I know! This was a good poll. I’m suprised the 262 did as well as it did. I can take comfort in the fact that the spitfire got as many votes as it did. I still think the Mosquito and the Fock Wulf are underrated.

RE: What the Heck is Overwatch?posted in Miniatures (Original)
Sorry, another question though. If a unit is placed on overwatch (example, a german mg,42 team) do they only get overwatch on the one row they are facing or does it apply to anyone in moving into hexes they can fire on.

RE: What the Heck is Overwatch?posted in Miniatures (Original)
You have to use that units action to take it out of overwatch. Hope this helps.
Does this mean if a unit is on overwatch, it takes their entire next turn to get out of overwatch?

RE: Favorite WW2 Fighter Planeposted in World War II History
Speaking of fighters, anyone have a plane they’re using in the game they are especially fond of? I personally love using the Stuka to take out Russian tanks that pose the most serious threat.
I still need to get a 109 or Fock Wulf however. I’ve only got that and the Dornier so far and we rarely play 1945 battles. Besides, how much action did that plane really see? I like our battles to be as historically correct as possible and I’m sorry I bought it. I should have bought a plane that was actually more commonly used. I really want the 109 ace.

RE: Favorite WW2 Fighter Planeposted in World War II History
I agree with Imperious. The Stukas probably sustained much higher losses as the fighters were not ordered to protect them in full squadrons as they were with the 111’s

Clap clap (so the germans lost more aircraft)
That was my guess but so… many bombersYeah, you can attibute most of those losses to the bf110 and probably the stuka along with the HE-111 (God I love that bomber). The 110 probably took the most losses is my guess. That plane was outdated very soon after it’s introduction and was reffered to as “meat on the table” along with other various twin engine bombers encountered.

RE: Fixed turretposted in Miniatures (Original)
ok I have a question. Can a fixed turret make defensive fire like a normal tank? For example if a unit moves into an adjacent hex that’s not directly in front of the turret? We’ve been playing yes because most of the time those tanks have additional machine guns either inside or on top of the tank and since it’s only disruption, we play the tank can respond to enemy movement. I would love clarification however.

RE: What the Heck is Overwatch?posted in Miniatures (Original)
overwatch is a play on defensive fire. during your movement or attack phase, you can declare that you are placing a unit in over watch which counts as the units action for that phase. What does this mean? When the unit is put into overwatch, the turrent or facing of the unit determines what hex row is in overwatch. Overwatch only applies to the row of hexes that the turrent is facing (both fixed guns and turreted) as far as the range of that particular unit. If an enemy unit moves through that hex row, the unit in overwatch can perform a defensive fire attack if it has line of sight to the enemy unit. For example, if you have a german 88 flak gun in overwatch and an enemy tank moves through the hex row in overwatch, the 88 can defensive fire with appropriate ranged AT value. Also, in the new rules, defensive fire can damage or destroy instead of only disrupting. Be careful with overwatch though, units in overwatch can not move until they are taken out of overwatch and they can only attack units that move through the hex row in overwatch. If you move first and place a unit in overwatch and your opponent moves units so they can attack the unit in overwatch, you can not move are attack the units in your attack phase. You have to use that units action to take it out of overwatch. Hope this helps.
Nice explanation. I always wondered about this. Thanks!

The Imperious leader settles all with one crushing blow. Well done on getting that info for us!

RE: Favorite WW2 Fighter Planeposted in World War II History
@Imperious:
I was quoting for the overall planes shot down, not individual by plane type.
Oh ok. So was I but I was talking about their highest level not overall for the entire battle. I could definately be wrong though.

RE: Favorite WW2 Fighter Planeposted in World War II History
@Imperious:
not 10 to 1, more like 2.5 to 1
better pilots, Radar giving early warning, and bombing in daylight.
Germans should have just sent in fighters to raid airfields and engage fighters. Bombers should have came over only in night.
The loses are mainly bombers and stukas
The highest kill ratio for british fighters in the Battle of Britain is the Hurricane due to it’s job shooting down easy targets like the 110 and Ju-87’s. Not to challenge your imperial knowledge, oh great giver of karma :-) But I believe the British eventually had a 5-1 kill ratio going. This is credited to the brave RAF pilots of both the Hurricane and the Spitfire.
An EXCELLENT book to read is “Spitfires, Thunderbolts and Warm Beer” which are the diaries of Lee Gover, a volunteer spitfire pilot in the battle of Britain. Excellent first hand accounts. He was the only one in his squad to return from the battle at Dieppe.

RE: What if the holocoust never happenedposted in World War II History
As we all know, Hitler ordered in the"final solution" and began to discriminate certain ethnicitys. Millions were killed, I say what if it didn’t happen. What if Hitler had never ordered a “Final Solution” of any kind.
What you think would’ve happened?
Hitler killed 6 million jews, but only very few of this was german jews, most of the jews come from eastern Europe, France and Russia. When Hitler come to power in 1933, he stole the money from rich jews like Rotschild, and some say this money was used to build up his military forces. So if Hitler was not purging and looting the german jews, he would not got all this money at this early time, and the war would be delayed some years.
Lets say 1 million of this jews was german, that would give him 100 000 more soldiers. Not a decesive factor. The rest 5 million jews was foreigners, and would not contribute to the german war effort what so ever.Hitlers war goal was Lebensraum. He wanted to kill all the slaves in eastern Europe, and make a Reich from France to Ural Mountains. If he did not discriminate other ethnic people, this war would never happen. Why would he attack Russia ? Would the common German soldier volunteer to die just to free the russians from Stalin ?
Because of the Versailles Treaty that left 20 % of the german population under foreign rule, and the financial depression with hyper-inflation and large scale un-employment and starvation, some kind of war was expected. Even the Weimar Republic prepared for a war. But without the ethnic factor, the war would likely be limited to just conquer the territories that was lost because of the Versailles Treaty. The Germans, with a soft Hitler or without Hitler, would just conquer Sudetenland and Schlesien, and then want peace. And since this would happen before Churchill come to power, the war would likely stop there.
I agree with some points here. Hitlers wants were far beyond German means under his time frame. Even if the Jews, Slavs, or other “undesirables” were simply deported or used in combat, this would have NO real effect on the war. Germanys failure to take on the long range bomber program of Walter Weaver before his untimely death and Goerrings demmand for MORE aircraft instead of BETTER aircraft left the Allies with air superiority.
In my personal opinion,
1. NO. The Brits would NEVER have surrendered and fought building to building just as the Nazis did.
2. If peace was negotiated with England after territories were taken to satisfy Germany, this would have closed down the wester front. I believe England would have negotiated peace. This would have still led to the war with Russia which had been brewing since the Spanish Civil War. Germany may have had an excellent chance to take Russia if you take all those resources from the western front and put them against the communists. -

@ABWorsham:
I’m surprised the Me-262 has so much love. I thought the winner of this poll would be a plane with a longer combat record.
If your talking about the combat record including confirmed kills for WW2, excluding planes that were used in Korea post war, then the 109 has my vote. On the other hand, in terms of a stone cold killing machine that could withstand a lot of punishment and perform like a bat out of hell, then the P-47 would have my vote as well.

@Krupp:
The 109 e-4 trop is certainly a beautiful plane, I could only imagine having a squadron of those coming towards me… :-o
I know man! Think of being in a B-17f and getting jumped by like 200 hundred of them with no fighter escort. All the way to your target and most of the way back. Those pilots would come at you head on (12 o’clock high) “GREAT movie btw” and sometimes the pilot would be killed or the 109 damaged and they’d just ram right into you. I heard a personal account from another B-17 crew member that saw one crash head on into the Fortress and the spinning engine and propeller came ripping out the tail gunners section still flying for a couple hundred yards.

@Krupp:
I have always liked the look of the Me-109, so sleek looking and powerful. 8-)
I KNOW!!! :-) I LOVE that plane. It’s actually one of my favorite fighters of all time. The 109 e-4 trop. That plane is aweseome!. Seeing footage of those things dive and fly in formation is amazing. Those pilots (in the beginning) were some of the best trained and combat experienced pilots in the world due to their experience in the Spanish Civil War and The Battle of Britain.
I’m suprised that the ME-262 has so many votes! Granted, it was the peak of technology, it had a lot of technical problems. There isn’t a single pilot that would fly that thing these days. I think there’s no flyable ones right now but they’re in the process of remaking one that is safer to fly than the originals.

RE: German Goliath Bombs?posted in Miniatures (Original)
Thanks again! I LOVE fielding this unit. Just got them by mail. They’re almost a little unfair for 1939 but I’m not complaining.
