    • RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)

      Okay… per request, here’s pictures of Tjoek’s AA50 OOB map file, printed up…

      Details:
      For various reasons, I went ahead and printed the map at the same size as the original board map (which is 24"x46")… but now I have a one-piece map that I can roll up, and I won’t have anywarpage or “three-pieces-sliding-around” issues.

      I took it to the local Fed-X Print Shop, they recommended Outdoor Banner Vinyl (I asked for measurements, official name and thickness in mm… they looked blankly at me and said “it’s called outdoor banner vinyl, that’s what’s on your receipt”… and indeed it is… so not sure what else to call it other than "outdoor banner vinyl from Fed-X print shop).

      They charge $6.99 (US-Dollar) per square foot and if you go for the default size of 24"x46", that turns out to be 8-sqft… with tax, it was a $60 project grand total. If you want to enlarge it to a bigger size and go through Fed-X, that’s what you can work with for estimates.

      I didn’t do anything fancy like lamination or sticky sides or whatever… it’s a straight up printing with no frills… right now, I just wanted a warp-proof single-piece reproduction of the OOB map for cheap and Tjoek’s map file offers just that. I might do something fancier later for a larger size, but right now, I just wanted a reprint in a single piece that works better for our group (and it does). I got exactly what I want for $60… I think that’s pretty good. I can always make another down the road if I need to.

      Attached are 4 pics for your viewing…

      Pic-1, the vinyl map (with Fasces), straight up…
      Pic-2, the vinyl map with the original board placed over the right and left sides (center piece not placed) to show how exact the vinyl matches the original board on layout.

      I did mention “this may not be the best strategy”, or even which nation this strategy would mostly benefit, but it IS an alternate strategy you can try that is different from the boring same-old, same-old strategies “normal” people do!

      You’re going to need the loaded carriers to protect the Russian battleships and transports for amphibious operations in the Caspian Sea, duh…

      Cut the Canadians some slack… they are living in a land of perpetual cold, ice and tundra… it’s so cold, when they go outside, the only word they can manage to say is “eh?”.

      So when the only thing they can do for entertainment is either use maple syrup to put up wallpaper or sit in their basement and play A&A… they’re probably going to get good at A&A.

    • RE: War and Peace (2012)

      Sorry for being late to the party, but yeah, I have this game, it’s awesome… it literally is Axis and Allies Napoleon… the game designer even mentioned in the back of the rulebook that he played the heck out of Axis and Allies and wanted to make a game based on the system covering a different time period… he first started doing an Axis and Allies Civil War game, but changed it to the Napoleonic wars because it had more major powers (more players) involved… but it has a purchase phase, a combat move, combat resolution (on the combat board), non combat movement, count resources and collect income (sound familiar?).

      The major differences (between A&A and W&P) is that W&P has a diplomatic system where you can sway certain powers to change to neutral and/or flip allegiances (as often happened during the Napoleonic wars). France and Britain are always at war, but Spain, Austria, Prussia and Russia can flip sides. Another difference is the leaders of Wellington and Napoleon are in the game… they act kinda like “combined arms artillery”, in that they increase the firepower of infantry on attack by 1 if led by Napoleon or defense by 1 if led by Wellington.

      It’s an awesome game if you like A&A and/or Napoleonic wars… it also plays a little quicker than A&A… probably around 3 hours for a game, depending on variables of course. I’m not sure if it’s still in-print, it came out in 2012, but you can still find copies on E-Bay as with anything else… the official name of the game is:

      Worthington Games War & Peace (absolutely NOT to be confused with a game of the same name made by Avalon Hill three decades earlier).

    • RE: Basic Russian Opening Strategy

      I wasn’t saying leave one infantry everywhere,  and certainly not on inconsequential fronts… I certainly never championed that… I’m all for pulling back and consolidation… when I mentioned leaving an infantry behind,  I was speaking specifically about Leningrad because you KNOW the Gerns will go there, and because RNG is RNG, there’s always the chance the Germans could get diced, and for Russia,  that’s a gamble I’ll take every time.

    • RE: Axis & Allies and Zombies is REAL

      While I understand what you’re pointing out, I wholeheartedly disagree that it should have been incorporated into the game. Saying the Egypt campaign should be included simply because Napoleon was there before he came to power is like arguing WW1 battles should be included in a WW2 game because Hitler fought in WW1.

      As for the “world wide” conflicts during the Napoleonic wars… sure… some skirmishes occured outside Europe, but once again,  they were so minor and so infrequent, it would be like insisting on playing on a global map for a WW1 game because there was a cruiser battle off the coast of South America… ya, it happened, but that doesn’t justify losing scope on the main theatre of action in Europe.

      If you like Axis and Allies, and/or the Napoleonic wars, War & Peace does a great job of merging the two together into a fun game, focusing on the battles Emperor Napoleon fought in Europe from 1805 to 1815, covering from Spain to Russia… which was my whole point of suggesting a different version/take of Axis and Allies, even if it doesn’t have the official name tag…

      I disagree that the game just isn’t worth the effort because a Frenchman stubbed his toe on an Englishman’s carriage in the Caribbean where some obscenities were said, and that means the game should have had a global map. I think the game is plenty fun focusing on the real battles in Europe… a global map would have lost a ton of focus for the gain of incredibly minor sideshows.

      My 2-cents… your mileage will vary.

      @Tjoek:

      I would love to see pictures of your printed map!

      So would I! (because that would mean we finally have a good one-piece map solution to Anniversary).

      And…. edit…

      Just picked up my printed map from Fed-X print shop… but stuck in errands and traffic from Hell… can’t wait to check it out at home…

      @Tjoek:

      Today I finally found some time to continue my work on this map, so I’ve updated my first post to link to the new files.

      In short:

      • 3 different versions: OOB, OOB with Fasces and OOB with Income tracker

      • some more stitch and scratch fixes

      • a better scanning noise removal to better preserve colours

      Looking forward to your comments!

      Woo Hoo! on my lunch break right now, but i might actually print the OOB with Fasces this weekend!

    • RE: Strategies for 42.2?

      Maybe not the best strategy, but Russia should start building a carrier fleet in the Caspian Sea as quickly as possible… prioritize spending on this fleet over all else…

      The beauty of this strategy will become self-evident quickly once done.

      @robert:

      I wish they had expanded the map more though.
      Caribbean and the far east were points of conflict, not to menton Egypt and the middle east and Ottoman empire.
      Tilst edition Napoleon Risk has a better map.

      The Napoleonic Wars of Emperor Napoleon and the French Empire from 1805 to 1815 did NOT include those areas as points of conflict… they were limited to continental Europe from Spain to Russia which is covered in the game.

      The Ottoman Empire wasn’t involved directly in the Napoleonic wars, and the Egypt campaign while Napoleon was there, was during the Republic of France,  before Napoleon was ever Emperor… I find no fault with the map of the game, it’s about the Napoleonic wars between 1805 and 1815 and the map covers all of those campaigns using the Axis &Allies system.

      Well if you’re upset about the Direction this franchise is taking,  what would your reaction have been if they instead released “Axis & Allies: Napoleon”?

      If this would have interested you more than Zombies,  it already happened in everything but name alone… search for “Worthington Games War and Peace”… Reviews can be found on Board Gamer Geeks website, YouTube, Amazon and I even think it was mentioned in the other games forum on this site… I’ve had it for a number of years and it really is Axis and Allies Napoleon… right down to the battle board and needing to roll some 1’s.

    • RE: Basic Russian Opening Strategy

      While I concur mostly with what you have posted, I can’t fully agree on #3… while there’s nothing inherently wrong with trading Leningrad every turn, giving ANYTHING away for free (leaving  Leningrad completely empty) by Russia is just something I can’t endorse.

      Some reasons are:

      1. Chance… even leaving one infantry behind gives you the chance, no matter how small of the German player getting “diced” and losing far more value than one infantry

      2. Make the German player have to think and/or possibly over commit… because of #1, the German player may change plans he otherwise would have committed to had the territory been left open… leaving as little as one troop behind may save you losing a territory elsewhere.

      3. Attrition… Russia’s biggest contribution to the Allies is being a meat grinder to German forces and causing them to lose forces for every territory they take as the game goes on… Infantry defend better than they attack, and it’s better for Russia to use infantry defending than attacking.

      4. Be flexible… no battle plan survives the first contact with the enemy… while infantry/artillery purchases are a sound strategy and good advice for Russia,  by no means is it always the best option.  A lot of what Russia should do is determined by how Germany is playing… there may be a change of plans if something alters the standard German playbook against Russia… there may come a time to favor a tank mix, or possibly even the luxury of a fighter (which has the added bonus in retaking territories without committing it to be lost in a counter attack).

      Bottom line,  as Russia,  I would NEVER recommend leaving a territory completely empty as there’s always something to be gained by leaving at least one infantry behind  (if not more). If Russia can’t afford to sacrifice one infantry in an attrition war with Germany, you’ve already lost the war…

      @Tjoek:

      If you are satisfied with it and doesn’t see any areas to fix I will finalize the IPC tracker variants and start working on the Italian roundels version.

      Aside from Honolulu being on the wrong island, I think the map looks fine… and not that Honolulu is a game breaker either… i’m fine with WotC’s silly mistake. The color changes you made from the first version are absolutely fantastic. Now bring us those Fasces roundels!

      Was that a matte laminate or gloss YG? (I assume matte) So the map is good to go other than your missing Laminate?

      My suggestion,  get Anniversary Edition before it’s gone… comes with two completely different setups out of the box, and has more strategic options than 1942.2.

      @Locke888:

      Well it’s ordered. The 13oz vinyl(matte) felt really good.
      $67, in SoCal. I’m really glad I did this. Thanks to everyone for the advise.

      Let us know how it turns out… are you going to mount this map, or roll it up when not in use? Did someone recommend 13oz or 18oz to you? I know you ordered 13oz, just wandering if that was what was recommended.

      @Nowhere:

      AA50 map with Italian Fasces Roundels??? Still coming???  :?  :-D

      Yes it is coming next to one or two versions with an income tracker at the bottom of the map. Just waiting for YG to get his first print to ensure there are no other things to change that we missed.

      Awww… income tracker optional? Still looking for just a straight up OOB map like the one you have now with just Fasces for Italy… hope if you add an income tracker that’s optional, not forced.
