No fuel, no flying. No Caucases, no fuel…

No wonder German Infantry about 1944 had a saying about aircraft:

“…if its green, its American. If its tan, its British. If it’s invisible, it’s one of ours…”

…really though, keep in mind that the Allies, if they work together, don’t really have to necessarily get perfect “value” out of each piece like the Axis do: might be one reason why SBR seems to work better for them than the Axis–though I am still partial to German-Japanese joint bombing of USSR.

Also, 4 of the 5 countries start the game w/ a BMR–this could be counted as “free” to whomever’s keeping score…

Cool way of looking at this…thanks for the info…

    • RE: Did you ever play alone?

I recently had a horrible experience in online vs. mall purchasing. About November last year I spent hours trying to find a good-condition version of Diplomacy and I finally got one off Ebay. I spent about $20 and it was in very good condition and my friends and I have played it and (the males at least) liked it. Cool, right?

Like 2 weeks later they re-released the game–1st new version I’d seen in YEARS!!! And it’s got these awesome metal pieces and EVERYTHING (forgive my childlike enthusiasm!@ ) for $40 bucks! Now do I buy the game, of which I already have a decent version that works fine and I spent forever tracking down, or do I just sulk and play with the old version…???

3rd Option: I wait for the new edition to come down to $20 bucks on Ebay…hmmmm…

    • RE: Attacking the german fleet!

I used to try to sink every Allied ship in the Med/North Atlantic, and it is possible, but I found I was losing too many aircraft. The most important things are to sink the Allied fleets in the Med (to prevent the BMR + whatever’s in the Med attack by UK) and to sink the fleet in the North Sea (to put off any D-Day attampts until you are ready).

Over time I’ve come to believe that UK SUB to be one of the most important kills of the game. Sink the BBs obviously, but sinking that SUB gives you precious time in the Med to move into Africa…

Our group doesn’t play w/ Russia Restricted OR 2-Hit BBs. Nothing against RR, but I agree with Horten on 2-Hit BBs;I also think that 2-Hit BBs takes away from the BB’s historical vulnerability to aircraft–I know A & A BB units represent ALL surface units (CAs, DDs, etc.) but still, 2 hit seems a bit much…

    • RE: Resource Management is the key.

I sort of see what Ghoul is saying but I think it applies only to a situation (like UKs) where the enemy can sink a navy that isn’t large enough. But situations change, and when your turn rolls around again, you may regret being unable to attack a nearby zone (maybe a different zone than the one you had originally intended) because you have a whole bunch of TRs with nothing to put on them–don’t trap yourself; retain your flexibility by playing “lean” and only buying as many TRs as you will need…

    • RE: Attacking the german fleet!

I dunno, I’ve had some luck before w/ a T1 attack on Gibraltar w/ 1 BB, 1 TR, 1 SUB and a FTR. The TR lands an ARM on Gibraltar (to be TRd to Africa T2 if all goes well). If the SUB hits, no harm, no foul, but if the British BB gets a counter I take the FTR. Sounds insane, right? But if I take French West Africa and Central Africa, the USA BMR has no place to land, and only the UK BMR can hit me since I took Gibraltar. Now, if they attack I might lose a small ship, but they will lose a BMR. Same holds true for if UK takes Algeria or FWA and USA lands their BMR on it. In both these cases odds are good I can retreat my BB at least T2 and the Allies have lost 1-2 BMRs. Sure I gotta pray I take Egypt, and I lose an extra FTR T1, but my fleet will often hold out.

      Just another crazy idea…

This is sooo right on the mark–new players take note! I have seen many many new players make the mistake with the TRs–don’t build them if you can’t fill them and move them next turn! If you do you are just wasting resources and limiting your options. As Japan I try to never let my INF and TR numbers get out of balance–leftover INF in Japan after a noncombat move are just more wasted resources. Same holds true of USA or UK.

Maintaining a net gain of units each turn is also a must, especially for the poorer countries and ESPECIALLY for USSR and Germany. For instance, try not to use so many tanks in a given attack as USSR that you come up short next turn after Germany counters–you just may have to buy even more. A slow, steady buildup with more limited attacks will net you better
results. Same goes for Germany…and as anyone can tell you, all too often Japan attacks in so many places that in a few turns she has NOTHING left but empty territories and a few INF. This is poor play.

Yes, the Ilyushin 2 was an awesome aircraft–nicknamed the flying tank (much like the American P-47 “Thunderbolt”) because of its ability to take incredible damage and still bring one home–definitely a plus for the pilot…

I, too think ground-attack planes deserve more of the limelight…

      LOL @ Horten…

…BTW: Horten do me a favor–look at your rulebook and tell me what the address is where you can write to get new A & A pieces. I lost my original rulebook (we just use the rulebook for the computer game instead)…and I’m starting to get worried about initial board setup–Germany needs all 10 of it’s original ARM units to make the board look good–I can’t beleive I haven’t lost 1 yet…

    • RE: UK invasion…a not-so-insane strategy

I agree that T1 is too early, but I think the strategy could work well once you can devote 4 INF and a Carrier to the battle, that is T2-3–then you’d have yourself a party! Now whatever the US puts in the water in the Pacific gets sunk by the planes, USA West is in immediate danger of invasion (albeit breifly) and USA must make some difficult choices: leave the Japanese where they are and watch them get stronger and stronger, build a bunch of ARM in West USA to invade, or temporarily abandon the steady buildup of troops to Europe/Africa to march over and respond to the new threat! The only other way would be to use the fleet to sink the Japanese fleet and cut off the Alaskans–except WHOOPS!: the whole fleet is in the Atlantic! Hafta build another one!

Japan moves before USA, so a steady stream of 2-3 INF every turn would reapidly become a major thorn in the Western Allies side. If Japan becomes strong enough to march into Western Canada, the Western Allies could respond–by moving much-needed troops from Europe to help. And Japan can just back them up next turn with more.

A TR bridge could easily develop without compromising Asia, because returning TRs from Alaska could still “bridge” over troops from Japan before departing again next turn laden with more future Alaskans!

The strategy is an eventual loser, of course because the Allies will eventually be able to build up a force to knock you off the continent and Japan can never devote enough resources to trying to stay there to win. But until then Japan has served its purpose well–that is 1.) Harming USSR and 2.) Taking the pressure off Germany from the West. I think this idea is actually a very good one…

      Just my $0.02…

Yes…twin 30mm cannons mounted on the wings. This was a common conversion later in the war for use against Armor on the Eastern Front. I think each cannon could only fire about 20 rounds apeice–'cuz that’s all the Stuka could carry!

    • RE: Just a few simply questions

Yes! In any version of A & A, units that retreat must all retreat back to one territory that one or more units in the attack came from. Many Germany players use this rule to “save” some of the units from Finland-Norway by attacking with everything they’ve got for one round, and then retreating to Eastern Europe. Watch out for the counterrattack, though…

    • RE: Rommel and Hitler

Man, Field Marshal, thanks for the insight on Rommel. This stuff is very interesting…

As far as Rommel being “arrogant”–he was a General. They’re all “arrogant” to the extent that they believe they are going to win and that the thousands of lives in their hands are safe (or at least, well-spent). Look at Montgomery, or especially MacArthur!

You can’t knock Rommel’s acheivements in Africa, you just can’t. The strategy of ALL British Generals there in every campaign of WWII was to mass the HUGEST force they could, with the most overwhelming superiority in numbers and stick it to the Germans. that Rommel was able to survive at all (let alone invade Egypt) is a testament to his genius…

      My 1st choice: Naval-refitted JU-87 “Stuka”

      http://members.tripod.com/EFaust/aircraft.htm

I’m sorry, that is just so cooool…

2nd choice: P-40 “Warhawk”: no frills, just “chug-a-lug”–what can I say, I like the old clunkers!

3rd choice: Me 410 “Hornisse”. Brutal firepower, plus the forward-mounted engines make it look intimidating…

      My picks…

Oh wait! Runner-up would be the Focke-Wulf 190–best Axis fighter of the war, hands-down…

    • RE: Just a few simply questions

Yes: Priority 1 for Germany T1 is wrecking the Allied fleet–especially the 2 UK BBs and the SUB–the FTRs/BMR should be used for this purpose. But regardless of whether Germany wins (which is unlikely T1) you have to still protect Karelia. The Germans may try a major attack using their vastly superior ARM force to hit your INF there, in the hopes of scoring a lot of hits before retreating. They have a slight advantage while they possess such superiority in ARM but only when attacking. As Germany I’ve found this to be a viable option–such spoiling raids can speed up attrition to the point where USSR can be seriously hurt within a few turns, especially if Germany has fair luck with dice rolls, or USSR doesn’t. Best way to defend against this is to strike early as USSR and prevent the Germans from massing large numbers of INF/ARM within striking distance. Another good idea is to place a good-sized force in Caucases (or Ukraine if you own it) so the Germans are forced to split their forces if they choose to attack–bad news for any country.

As far as the naval issue is concerned, I’m confused–Anonymous, please clarify what you are saying. What specific situation are you describing? Where is this battle taking place? What country are you playing? Id the TR mentioned in the same SZ as the BB, or in an adjacent one? What’s up?
