    • RE: Best warships of WW 2

I’m sorry, but just slapping a tailhook on a Bf109 would not make it a viable carrier plane. The 109 had a light airframe & very strong torque at low airspeeds–not to mention its notoriously weak landing gear arrangement. It was difficult enough to take off & land a Bf109 from land bases–IMO it would be nearly impossible at sea. Upon hitting an arresting wire a 109 would probably just disintegrate–that is if it didn’t flip over onto its back first! The 109 was a buckin’ bronco & would probably have had to have been either completely redesigned or replaced by another aircraft better-suited to naval duty. Perhaps a modified FW190, but probably an all-new design…

    • RE: Should U.S. troops remain in Germany??

      @waraxis:

After rethinking about it I believe most should either be sent to the mid east for garrison duties or sent to South Korea. Just keep a few troops for training in Germany. Besides if u ask the average german I think they see their use as being over. The Cold War is over. However Ozone27 I do believe 100,000+ troops would make some difference in a NON-NUCLEAR WAR in the Korea area.

Of course 100,000 troops are very useful in a non-nuclear war, but in such a war, North Korea would stand virtually NO CHANCE–that’s why they developed nukes in the first place: to maintain leverage in a post-Cold War world. Everyone knows that given the hardships of day-to-day life in North Korea, the state would collapse within a few months of serious fighting with the West, possibly immediately. There’s NO WAY if war broke out, NK would allow it to develop along strictly conventional lines. They would either have to use their nukes or give up, simple as that. I’m not saying the NKs are wimps–just that they would have no realistic chance of defeating the US unless they used nuclear weapons. In this case 100,000 troops would make no difference…

As far as Germany goes–quite the contrary; most Germans do NOT want the American troops to leave because the US bases mean mega-$$$ to the German economy. Closing these bases would cause an outcry there similar to when Bill Clinton tried in vain to downsize the military here. Sure, peaceniks everywhere hate military bases, but in Germany most people appreciate the US presence…

What I wonder is what the strategic reason we are still so heavily deployed in Germany is? I’m sure its not just to make the Germans happy. Does anyone know the strategy involved?

    • RE: Do you think Germany should go for Brazil or Not ?

Last time I was in Germany somebody asked me, “So is soccer more popular in the US since your team did so surprisingly well in the World Cup playoffs?” I said,“We were in the World Cup playoffs? What’s that? Some kind of yachting thing?”

I took Brazil once as Germany on like my 2nd or 3rd game ever, but it’d be insane to try it now, unless I just didn’t give a damm. How do you GET there? That is the problem! You have to break out of the Med somehow & that means the USA & UK Airforce & NAVIES have to be completely neutralized for at least 2-3 turns. If you can do that, then screw Brazil, take UK instead!

So lets say you take the Suez Canal and defying all logic, load up 2 INF for a trip around the Cape toward the south coast of Brazil. This is such a bizarre ploy the Allies are sure to see it coming & reinforcing Brazil will not take that much time or effort out of their busy schedules.

To sum up, unless you have temporarily won absolute mastery of the North Atlantic as Germany, going for Brazil is just sheer foolishness. And if somehow you HAVE temporarily won absolute mastery of the North Atlantic (the holy grail of Germany), then what are you bothering w/ Brazil for, you’ve practically won already!

    • RE: Placing new naval units

Depends on what rules you play by.

2nd-Edition rules were “Naval Occupation”. That is, an IC could not produce naval units if the sdjacent SZ(s) were enemy-occupied. You could build them on Purchase Units Phase, but unless the waters were cleared of enemy units, the naval units could not be placed & were lost!

3rd-Edition rules are “No Naval Occupation”. In this case, newly purchased naval units can be placed in enemy-occupied SZs. Unless the enemy moves out or is destroyed before his or her Combat Phase, a battle occurs between your naval units & theirs…

Which brings us to a conundrum I haven’t yet solved. Say you place new naval units onto an enemy-occupied SZ. Now what if on your ally’s turn, he or she attacks the enemy units in said SZ? Are your units allowed to join the fight as an “allied force”, or are your units considered to be “not involved”? I’ve always wondered about this…

    • RE: Q: Aircraft carriers and fighters

“No” and “no”, respectively. Newly built aircraft are placed on land territories with ICs that you own, and if they are to be deployed on CVs, they must be flown there afterward.

I don’t see what 100,000 troops can do against a country armed w/ nuclear weapons (even SCUD-type ones) except die. But as to why those troops are still in Germany–beats me; anybody know the strategic reasons? It’d be interesting…

Why is Kumano my fave? Well, mainly 'cuz it’s story is practically a microcosm of the Japanese armed forces in WWII–war was hell, & they LOST. Check this out, if you’re game–

…long, but I just printed it out & read it at my leisure.

      For a pic:

These are from the WONDERFUL combinedfleet.com website–a must-see for all WWII naval enthusiasts!

      @TG:

I won the Battle of Gettysburg for the Confederacy, which forced a favourable treaty on the South’s terms.

      Wha-What the hell?

Well, obviously he is referring to the little-known fact that Napoleon Bonaparte would have commanded the Confederate forces at Gettysburg, but his shoes were untied & he was distracted by a kid & a little band of time-travelling little people who stole all his gold–wait, oh yeah that never happened! Just what the heck IS Emu talking about anyways???

    • RE: Question about transports

In basic A & A, you must unload all troops from a TR on the same territory, & once the troops are offloaded, the TRs movement ends. You CAN p/u troops from different locations (say load one INF in Phillipines, move TR to Okinawa, load another INF at Okinawa, move to Sea Of Japan SZ, unload both INF in Manchuria), but they all must be unloaded on the same territory (in the example, the 2 INF could be unloaded on either Manchuria or Japan Home Islands but not one on each).

In any case where a unit is involved in combat on Combat Phase, that unit’s move ends & it may not move again on Non-Combat Movement. The only exceptions are FTRs & BMRs which may fly out on Combat Move, be part of a battle in Combat, then fly back on Non-Combat Movement.

It’s possible I’m wrong about the landing of units on 2 land territories adjacent to the same body of water as the TR, but if I am, the rule is logical, & intuitive & I would recommend using it anyway…

    • RE: Techs???

What you guys don’t seem to get is the gambling aspect of Technology.

I personally do not gamble, because I don’t want to lose money, but the gamblers’ credo is “don’t gamble what you don’t want to lose”!

There are times in the game when someone w/ a gambler’s heart will want to roll for tech. No matter what the odds, there is a chance that any time you roll for tech–be it one die or 60-- that you will win it. It’s luck and guts, pure & simple.

Now the odds you will get a particular tech are very low, but there are many situations where several different techs would help you in different ways.

The fact is that while theoretically speaking, it takes 60–or whatever–dice to get a particular tech, there is always the possibility that the next roll is the one! That’s called gambling, and if you are a gambler tech may be for you!

Anyone who has been defeated by someone who got Heavy Bombers or LRA or whatever in 3 rolls can tell you that it CAN PAY OFF!

      Ozone27

P.S. Not only that, but what is the alternative? Spending 5 IPCs on an ARM may seem like a worthwhile investment, but what if IT scores no hits ever & is eliminated? That can happen w/ the dice–happens all the time in fact. That is a “waste” of money too!

YES! That happened to me once! I was playing Germany w/ a particularly brash & boastful Japanese ally. I was doing wonderfully in Europe while he was overextending & getting his a$$ kicked royally in Asia. It reached a fateful point where I knew we would’ve won if it hadn’t been for his overreaching aggressiveness & I became bitter & (regrettably) rather uncooperative. He BEGGED me to throw a FTR in to help him defend India (which he had just taken, but with only 2 guys, & loyal ally that I was I obliged–ONLY ON CONDITION I COULD FLY BACK NEXT TURN!

Well needless to say he–on a complete whim & without consulting me–he moved his INF out to make another 40%-60%-chance attack (odds NOT in our favor) & SURPRISE he lost! Then he retreated–to SOUTHEAST ASIA, TOTALLY ABANDONING MY FTR TO THE ALLIES!!! The Allies almost regretfully plugged my FTR & w/ it India (& the whole game, really). They were actually very polite & apologetic about it, knowing I’d been sold out by my self-serving, glory-seeking, so-called “ally”…

Needless to say, a ‘grudge’ was born…

This game was 2 years ago. Do the math…
