      Yer telling me, TG!

Yanny: what do you do w/ the BMR T1?

Do you attack Egypt T1, or hold off till T2?

Should I ever buy a FTR (I normally don’t but considering the situation I found myself in T1, maybe I should’ve)?

Is there any way to come back in Africa after the Allies have destroyed your fleet?Should you prepare for it by building an extra FTR to put in Africa, as an additional unit? I noticed my biggest baddest problem was the fact I failed to make a dent in Africa (which I usually do)–this became particularly frustrating when I had not been Strategically bombed evn once in the game, and had Industrial Technology and hadn’t even lost Norway, and I still could just barely crank out enough units to keep countering USSR in East Europe & survive…

TG Moses: why buy 10 INF when you could buy 9 INF and an ARM? Are you saving the 2 IPCs for something later? Please gimme your moves!

    • RE: A good Japanese Strategy

UK can choose a time to place their prospective IC when Japan can’t immediately attack and take it all away. Yeah, putting an IC on India when Japan can “throw everything she has” at India and take it is a dumb move–but one that’s easily avoided if you just look at Japan’s current deployment.

    • What do you do as Germany T1?

I definitely need some new ideas…

While with some variation I basically usually do the following:
      Purchase 1 TR or 1 SUB + whatever USSR bought T1 (usually 8 INF)…

On Combat Move, I attack w/ 1 BMR, 2 FTR and 1 SUB (if it lived) from the Baltic against the North Sea zone. I attack the Gibraltar BB with the Atlantic SUB + 1 FTR. I attack the Egypt SUB w/ 2 FTR. I will also blitz Central Africa w/ 1 ARM and attack Egypt w/ it and 1 INF, sometimes I take French West Africa w/ 1 INF. Sometimes I attack USSR, and fade when I lose all my INF, but often I just bulk up. On Non Com I move 2 INF from South Europe to West Europe, land the BMR and all remaining FTRs there or in South Europe if they can’t make it. I TR 1 ARM to Africa, and move the majority of my INF to East Europe along with some of my ARM while holding some in reserve in Germany/Southern Europe. Then I place 1 TR/1 SUB in South Europe, 2 INF in South Europe, the rest in Germany.
The Allies have gotten wise and now USSR attacks usually Eastern Europe and the Atlantic sub T1, but sometimes Ukraine, sometimes the Baltic sea (which only takes 1 plane really anyway…this kills one of my planes straight off the bat and 50%/50% a SUB as well–sorely needed for the fleet attacks. Then on UKs turn the British always land in Africa with forces from Canada/G.B., they attack the fleet w/ a BMR even if its suicide and on USAs turn they also land on Africa–they go straight after the fleet as well, as soon as possible…

The Axis lost our last game, a little because of haphazard play by Japan, but a lot because the Allies (especially USA/USSR) knew exactly what I’d try to do and countered it. We still lost even after I got Industrial Technology and started pumping out 9 INF 3 ARM every turn and was taking NO strategic bombing! All of this (I think) is mainly because I couldn’t take Africa (I failed to take Egypt T1 and lost my fleet T3), and I didn’t do enough damage to the UK fleet T1 because 1 lost a FTR and a SUB to the USSR.
I obviously need a change in tactics to revive my Germany strategy…any ideas? What do you usually do as Germany?

      Ozone27

P.S. My buddies and I play right now with 2nd Edition rules w/ the single exception of Submerging Submarines. There has been some talk of adopting “No Naval Occupation” (that is being able to launch ships in an enemy-controlled SZ), but no change so far. Russia Restricted has been brought up and roundly rejected (as being “unfair”–HAHA!). We draw countries out of a hat so there is usually good experience playing each country…

Yes, you do. But he never says that in his post: he just says he’s “moving more guys from Japan” which I guess means he’s using TRs to move more INF from Japan to the Continent, and placing an “IC on the middle Japanese territory” which must mean Kwangtung province…no placement of troops on a just-purchased IC mentioned…

    • RE: Revising the Strategies for this sight

I think 2 major categories for each country would be best. Call them, “General Principles” and “Strategies” or something like that. General Principles would be like: “To win, Germany must accomplish 3-goals…” . Strategies would be like: “T1, Germany buys this and moves like this…” and so on. I also think new strategies should be reviewed and if they have merit and originality, put up on the site.

I don’t think strategies should be put in “experience level” categories. We all know how that would go down–the strategies that were “high level” would get all the hits while those whose strategies were considered “basic” to “remedial” would feel let down…why put up a “newbie” strategy anyways–no one will read them and if a strategy works it works, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. Know what I mean?

When they invent a naval gun that can accurately shell targets beyond or even at the range and precision of modern jet fighters and cruise missiles, then yeah, the BB may have a comeback. But until then don’t hold your breath…

Regardless of whether it was sabotage or not, hydrogen-filled airships are dangerous to operate and when they crash there are rarely any survivors. The modern Zeps are all filled with Helium with little or no apparent drop in performance…

    • RE: SBR revisited - some new algebra

What if you move the AA gun in Karelia out? I assume you can’t move the gun on your Non Com move the turn you take Karelia (though that’d be cool if you could!), but if Karelia were untenable after a round or 2 you could move the AA gun back to Eastern Europe where it’d do you a lot of good and the Russians none…

Horten is referring to the IPC’s little markings, which refer to each 1 IPC being equal to 1 million man-hours of industrial production. Basically he’s saying (and I agree) that just 'cuz an area is “strategic”, doesn’t necessarily mean it should have a higher IPC value.

YEEAAHH Zeppelins ROCK! I have been following their resurgence closely–they’re hoping to use them to spot mines in formerly war-torn countries: a good use for the former tool of war…

Have you read Wilbur Cross’ book “Zeppelins of WW1”? The story of the Zeppelin crews should be heard…

About BBs–I am not trying to dis them, I’m just stating an unfortunate fact. They are an anachronism. Yes they are the proudest and most intimidating ships on the seas. But while surface ships have been making somewhat of a comeback since the 1980s, due largely–as you mentioned–to the power of the missile and of computerized defense systems, the basic purpose of the battleship, that is, to come to grips with and destroy other battleships (and basically anything else that can’t get away) in tremendous line-of-battle engagements cannot happen on the high seas today. The Carrier Task Force has replaced the old Line of Battle. The big, slow Battleship, no matter how intimidating or well-armored, cannot win in a modern naval battle–sad, but true…

C’mon, T–obviously I am talking about Japan landing an ARM and moving next turn. I know you can’t land an ARM and blitz.

As far as the ARM, they often do just as much good in Novosibirsk as anywhere else. Should Germany take Karelia or Caucases, you can still use them in a counterattack. Plus they are available for operations in China/Manchuria as well…though I agree that Europe comes first–only move armor out of Russia/Karelia when you can really afford it…

Also don’t forget Novosibirsk–a couple of INF stationed there come in very handy on a rainy day! An ARM or 2 there is even handier…

I wasn’t disagreeing with your strategy in Caucases, mainly Horten’s…as far as the far East I try to maintain a flow of 1 INF per turn to there if possible.

I agree that Yakut is more defendible and therefore more important, but leaving SFE totally empty makes it too easy for Japan to take it with no losses or Sea-movement by landing an ARM in Manchuria and blitzing it–while attacking Yakut at the same time…however 1 INF will do for this purpose if you want…

    • RE: Did you ever play alone?

Basically every unit (army or navy) has an attack/defense value of one, which means any two units moving into the same space cancel each other out. The only way you win is by supporting your own units’, or other players’ units’ moves. Therefore 1 unit moving into a territory of another, with the support of a 3rd adjacent unit, will win if the second unit is unsupported.

The kicker is that all moves are simultaneous, and you can never know what another player is actually planning to do until everyone moves. So your “ally” could be faithfully supporting your moves–or stabbing you in the back by helping himself or someone else, or moving in where you vacate, or just sitting back and letting you fail. That’s where the “Diplomacy” comes in…

TG is right about the numbers–we usually play “Diplomacy” when there are too many prople for an A & A game, sice “D” works best with 6-7 people. The secret alliances/ententes/grudges are best with these numbers…

    • RE: Attacking the german fleet!

But the principle remains the same: nobody builds Battleships anymore because the cost greatly outweighs the usefulness. A BB can destroy targets up to 20 miles away. A Carrier can destroy targets hundreds of miles away. A BB will be sunk long before it even approaches to within striking distance of a Carrier.

The only time I know when a Carrier was sunk by a battleship (or battlecruiser in this case) was during the Norway operations when Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sunk a British Carrier. This was in a severe squall when the Carrier could not launch its planes and had poor reconnaissance as well, as a result.
This is the only incident I can think of.

The game reflects this historical fact by having the advantage of range and firepower be with the 2 FTRs on a fully laden Carrier. W/ 2-hit BBs this is not necessarily the case, so I disagree with it on an histroical level.

    • RE: Russian Strategies on this site

I’d leave more than just 1 INF in Caucases–1 INF makes it too easy for Germany to take with a minimum of losses in the counterattack–you want 'em to hafta put a few units in there so you can destroy them next turn: make 'em think twice. Also, don’t leave Soviet Far East totally unoccupied-leave at least an INF or 2 there. Same reason more or less…

      Otherwise, do what Horten says…

I’m sorry, TG, buddy, but you keep bringing up this “oil” thing–the vast oil resources of the Middle East were just beginning to be discovered in the early 1940s. The main world sources of crude oil were still in the “traditional” areas of Eastern Europe (i.e. Russia) and the East Indies. You can’t argue that Libya should be worth 3 points because of oil when Caucases was producing hundreds of times Libyas yield in 1942! The Middle East was considered then to be nothing more than an arid wasteland devoid of economic value…
