Exactly, TG. So why not help them become citizens, instead of turning them away?

    • RE: Should U.S. troops remain in Germany??

If (and it’s a big “if”) it comes to the point where the interests of the government are in direct opposition to those of the people, a general strike has been proven to be more effective–not to mention more peaceful & civilized–an option than armed (and hopeless) guerrilla war of a few combatants vs. the might of a national army. General strikes (and the threat thereof) have been used–most recently in the case of Yugoslavia–very effectively to oust unpopular regimes.

This is a waaay better option than having various, independent armed forces tramping around their country in opposition to one another. That was tried before here in the USA. It is doubtful to me that had the state militias been under the direct control of the Federal government, that the Southern States could’ve contemplated a secessionary movement. In the end, they lost anyway, because their opponents could call on greater industrial power, manpower & especially organization than the South could. Is it good that the Confederacy were able to make their opinions felt by brute force of arms due to a virtually independent State-level militia force? HELL NO!

They had little chance then, and modern militas have even less chance now.

Plus a general strike is effective within just a few DAYS and not the months & years of bloodshed a civil war unleashes…

Wait a minute, the Med? Are you sure you don’t mean Black Sea? I can’t see how the Bulgar ships could get into the Med–be interesting if you got the info…

Of course, if we’re talking about the Black Sea, we’re talking about the Red Navy. I do know the Rumanians helped assemble some German Type-II (type II-is that right?) U-boats to take on the Soviet fleet operating there. That’s all I know…

    • RE: What to do with Japanese transport in Indian Ocean?

SUD: what are you looking to trade early-mid game w/ Japan?

I took a major defeat my last game (an unusual 2-player one) by not hurting UK enough as Axis. I fully believe T2 as Japan Hawaiian Islands invasion force should take Australia before anything else. Had I done this (& taken the opportunity to take India T2) I would’ve casue mayjor payne. As it was I was bottled up.

Problem is, what if you lose an INF in the 2 INF, 1 FTR attack on Hawaii? Put only 1 guy vs Australia? Seems like an awful risk…

      @Soon_U_Die:

      Ozone,

Your best bet when down to the BB only (and early) is to get it thru the canal, if possible, into the RedSea. There it can stay, or IndiaSz etc and provide Japan with a permanent air defence platform for her trannies….freeing one of the Jap Capital ships to go elsewhere. This isn’t always possible, but sometimes it is…otherwise, it’s just like you say.

Alternatively, I’ve used it in the Med to support the Jap fleet coming thru…but that’s another story.

      SUD

Dude, I would’ve LOVED to have done that…unfortunately I pulled an absolutely crapola 1st move in Africa & never had a ghost of a chance of siezing the canal.

You talkin’ Japs thru Atlantic, or thru Suez? What do you have in mind? Last time I pushed a Jap fleet thru Suez, the German fleet just sat there waiting for the linkup (it DID work BTW, but the combined fleets failed to take UK through an absolute total F***-UP on our combat move). I’ve never tried the Atlantic move, though I’ve read all about it. Elaborate…

A & A General Forum is turning me into wierdo! :o

OK my last 2 posts were way out for me, & I really don’t want to go political, so I will stop posting here after this one (…“think NICE thoughts, Ozone27” ) …

Xi, fair enough if that’s what you’ve heard from folks–can’t argue w/ opinions, & that may indeed be what you’ve heard (SF is home to A LOT of diverse opinions, not all of them Liberal: that’s just the stereotype).

But I don’t feel the least bit sorry for doctors who “have” to administer health care to illegals who can’t pay. Ever heard of the &%#$@*&$ Hippocratic Oath? Sorry it’s such a pain in the a$$ to follow it…

Cali has a lot of illegal aliens because people put up w/ it. People put up w/ it because they are useful for performing crap jobs no one else wants to do for low pay & no benefits. People only pay lip service to wanting them out. Until we make it easier for law-abiding, productive people to be here & work here legally (and for “human-being-level” wages & benefits), then the state ought to have to pay some of their expenses (including medical care, since that’s just basic humanity & people who are “off the books”, and have lousy incomes usually can’t afford it).

As soon as the taxes go up, people will be like:“What’s going on here?” and wonder why after all these years of BS from the politicians, the illegals are STILL HERE! Then they will either kick all of them out & we’ll have to pick our own crops & blow our own leaves & do all the lousy s**t jobs ourselves–for minimum wage of course, which is like $6.75 here I think now–or they will finally wise up & start accepting that whoa, maybe most of these illegals ought to be “legals” after all…

That is all. Return to your posts.

      I promise I’ll be a good boy from now on… 8)

My crew plays w/ very similar rules as yours, BigBlocky, except NO Axis Advantage :o . BBs are 1-Hit & Russia is Restricted. Been trying to institute a bid for a while, but until everyone can agree the game is slanted, then a bid is useless (SOMEONE will always bid down to 0). Until then I’m gonna try to institute 20-24 IPC Industries–might help a little…

BigBlocky makes a GREAT point–without the TRs, the Italian BB is totally useless to Germany. Just recently I played a game where all my German TRs were sunk on T2. My BB sat in port at Southern Europe for the WHOLE GAME, only trying to make a break for it when the game was obviously lost–whereupon it was finally sunk. It just wasn’t worth it to the Allies to sink the BB, since I couldn’t place a TR w/out it being sunk so they knew I wouldn’t buy any. Actually my greatest hope at that point in the game was to somehow use the BB in a suicide strike against the UK fleet (supporting the aircraft) but the opportunity to position it for one never materialized & it was wrecked trying to high-tail it to Japan. Pretty pathetic!

      Don’t lose the TRs.

Not talking about that, I’m talking about the attitude that there are hordes of illegal immigrants flooding California tapping into welfare & food stamps & draining the government. I have yet to meet a Mexican immigrant who was not industrious (legal or not) & yet I have seen hordes of white folks leeching off the system like there is no tomorrow! Not saying its a rule–I’m sure there are plenty of “lazy” immigrants–but judging from my own observation–& the behavior of my own friends–they ought to make it EASIER for Mexicans to become Americans, not harder. There’d be a lot fewer illegals, & a lot more valuable citizens…

Obviously illegals ought not have a DL. That’s ridiculous…

      Whelp, I’m very white and, strangely, a Democrat  ! I’m not even in a union… :o !

What could the Republicans do to attract more non-white voters?

Hmmm…I suppose they could stop promoting oppression against Mexican immigrants. Maybe they could stop tolerating the ultra-right-wing racist elements within their own party…might be a good one…

Oooh, & here’s a great one: they could stop trying to curtail the rights of gays to peacefully pursue their happiness nationwide! That last one might net a few more “white” votes for the Republican party…and “white” votes are apparently what count (at least judging from the Florida presidential elections)…

Hope I don’t offend you. It’s all in good fun. Some of my best friends are Republicans, really!

    • RE: Should U.S. troops remain in Germany??

If I may be so bold as to risk a 3RD POST IN A ROW I’d also like to sound off on this idea of an “armed populace” keeping tabs on the government…

Might’ve worked in the Revolution, but as I recall from my history studies, we would’ve gotten our butts kicked anyway had we not had a GOVERNMENT (that is the Continental Congress) & a constituted regular ARMY to enforce its edicts. Yanny, back me up here…

Also, citizen militia are indeed a gallant and stirring concept, but in the face of modern weaponry what can an “armed populace” hope to accomplish? Ever seen an M1A2 “Abrams” MBT? A FINE piece of ordinance that is–I shudder to think of having to face one w/ a 30.30 hunting rifle :o . It would be pointless and you know it. So should a private citizen have access to an AFV–y’know; to keep up w/ the Joneses? C’mon…

Forget about nuclear weapons. I shouldn’t even have to bring them up…

Now, I am against banning the use of firearms. I DO think that it is a RIGHT of all Americans to keep & bear arms–but only up to the point where they infringe another’s RIGHTS (talking Constitution here, brother–L., L. & P. of H.). Obviously the idea of bearing arms–that is, small arms–to somehow “protect” oneself from the government is patently ridiculous. Whoops! I guess we’ll hafta go through civilized channels, like VOTING!

    • RE: Should U.S. troops remain in Germany??

      @waraxis:

With all due respect F_alk the scary thing about europe is that people there live under a big government system, that promotes the idea of women not having children, no gun rights, high taxes, and a very one-sided political system!!! Now that is scary!! The people don’t realize how they are screwing themselves. In a 60 Minutes show they said in a few generations Italians could become a minorty in their own country, because of low birth rates and mass Non-Italian Immagration. When I lived in what was known as WEST GERMANY at the time i rarely meet a german women who had 2 or more kids. Not only that some had no kids and didn’t plan to have any!!! And if i brought it up they say that women having kids is so right wing???!!??? NOW THAT IS SCARY WOMEN OF EUROPE THINKING THAT HAVING KIDS IS SO RIGHT WING!! And now I have learned this problem is in Japan!!

Not trying to start a war with you F_alk but please don’t disrespect my country by saying that gun rights are scary!! The big mistake of the British was allowing the 13 colonies to have their guns. Do you know what happens when you give up your guns rights you are asking for a police state!!! I hope this doesn’t start any bad blood between us F_alk I do respect your replies here on the forum I just think that you wouldn’t want anybody saying anything bad about Germany( I wouldn’t either my family on my mothers side is from the bavaria area in Germany)so please don’t say anything bad about my country. I hope this isn’t taken as a flame of anykind. Please excuse the saying

Now, waraxis you’re just being silly.

First of all, Germany is not anti-family: last I checked, they still paid a stipend to new mothers to help pay the costs of having a child! Where does that money come from?

      Hint: taxes!

So in a few years “Italians” will be a minority in their own country. What IS an “Italian”? Europe has a problem (IMO) w/ identifying their national identities too much w/ race & culture. Where I live (in California) there were a lot of scare tactics in the '80s & early '90s that there would soon be more “non-whites” than “whites”. Now, there ARE in fact more “non-whites” than there are “whites”. Do you know what has happened? Do you know what earth-shaking changes have rocked our great state?

      Clue: nothing!

F_alk wasn’t trying to denigrate the US 'cuz we have guns. A LOT of Germans own guns–you just hafta be in law enforcement, or have a hunting licence to legally own one. So–OMIGOD!–they require that if you OWN a gun, you hafta have a good reason you’d want to use it: and know HOW to use it! F_alk was getting at the deeper point that maybe our problem with gun-VIOLENCE has to do with the way we view the world from childhood on up. Not a bad point. And I certainly don’t see any anti-gun brainwashing in evidence here…

      C’mon man. READ the posts…

    • RE: Should U.S. troops remain in Germany??

P.S.–it’s a tad insulting that you would say people from Hamburg don’t know much about American soldiers. A.) It implies American soldiers are somehow not as good as UK soldiers. B.) It also rather denigrates the insight of people from Hamburg, many of whom I happen to like a great deal…

Nah…. i am from Hamburg, so i think it’s not too insulting. And the first implication was not intended… and i can’t see that it is in there somewhere, i just wanted to say that the people can tell more about the troops stationed at their places, and that stationing depends mainly on whose occupation zone it was.

Is it really common in the states that kids do that kind opf nonsense? … I suppose the answer is yes. Another scary thign about the US, next to everyone having the right to own a gun. Just think of when “one leads to the other”, these kids get their first guns, will they necessarily become more sensible about endangering other people?

OK…if you are from Hamburg, then you’re ok. I love that town…

Yes it IS common in the states, although when I was thinking about it, I can see how it would be VERY shocking to a German. Of course, people should be on better behavior in other peoples’ countries. Here, though it is pretty normal (though of course, frowned upon).

Interesting point about the gun issue. I wonder if there IS a connection to that “irresponsibility” represented in the kids behavior, & that of the grownups. I suspect you may be onto something, bro…

Re: Sub rules … keep in mind that all SUBS retreating on the same round of battle must retreat to the same sz(through which at least one attacking unit entered the battle.)

Are you sure? I thought naval units had a little more flexibility & could retreat back to ANY empty SZ–not just one from which one of the attackers came from, as would be the case w/ land units.

The key term is back. That is, “generally away from the enemy concentrations”.

WHHHAAATT! :x You mean to tell me the usual capture rules don’t apply to the Karelia IC? Who made THAT rule up! I thought the rule was–“One can only place units on an IC they have owned since the beginning of their turn.” Simple as that. Case closed. If USSR retakes the Karelia IC after the Germans sieze it, they hafta wait a turn to use it–JUST LIKE ANY OTHER IC ON THE BOARD.

If this is the normal rule I am outraged! This game is even MORE heavily biased against the Axis than I thought! That is just ridiculous & I refuse to play by those rules…

      (…breathing into paper bag…gasp…gasp)

Ok…I’m better…Now that I read the post more closely I see what it means. It’s not really “however” its more of an example. I thought you meant if USSR takes the IC they can use it same turn…ok
