for the hard work DJ! I read the forums but love the articles too ;)

      Any official word yet on whether Honalulu is a VC or not? Book says no, map says yes. I have heard 2 different stories now about which to trust.

      Ditto!  I’m hoping there is at least an official word on this before the game arrives, preferably a FAQ. :)

      Yes. 1941 is also listed as preorder but not only are they shipping 1941, but some people have already received it from Amazon.  :-)

      Amazon shipped out 1941, any idea if they or anyone else is shipping 1942-2e?

    • RE: AA50 League and/or Tournaments

      @Cmdr:

      You should never put yourself in a position where one technology gained by the opponent will suddenly change the game.  IE, your fleet should assume the enemy has those long range fighters or those heavy bombers (or both).

      First turn Heavy bomber roll by an enemy UK or USA player. GG, you lose. Rommel wouldn’t even argue this.

      In other words, the best players will assume the enemy has all 12 technologies and act accordingly taking risks where they must, but being ready with a plan to recover should the technology come and the battle turn so as not to lose the war.

      The biggest tech advantage is one of the few extremely powerful techs (Hvy Bombers,  Paratroopers, Advanced Shipyards) are rolled on the first turn. Against a competent player you may as well just say “nice game, you win” and restart the game.

    • RE: AAR and AA50, 'A speedy game' Any tips..?
      • It’s faster to play 1v1 than playing one person per country.

      • The player with the next upcoming turn should plot out as much as possible before their turns starts, especially their purchases. Unfortunately, many decision hinge on the outcome of the previous players turn so you can’t plot too much without the results from the prior turn.

      • Give everyone their own dice to roll and a place to roll them, like a small box.

      • Roll combat dice simultaneously.

      • Players focusing on the game, when it’s not their turn, speeds up play a LOT!

      • As with all board games, and I’ve played hundreds, everyone needs to focus on keeping the game moving or it will come to a crawl.

      In short, A&A will take a LONG time, usually no less than 5 hours when not playing a computerized version. G/L

    • RE: AA50 League and/or Tournaments

      Keep in mind, the most over-powered tech was slightly put in check with the escort rule in the latest FAQ, and now SBRs from Heavy bombers won’t be as brutal. They’ll still sink almost any fleet but at least you can defend yourself against that and can now defend against massive Heavy Bomber SBRs. The insta-win paratrooper situation still exists though, but at least that can be defended. It’s really not worth trying to defend against having your fleet sunk by a LRA tech roll, it’s too crippling to the plans.

    • RE: AA50 League and/or Tournaments

      Correct me if I’m wrong here, but those who don’t like the randomness of the tech rules do so because of their opponents gaining a insta-win via tech. Sure, I’m all for tech if my opponent doesn’t use it, sign me up. Not going to happen.

      @Cmdr:

      However, any technologies discovered won’t come into play until the collect income phase.

      That does address the (defendable) problem with a sudden LRA fleet attack, but does nothing for the even worse early-game Heavy Bombers. I’m sorry, it’s extremely unlikely that anyone is is going  to beat me if I get a lucky first turn heavy bomber roll, nor do I think I can beat a competant player that gets a 1st/2nd turn heavy bomber roll. The only way I see even making a game of it is getting Radar.

      Who wants to play a game that can end on a lucky first turn roll? I don’t, especially for a tourney/league.

    • RE: Fixing Submarines in AA50

      Regular subs are weak when only one DD can thwart them. Super Subs (tech) are BRUTAL, but are purely offensive units. Agreed. For 2 attack, I think a 1 DD to 1 sub rule makes them useable without Super Subs tech.

    • RE: AA50 League and/or Tournaments

      @DarthMaximus:

      1.  Two separate divisions - one for 41 and one for 42?
      2.  NOs? Tech?
      3.  Sides chosen by random in-house roll?

      It is likely that we’ll do a tournament sometime this year, so sort of the same questions.
      1 - 41 or 42?  or both?
      2 - NO and tech (yes/no)?

      League:
      1. 2 divisions
      2. NOs: yes. tech, no (for every reason U-505 stated)
      3. Bidding is best

      Tourney:
      1. One or the other, 2 separate tourneys
      2. NOs: yes. tech, no (for every reason U-505 stated)

      Tell me how one can overcome with strategy a t1 Heavy bomber tech roll by your opponent? No one should ever lose when getting a t1 Heavy Bomber roll. Insta-win imo, and terrible for competitive play.

    • RE: Mass American Landing on Japan

      In a 41 game, I, as the USA, tried a Japan invasion similar to what you listed. In out game, USA caught the Japanese fleet separated and sunk every one of their ships. After a couple more turns the USA made a ~75% attempt at taking over Japan. They failed (1 Japanese fighter remained), and it cost the Allies the game due to the USA focusing 99% of their efforts in the Pacific. A handful of turns later USA attempted a low percentage attempt on Japan again and failed. Around this time USSR was completely run over and we called the game.

      Even with Japan beat back to only their homeland and a couple other random IPCs, they were still able to produce enough infantry to make a USA invasion extremely difficult due to the long transit time from Western USA and how easy it is to sink transports now. You almost have to move your entire navy together to protect your transports or risk getting them sunk by a bomber/fighter attack from every direction imaginable.

    • RE: Strategic Bombing of Germany

      @cond1024:

      There is no easy way to combat all out SBR on Germany, but if Britian is only buying bomers, then they aren’t buying navy or troops.  What I like to do with on G1 is build an AC to protect the baltic felt, then on each german turn I buy 1-2 naval ships usally subs, destroyers and transports.  By turn 3 or 4 I have a nice little navy to defend germany with from UK along with 2-3 transports which can threaten London, or I use them as a bridge to get infantry to Russia and Karelia quicker.

      With UK and/or USA operating a massive SBR campaign from the UK I don’t see how this can work. All they have to do is spend one turn sending their entire bomber force (and fighters, which will be in range) to sink every non-sub sea unit you have. It’s just not possible for Germany to maintain a non-sub fleet if UK/USA are using lots of bombers out of the UK. The new transport rule of 0 defense and can’t be taken as casualties pretty much means ships are dead vs bombers.

    • RE: Ultimate gamebreaker tech

      The randomness of the tech results make AA50 HORRIBLE for players that rather not have the outcome of a game decided by a single, unforeseen, and unpredictable die roll. I was hoping the tech rules in AA50 would be changed to be controlled and deterministic instead of what they have always been. The tech rules shouldn’t be used if you rather not have the game decided on the lucky roll of a turn 1 die roll.

      The first AA50 game we played UK got Heavy Bombers on turn 1. Unfortunately we didn’t know the game well enough, so we decided to keep playing, even though we had a feeling it was over already, and it was. UK (hvy) bombed both Germany and Italy into the Dark Ages (SBRs and sinking all boats) from turn 2 on, giving the Axis no chance to win.

      One of my qualms with AA50 is the absence of new tech rules that don’t break the game when achieved.

    • RE: First Impressions

      We also have difficulty identifying naval unit. they should have used some sort of subtle convention to easily identify them, such as a flat stern for CAs, rounded for DDs, and whatever.

      Every game someone weeps because they either misidentified a naval unit for a transport or accidentally used one ship for another during purchases, causing grief later. We would have been happy with the same models for each nations ships.
