      Well, to be fair, if you guys could have just beat Fritz on your own, there’d be no reason for us to have to cross the Atlantic in the first place…. :evil:

      What colour is “plum” exactly? I’ve eaten plums in lots of colours.

      Won’t the French blue to too light for 1914 units?

      I’m assuming that they’ll cast them in multiple colors, as they have with their others. And, once they react to the desire in the community for more WWI sculpts, I imagine it will be all too easy to crank out a set of these for the new game, since they have the mold and everything.

      I really would just like to see Renault FT’s. The Mark V was the “first,” but the FT was the first true modern tank; they were used by all the Allies, and were even still around at the beginning of WWII.

      FYI, just found out HBG is designing a French early war set that will have Renault FT’s….definitely getting some for my French and American armies.

      @Flashman:

      Can attacking ships retreat from a naval battle, or do they stay in what is now a contested SZ when they break off the attack?

      There is no such thing as a ‘contested seazone,’ as naval battles are resolved in the traditional A&A style:

      Unlike a land battle, a sea battle can go on for multiple rounds of combat for as long as the attacker wants to continue.

      So I’m thinking the answer is yes, they can retreat.

      @Flashman:

      Can ships be built in Berlin even though, I think, it does not have a naval base?

      I imagine he’ll either put a fictitious naval base in the Berlin tt, or put it in Kiel.

      @Flashman:

      What happens to mines adjacent to a naval base that is captured, or whose original owner is knocked out of the game?

      I’m pretty sure the mines stay active, and “attack” any unit that’s an enemy to the original controlling power:

      …all sea zones with a naval base symbol are considered mined by the power originally controlling the navy base…

      @Flashman:

      Are the Allies permitted to invade non-aligned neutrals? I foresee big problems for the CP if they can, particularly in regard to Persia and Norway being used to feed U.K. units into Russia (I assume the western Allies are allowed on Russian soil).

      I have to assume strict neutrals behave like they did in Global 1940, basically turning all neutrals against the invading alliance.

      @Flashman:

      But in reality the AEF only made an impact in Europe in the Summer of 1918. It took them a long time to organize an army, ship it to France, equip it with British and French weaponry, and train it in modern warfare.

      In addition, General Pershing insisted that they only fight in American army divisions; he wasn’t having them just reinforce the Allied positions under foreign command.

      Its also totally unfair that America can build an army without the slightest chance for the CPs to attack it. Right up 'till early 1917, America was firmly isolationist and had no intention of spending money on a modern army.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Expeditionary_Forces

      Let’s not forget, however, that America had just fought a multi-theatre war against Spain not 20 years before, and intervened in the Mexican Revolution earlier that year. The idea that they were a completely backwards, non-modern power is a bit of an overstatement.

      True, by 1917 they hadn’t had the experience of 3 years of brutal modern combat that the Brits and the French had, and they certainly didn’t want to switch their heavy industry over to tank and weaponry production, but by the early 20th century, America was definitely a world player.

      @Flashman:

      You don’t even need Askaris in national colours - just use some black German WWII infantry (you’ve got lots of them, right?)

      I like Pacific 1940 Chinese a little better, they’ve got the whole “kepi” look going on….granted, not as many people will have those compared to the old Krauts.

      @CWO:

      @wove100:

      Unfortunately, from the 3D map rendering in David Jansen’s article on the homepage, it looks like only the infantry sculpts are unique. Since this is only a 3D rendering and not the actual board and pieces there remains a little sliver of hope, but most of us are reconciled to only the infantry sculpts being unique.

      I sure hope that there’s more sculpt variety too, and I agree that there’s still some hope that this will be the case.  The WotC sales flyer…

      http://www.wizards.com/ContentResources/Wizards/Sales/Solicitations/2012_12_19_AA1914_Solicitation_en_US.pdf

      …says “22 all-new unit sculpts are included”.  The individual infantry sculpts for Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, France, the British Empire, the Russian Empire, Italy and the United States account for 8 of those sculpts, leaving 14 sculpts for the equipment.

      This post from Larry…

      http://www.harrisgamedesign.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10635&start=8

      …lists the following equipment pieces (in addition to the infantry units): artillery, tanks, fighters, submarines, battleships, cruisers, transports.  That adds up to 7 equipment categories.  Since 2 x 7 = 14, and since (as noted above) 22 - 8 = 14, we could reasonably expect that the Central Powers and the Allied Powers each have a distinctive set of 7 equipment sculpts, if we go by the info in the sales flyer.  The 3D picture which Djensen posted seems to suggest otherwise, however.  So it would appear that either the sales flyer is misleading or that the 3D picture is misleading.  I guess we’ll know more when Djensen gets his actual preview copy of the game.

      Well, the sliver has grown to a ray…thanks for doing the math CWO Marc! :-D

      Speaking of the production chart, has it been confirmed how it works? It looks like a “10’s scale/1’s scale” type thing.

      Yeah, that’s the only weakness with the “recruit at capitals” rule: if Britain is able to lock down the North Sea, there’ll be absolutely no way Germany can reinforce Africa.

      I might suggest, instead of imposing a cap on the number of native troops nations can recruit, make it so a “regular” land unit must be present in order to place these units (implying they’re doing the training, etc.).

      Yeah, about the Production Bonus - I hope it’s not real, cause it seems so unfair! I’ve always hated that bonus.  :x
      But, oh, nevermind.
      Also, it has been confirmed (I think, haha) that there are no NOs, and isn’t the US bonus usually an NO?

      Not to mention that there’s really no historical context for it. Even when they entered the war, the only thing the Americans contributed was manpower; they had to borrow tanks and machine guns from the French.

      @vonLettowVorbeck1914:

      Am I the only one seeing $100 MSRP as too much for this? In total this looks to be right about 1942 levels. 12 inf for each power?

      When you consider this is pretty much a 100 year anniversary commemorative game of WWI you’re paying a dollar per year (not so bad LOL).

      It just seems like WOTC should know what people expect by now…and if they wanted to do a sort of introductory WWI game with generic sculpts, they should only charge $50-$60 for it.

      @ossel:

      Looks awesome, thanks for the update! :-D

      I am a little disappointed by the lack of variety in the sculpts, though. I expected the CP to at least have different tank and plane sculpts than the Allies. In fact, I’m almost certain I read somewhere that that was the case. Oh well, that was only a rendering and we’ll see soon enough!

      Here’s what I was thinking of (from Harris Game Design:

      Question: Are the sculpts all the same except infantry, or you got two sets of sculpts one for allies and one for central powers?
      Larry: Each major power (eight of them) have their own infantry sculpts. Other sculpts are either allied or Central Power’s artillery, tanks or fight aircraft… and of course the naval lineup.

      That wording seems to imply the Central Powers have their own sculpts…but then again, this is from several months ago.

      @Flashman:

      Like the tanks, but the artillery and planes look very small and fiddly.

      I can maybe use artillery from Attack!, but I know of no source for alternative aircraft pieces of a suitable scale & appearance.

      Apart from some of the other new games coming out…

      About what scale should the planes be?

      @Hitlers:

      @Flashman:

      So I think I can assume that there is a sea passage around the north.

      Russia gets weirder every time I look at it.

      Petrograd is now in Livonia!

      Karelia is now in Finland, despite the fact that there’s another tt called Karelia with a naval base at Archangel!

      Looks like Egypt is the only tt in Africa worth more than 1, which is fair enough, but one wonders why the continent was included at all.

      Paris is practically in the Atlantic.

      I wonder why SZ 19 wasn’t extended to the western end of Egypt.

      Why does the German flag have an iron cross on it - none of the other flags are defaced?

      The German flag is their War flag so it is historical

      http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/SMS_Kaiser_parade_1913-14.jpg

      That’s the naval jack…so…technically Flashman is right, although I prefer the flag with the iron cross.

      @Flashman:

      Quick map update - tell me if you spot anything I haven’t.

      Major weirdness in Northern Russia! No north Passage? Is Finland even a tt?

      Baltic Sea just one SZ!

      You can’t sail from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Guinea!

      Looks like they had to shave the edges off the map to get in in the box!

      Yeah, I’m not sure if this is the actual board. If you look at the right hand side, you can see the SZ labels are sort of folded over the edge. Hmm…

      If someone wants to be a super sleuth, they can figure out a diameter for the unit chips, use that to determine scale, and then see if the board is the stated dimensions (36" x 36", I think).

      So…I guess besides infantry, all the sculpts are the same…anyone a little disappointed?  :-(

      Buy hey, look on the bright side, if we follow the current trend, A&A 1914 Revised (with custom sculpts for each nation) will come out in…

      2033!!!  :-o
