      @Razor:

      @ossel:

      “A commander is created if a territory is seized which contains a victory city or a major industrial complex.”

      I guess one of the FAQs will be if you get one more general for every time you trade France, in the ex. US liberate France this turn, Germany retake it next turn, and so on and so forth etc.

      My system is definitely not the kind of KISS rule that you’re looking for, but I would say a simplified form of what I came up with is:

      “A general may not be created (promoted?) from a battle where an existing general influenced the rolls.”

      So basically, if there is a general already there, you can’t make a new one.

      I think a simple requirement like:

      “A commander is created if a territory is seized which contains a victory city or a major industrial complex.”

      might be appropriate. This sort of rewards the player for a major accomplishment, and the number of generals created will be a reasonable number.

      Unique Pieces- They’ve had unique pieces for every country in every A&A game since 1999.  What the hell what this all about?  They really mailed this one in.

      Let me also comment on this point, and note that my anger here is directed at WOTC and Larry, whomever is responsible for this debacle.

      I am absolutely confounded as to how this game made it out of the gate in its current state. Every time I open up my Global 1940 games, I’m dumbfounded as to how these games are only $75, and they include many more pieces (quantity) and many different types of pieces (many of them new to G40) and much higher QUALITY pieces (look at the arty pieces in 1914 and 1940 and you’ll see what I mean).

      I mean, 1914 retails for 100 freaking dollars and not only does it not have unique sculpts, but it barely comes with enough pieces to play the freaking game!!

      And if they weren’t planning a second edition as some have suggested (which I tend to believe since it is the centenary and no announcements have been made) then they should have freaking put some freaking unique sculpts in the box for 100 freaking dollars.  :x

    • RE: 2nd Edition Wish List

      I appreciate the original post. It was very concise and wrapped up much of what others have been suggesting all over this board.

      I have to say, however, that the responses to this post were disappointing. Allow me throw in my two cents on all posts regarding “fixing” or “balancing” AA1914. I’m not trying to be negative in this post, but I want to give an honest critique of some of the posts I see on here that call for drastic changes to this or that aspect of the game.

      First of all, when I open up a thread and it starts with a yards-long wall of text regarding adding cavalry/gas attacks/railroads/zeppelins/telegrams/supply lines/Mexico/etc./etc./etc., I can’t close the thread fast enough. I, like others, think that the game in its OOB state is not complete. I like tweaks to add realism here and there, but doing a massive overhaul of the rules so that it simulates EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the war is inane. This is a high level strategy game. It is not a perfect war simulation. I’m in favor of the added tournament rules, because they add things like rail movement without having to draw little ladder lines all over the board.

      In the introduction of the rules, Larry says explicitly that he’s not trying to represent machine guns and gas attacks in the game, those things are low level aspects. Other things like cavalry and zeppelins had no measurable impact on the war, so it makes sense that these things are not represented.

      Just take a step back, people. The reality is that no one is going to want to play with house rules that require a law degree to master.

      Again, I agree with OP in that we need changes that are realistic to a reasonable degree (correct map, etc.), but we can’t hope for a perfect simulation.

    • RE: Russia escalates things

      @Gargantua:

      To be honest, Syria isn’t american Business.

      Neither is Ukraine.

      As for the Russian invasion.  Thats a Ukrainian problem.

      Here’s the bottom line.   Russia wouldn’t be invading if the Ukrainians managed their government responsibly, ethically, and morally.

      Instead, for decades, Ukrainian leadership has been busy lining its own pockets, and screwing the little people, who time and time again, elect the same corrupt leadership.

      Then instead of helping, the whole world is in the Ukraine looking to get a slice of the action, an ear to the power, and a finger on the strings.

      USA, Russia, england, Europe, africa, Asia, it Doesnt matter.  Its all bad for Ukraine.  The best move is not to play.

      Normally, I don’t go in for all the dredging up of WWII politics to make a point, but I have to say, you sound like Neville Chamberlain.

      I think the question must be asked: If we do nothing now in order to preserve peace, what will we have to do in a few years when Putin thinks he can flex his muscle elsewhere?

      That being said, I think people are forgetting that the U.S. and Russia still have thousands of nuclear weapons pointing at each other, even if they are less inclined to use them as they were in the Cold War. I don’t really think military action is the best possible option, but it would be a major geopolitical blunder here to just sit back and let Russia violate another nation’s sovereignty.

    • RE: Generals for AA games

      In the thread I linked previously, I talk about how I generate them in my house rules. I have a list of conditions that must be met, for instance, if a territory is captured that contains a IC or naval or air base, you would roll to create an officer of a certain rank.

      Well, we have treaty obligations. If Ukraine falls or is allowed to be divided by military action, how long before NATO countries like Poland and Hungary feel Russia breathing down their neck?

      I mean, I don’t think the media is giving this one the attention it is due…of course, it is Oscar season  :roll:

      Think about how the dominoes fall in this situation.

      Russia invades Crimea.

      The U.S. and the E.U. can’t really sit by and let that happen now that they’ve warned the Russians that there would be “grave consequences” for any violation of Ukraine sovereignty.

      We send troops into Ukraine to protect further incursions.

      WWIII.

      I honestly don’t think that a U.S.-China war is really feasible; we’re too economically dependent on each other. Both of our economies would basically collapse.

      This whole Ukraine thing sort of reminds me of WWI to be honest. Russia sees it as within their sphere of influence, Europe is trying to gain a foothold, and the U.S. has an obligation to Europe if they go to war because of NATO.

      I definitely will. Here’s an in-progress preview. It’s a rather large file, so I’ve made it public on my Google Drive. Let me know if you can’t access it.

      I’m still working out some of the colors, and some of the roundel blocks look rough to me close up, but this is the general feel I’m going for.

      Better still, watch the ZDF doc currently showing on Quest instead - much more intelligent and informative.

      Flash, is there a way to stream Quest shows somewhere online? I’m stuck in the U.S., where all the channels that used to show documentaries (“History”, The “Learning” Channel, I’m looking at you) now exclusively air in-depth looks at trailer-trash child beauty pageant contestants and MYSTERIES OF THE BIBLE……on the HISTORY CHANNEL…I just can’t shake my head hard enough…

      I’ve played a few games with these rules and I think they add some flavor without being too too complicated.

    • RE: The American Front: An Alternate History Map For A&A 1914

      @Chacmool:

      Looks great ! I cant wait to see the whole map (will it include also Western USA?)

      How Do you do make those textures and styles of the OOB map?

      I have a (german) map of the OOB (except I made Switzerland  and Western Germany larger)

      Would be cool it If you could help me a little bit with the design…

      Glad you like it! Yes, it’ll be the entire US, with part of Mexico and Canada shown as well.

      So I’m actually using AutoCAD to do the design, but I’m sure you could accomplish similar results with a program that’s not $1000 per copy…

      I found some hi-res marble textures for the territories and colorized them to match the OOB board colors. I might be able to post the images here or host them elsewhere and link to them, let me look into that.

      Once I have the textures how I like them, I “hatch” or fill in the borders with the texture. The trick is to scale the texture so that it doesn’t tile.

    • RE: The American Front: An Alternate History Map For A&A 1914

      Here are some early screenshots of how I’m designing the map.

      I’m doing my best to mimic the textures and styles of the OOB 1914 map. The red circles you see in the first pic represent the unit chips, so that’ll give you an idea of scale. I think right now the map is looking like it’s going to be 48"x36", just showing North America.

      As always, I welcome any input/suggestions.
