    • RE: Prewar/Conscript Infantry

Good post. I guess I was more referring to the fact that the training and equipment of “prewar” units would be generally inferior to those of a nation that had experience fighting modern, WWII armies.

For instance, the U.S. army wasn’t fully equipped with M1 Garand rifles until the end of '41, and the famous M1 helmet didn’t even start being issued until then. Tactics were based on flawed doctrine as well.

In the Soviet case, the Red Army was soundly defeated in the first few weeks of the war, due to poor organization, incomplete mobilization, and mediocre officers.

The idea of “conscript” more came to me as a way to represent the mass of poorly trained, poorly equipped draftees Stalin threw into battle as the war became more desperate.

I know that, in reality, these concepts are completely different, but statwise, the two groups should be similar.

    • Prewar/Conscript Infantry

      Hi All,

First time posting here in a while. I just wanted to share with you guys some thoughts I had for various rule changes I’m trying with A&A G40. I’ll be creating a couple of threads here shortly.

My first idea is the use of a new unit, the “Prewar” or “Conscript” infantry. These represent raw, untested troops that are in general weaker than normal infantry.

The basic idea for prewar infantry is to use them in place of infantry in the setups of countries who aren’t at war (namely, the U.S. and Soviet Union). I use 1914 pieces to represent them in my game, and the US doughboy pieces with their flat helmets really give a great feel to the standing armies on the map, not to mention the Russian rifle infantry with their peaked caps and blanket rolls.

I’m also playing around with the idea of allowing Russia to buy these units at a cost of 1 or 2 later in the game (perhaps when they have 2 original TT’s occupied).

In my D12 game, I bump the attack and defense values down by 1 (to Atk 1, Def 3), but you could easily just bump the Defense value down to 1 in a D6 game.

      Thoughts?

    • RE: Nation- (and City-) Specific Victory City Markers

Hello All! Things have been fairly busy in my life lately; I usually model these pieces in my down time at work, and frankly there hasn’t been any!

That being said, I’m going to try and knock out the rest of these, as I am anxious to get them out to you guys (and admittedly I want a set for myself as well :-D).

As a reward for your patience, I give you…SHANGHAI!!

Thanks to all of you for your continued support and encouragement. I couldn’t even have gotten as far as I have without your interest and input.

    • RE: The Worlds Wars Mini Series

Saw the first episode, it was decent, but as some have pointed out, there were glaring issues. I facepalmed hard when Patton was aiming his Enfield rifle…in Mexico…

I also thought the Batman-esque “origin story” for Hitler’s mustache was a bit comical.

Overall an interesting series though. It’s good to see the History Channel showing actual history, as opposed to Pawn Stars and Mysteries of the Bible

      Ok, here’s Warsaw!

I ended up using the Carmelite Church of Warsaw as CWO Marc suggested (as seen here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Warszawa_kościół_pokarmelicki.jpg).

Just an update, I’ve been hard at work on the next marker, but unfortunately/fortunately my actual work work has gotten busier too, so I haven’t been able to produce at quite the rate I was before. I am still chipping away, and I hope to have another one to share with you guys this afternoon!

Thanks again for the input guys.

      Just an update:
I have been working with Shapeways on the subject of manufacturability lately, and specifically the subject that Tall Paul is referring to. The problem I’m having is that some materials (some that people might want, like gray plastic or steel) have different “smallest feature” values, so are giving me errors on upload. I need to figure out if these errors are going to be a problem in production. I’ve thought of maybe increasing the overall scale of the cities, but this doesn’t seem to be fixing it. I’ll keep everyone updated as I figure things out.

Right now, I’m munching on some sourdough for some inspiration for my next piece…

No, this is simply where I my mouse had passed over those features as I was taking the screenshot  :-D

      Shouldn’t affect anything.

      STALINGRAD

Had some trouble with Shapeways on this one, so it took me a couple of uploads to get it right, but let me know what you guys think.

Haha, I knew someone would point that out. Yeah, I’ve seen them, but I decided to limit my collection to playable powers (for now  :-P )

CWO Marc, awesome work! These are all great suggestions and I can already see how I will model them, which is a plus.

I hope to have Stalingrad worked up later on today, and then I thought I’d swing back stateside and take a stab at the Golden Gate Bridge!  :-D

    • RE: Still Playin?

In my opinion, the tournament rules are an absolute must for playing this game. The two-space move adds realism and fluidity to the game, and the economic/political collapse rules give players an actual reachable goal for taking out a country, as opposed to driving straight for capitals.

I heartily hope that if there is a second edition of this game, these rules become OOB.

Just an update, found some really good shots of that tower next to Barmaley Fountain in Stalingrad (Volgograd). It’s still standing! You can see it in street view on Google Maps. Think I’m going to use that as inspiration for the piece, and probably knock it out today.

    • RE: Timed turns

I think using timed turns might be good, simply to reduce the “thinking time” people feel like they have. I played a game with some newbies recently, and the U.S. player formulated his entire long-term Pacific strategy before he had even moved a piece. His turn took and hour and a half, and we got to turn 4… So yeah, if anything encouraging players to limit strategizing in favor of action is a good thing.

I like the Fort Drum suggestion!

So…I figured I’d crank out Cairo real quick since it is undoubtedly the simplest, but once I got done with the pyramids, my obsession with detail got the better of me, and I’ve admittedly spent all day struggling with modeling the Sphinx…

Unfortunately, it ended up defeating me, so here is the very simple, yet effective, Cairo.

This would probably work for Stalingrad, good find!

I’m reworking Honolulu now, and then I think I’m going to give Stalingrad a swing.

I’ll look at the Chinese lion concept, but they’re awfully…curvy…lol

    • RE: Star Wars Lives!

Yeah, I’m one of those in the minority that still admits that I liked the prequels when they came out. I was 12 when Episode I debuted, so of course the slapstick Jar Jar and the lightning-fast lightsaber battles entertained me.

Looking back, of course the acting and directing was terrible, but at the time I loved those movies. And that’s what George Lucas was trying to do, so I don’t fault him too much.

I’m not really sure about JJ, not a huge classic Trek fan, so I enjoyed the 09 version for what it was but I can understand how some people would be upset ("Hey, you know everything that happened in the old show?? TIME WARP!!).

My worry with JJ is his tendency to work with his talentless writing buddy, Damon Lindelof (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0511541/?ref_=nv_sr_1).

If you haven’t heard of him, he’s responsible for such travesties as the ending of Lost, Prometheus, the ending of World War Z, and yes, Star Trek Into Darkness. He is my celebrity arch-enemy, and I hope they don’t let him within the same area code as the Star Wars script.
