    • RE: Nation- (and City-) Specific Victory City Markers

      CWO Marc,
I definitely like this idea, and the benefit of it is that there are only a few nations in the game with multiple victory cities. So here’s the nations that need markers and possible generic/specific landmarks/icons/buildings:

      United States - ??
Soviet Union - Sickle and Hammer Statue??
      Germany - Nazi Eagle statue?
      United Kingdom - ??
      Japan - Torii?
      ANZAC - ??

Or, I can just proceed as planned with landmarks, recognizing that people won’t necessarily know what they’re looking at at first.

OR, I can do molded roundels (see attached).

Here’s Honolulu attempt #2 - just a focus on Pearl Harbor itself with Battleship Row clearly visible.

      Thoughts?

    • USW Rethink

So I know there have probably been a myriad of threads and posts on this topic, but after looking into how Unrestricted Submarine Warfare (USW) was actually used in the war, I had an idea that would make it both historically accurate and viable for Germany to attempt.

In the war, the Germans declared USW as a gamble. They knew they were hurting British trade and discouraging neutral nations (read: the US) from trading with them. Their chief concern was of course the fact that the US might be brought into the war, but to some senior members of the German command, this was worth the risk if it hurt Britain sufficiently.

I think this risk should be represented in the rule. Here’s my revised text:

      Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
The German player can declare that he or she will begin unrestricted submarine warfare at any time during the game. Once
this is declared, Germany will conduct submarine attacks against both the United States’ and the British Empire’s shipping
routes during their respective Collect Income phases. On each of these powers’ turns, the Germany player will roll 1 die for
each German submarine in sea zones 2, 7, and/or 8. For each roll of 1-5, the attacked power will deduct this number of IPC’s from the income it collects during this phase. If a 6 is rolled (on either the U.S.'s or Britain’s turn), the United States will immediately enter the war on the side of the Allies.

I think this change makes USW tempting enough for the Germans to want to try (it is certainly NOT tempting now) and gives a realistic impression of the risk associated with the move.

    • East Coast Events?

      Hey Guys,
Just wondering, are there any events throughout the year that are east of the Appalachian Mountains (and preferably south of the Mason-Dixon)?

The closest one I see is Tennessee, and that’s still a bit of a haul for me, but I’d love to make the trek to one of these things one day.

      @Nobel:

Ossel, These look great! I think Tokyo is perfect. To me the most important thing is whether or not it improves game play and removes confusion. If I saw that piece, I’d instantly know which city it represents.

I can’t say the same thing for Honolulu. I kinda like having each city represented by the most iconic building over a landscape, but I can see why you went with this as there really aren’t a lot of iconic structures.

This is sort of my hangup with the “non-capital” cities in general…it seems like there are going to be very few people who recognize many of them at a glance.

I’ll give the Battleship Row concept a stab, but I’m starting to think maybe the molded roundels idea isn’t the worst. We’ll see.

Ok, so maybe I can blow up Pearl Harbor (bad choice of words…) a little bit and add some little representative battle ships.

If that doesn’t look right, I can just make Pearl Harbor the central feature of the piece and really detail Ford Island and Battleship Row.

      Here’s Honolulu.

I’d appreciate some feedback on this one, it’s sort of a different concept than the other pieces. Any suggestions are welcome.

      As promised….

      TOKYO!  :-D

I ended up going with the idea of just showing the Meiji Shrine, and I like the simplicity and cleanness of it.

What do you guys think? Should there be another building in there?

      MOSCOW MONDAY!

      Beautiful!

      Next is Tokyo Tuesday! <<

To be followed by Warsaw Wednesday?  (Just kidding…)

I thought about that, but it sort of breaks down after Wednesday lol! I’m out of “T”'s and I don’t work on these on the weekend!

In all seriousness, I’ll probably do Honolulu after Tokyo. I’m anxious to try out my Oahu coast concept.

      @jwo1984:

……any rough idea as too when you might produce/ offer these for sale??

      Thanks for your interest!

So here’s my production plan right now. Obviously I have to finish the design work first, and I’m currently cranking out a single design in 1-2 days. I’m uploading to Shapeways as I go to check for manufacturablity, and right now everything looks good.  I also want to order my own set to check the quality and so I can provide pictures of the printed product on the sales pages. So, I would think a conservative estimate is that they would be ready to sell in about a month or so.

I want to see if I can sell complete sets as well (to possibly save cost and for added convenience), perhaps a Global set and a smaller set for different editions (perhaps a 1914 set eventually?), but I have to see if this is possible through the site.

Again, thanks to everyone for the interest and feedback! It is very much appreciated!

      WOW! :-o

A lot of great research here! You’ve certainly saved me a lot of work.

First of all, I’d like to say that I agree with you on not doing the generic molded roundel versions (although that may be an alternative, possibly lower cost option that I can offer later). I feel like if you’re going to spend the money on the markers, they might as well be unique.

      A couple of comments:

Stalingrad - I’d like to stick to buildings if possible, for two reasons.

      1. Comparative scales: the other markers are buildings, so I think the smaller statues might seem out of place.
      2. Organic shapes (i.e. people) are much harder to model in my program than structural shapes.
What about a distinctive building like the “Univermag Department Store” building that the Germans used as an HQ during the battle (see attached)? I seem to remember something like this in “Enemy at the Gates”.

I suppose I can give the statues a stab, we’ll see.

Honolulu - I had a cool idea for this one, maybe modeling the whole southern coast of Oahu, complete with Diamond Head on one side, a little Waikiki Beach with downtown Honolulu, and the outline of Pearl Harbor on the other side. I’ll have to see if I can fit it all, but I think it would be cool.

Tokyo - I might end up doing something like D.C., with Edo Castle on one side and the Meiji Shrine on the other. Again, I’ll have to see how it looks. I like the capital markers to be a bit more stately and impressive.

Other than that, I loved all you guys’ suggestions. I’ll keep working on these next week.

      Coming up…
      MOSCOW!

I offered, but didn’t get any feedback. It might be an option in the future, but for now I’m going to sell them on my own.

    • RE: Nation- (and City-) Specific Victory City Markers

      @John:

Ossel, will these pieces be different colors or just gray?

      Thanks,

      John

Shapeways offers many different options (with different prices as well). Right now it looks like the (plastic) options are:
      White
      Black
      Grey (“Alumide”, so metallic grey)
      Blue
      Purple
      Red
      Pink

So, if you’re looking for faction-specific colors, the answer to your question is, no, the options are a bit more limited.

Metals are also an option (at a much higher price) as someone mentioned before.

      Paul,
        That’s definitely an option.

Heck, if you wanted to get the Victory City Marker Set “Donald Trump Edition”, you could drop $480 each for 14K gold!

I used this article with some newbies I introduced to G40 recently. We ended up playing G42, which I felt was a little quicker paced and easy to understand for someone new to the game.
