    • RE: What kind of player are you?

I’d like to start this post with one of my favourite lines by Tim Robbins in Bull Durham. “Man I love winning. You know what I mean … it’s like better than losing.”

I voted no that I have something to prove but I think it’s kind of a grey area.

Good survey. I’d have to say that I am one of those people that can get over losing but occasionally I do throw some dice around and my friends do too. But cooler heads always prevail. For the most part as long as I don’t loose because I did something absolutely stupid (like being invaded by Germany as the UK within the first 3 turns – hasn’t happened yet) then I don’t get mad. My friends and I do get competitive and since some of us are roommates so there are bragging rights involved. This has led to some finger gestures and the occasional bad word but no punches have ever been thrown and we always have a few beers after the game and discuss what went right or wrong for each player.

The dice usually get thrown due to very bad rolls (I guess that is obvious). In fact my friends and I started a Loosers log that we figured would help us learn from our mistakes. We’d put the reasons why we thought we lost. Well after a while this got boring so we decided to keep a dice throwing log. Who threw the dice? Why the dice got thrown? Etc. We always have a good laugh about dice being thrown. Usually only happens once/twice a game. My last entry was; (I was UK)

T1 Germany attacks Egypt with 1 tank, 1 art and 2 inf. 1 hit. Ok here’s my chance to stop or hamper German campaign in Africa.

Defence roll: 1 ftr, 1 tnk and 1 man. 3 SIXES!! Ahhhh! Dice thrown in the laundry room. We laughed about it later.

But I do my best to keep in mind that it is just a game. I always remind myself of one thing. If I get mad when things don’t go my way and kick the board or slap someone … then no one is going to want to play against me and I don’t want that.

    • RE: Prefer playing axis or allies ?

I prefer playing as the allies in this version. I find it to be more of a challenge than the original A&A. My friends and I have played about 6-7 games and the axis have won all the games. So at this point I find the allies are more of a challenge. Plus I find their are more purchase options with the allies. Axis is mostly tanks and men and maybe a CV. Not always of course but usually that’s how it plays out.

Plus for some reason, (I think someone put a voodoo curse on me) I always have the worst luck playing as the axis (especially Germany). My rolls usually suck. Any one else find that they have better dice rolls with one power over the other?

    • Germany and the Middle East

I was recently looking at (and responding to) the thread about what to do with the 12$ at the start of each sides turn. Eventually this thread led to a bit of a dsicussion over what to do with the German fleet in the Med. Some use it to take out destroyer in Gibraltar and others use it for Middle East push. I am relatively new at this game (I’ve played it about a dozen times) and I was wondering what people’s thoughts are concerning the Middle East. Some people say going after middle east oil is a waste of time. So I am just wondering what everyone out there thinks about this. I always try to get the mideast oil because it has an effect of 16$. 8 to germand and 8 away from the allies.

To go or not to go after middle east oil. That is the question. Why? or why not?

    • RE: THe $12 you get to start with!!

I think anyone who doesn’t see the importance of Germany taking Malta on G1 is missing one key point. Let’s say Germany doesn’t attack Malta and the British plane stays. So on the next turn B1 Britain will have a fighter, destroyer, transport and a bomber (which can reach the med. and land in Malta) to use against the BB, DD and Trns of the Germans. So if Germany’s rolls don’t go well then the German fleet in the med. is gone and therefore so is any chance for Germany to get Mid East Oil. Germany could spend some money on building up its fleet in the Med. but Germany cannot afford to take resources away from the Russian front.
