      @Col.:

      Why? I understand not buying it, but why would you quit? That’s sort of like saying I’d never watch Caddy shack again because I hated Caddy shack 2

      I dunno, Highlander II: The Quickening was so bad, it made me wonder why I ever liked the original Highlander movie.

    • RE: How japan could win WW2

      Pretty sure by “infected” he means championing the use of biological warfare as the Japanese were pursuing with their unit in Korea. Not that the research was advanced in 1941 (that’s like saying the US should have just dropped the A-Bomb in 1941…same thing,  research wasn’t there).

      It’s a ludicrous topic anyways that only people with a cursory knowledge of WW2 would propose… the title of this thread could at best be “how Japan could have prolonged the war”, since Japan simply wasn’t capable of winning the war with a massive shortage of men, supplies, material and production compared to the enemies Japan engaged.

      Japan resorted to Kamikazes precisely because she ran out of trained pilots to put into cockpits… and still, kamikazes didn’t come close to winning the war for Japan… if you sacrifice either your pilots or your aircraft at the beginning of the war, you’ll only expedite Japan’s fall anyways… it’s a foley to go to war throwing away your pilots and aircraft right off the bat.

      The real world isn’t Axis and Allies, there was no path to victory for Japan. The clock to Japan’s defeat started ticking as the first torpedoes were dropped at Pearl Harbor.

    • RE: A&A IPC Chips

      With the default set of:
      25 One IPC Chips
      15 Five IPC Chips
      10 Ten IPC Chips

      for a total of 200IPC worth of chips, if production of the chips is the same (a chip is a chip as far as making them is concerned for IWNGU), I always found the base set with too few 10s and too many 1s for my use in Anniversary (not that there’s ever “too many” of anything), but if I had to have a 50-chip set of IPC chips, i’d rather it be:
      20 One IPC Chips
      15 Five IPC Chips
      15 Ten IPC Chips

      for a total of 245IPC, still would cost the same to make (i’m assuming 50 chips is 50 chips) and it solves the problem of too few 10 IPC chips in the base set.

      Having said that, i did order extra 10s (along with 25 IPC chips too), so my needs are satisfied and I can’t ever see myself ever needing more, but just thought i’d toss my 2-cents out there if ever IWNGU considered messing with the base set.

    • RE: A&A IPC Chips

      @DataHawk:

      Thank you for your responses
      I should have specified “Axis and Allies Anniversary 2017 Edition”,
      However I am curious now…how many IPC’s do you need for the Global Game?

      The game comes with Paper Money: 90 Bills Total (480 IPC’s)
      30 One IPC Bills (green)
      30 Five IPC Bills (red)
      30 Ten IPC Bills (blue)

      The I will never grow up set: 50 Chips (200 IPC’s)
      25 One IPC Chips
      15 Five IPC Chips
      10 Ten IPC Chips

      Can you play a game of AA50 with 200 IPC’s / Is 50 chips enough?
      I want to clarify, I’m interested in the product, I just want to ensure I purchase what I need to play AA50?

      IMHO, you should at least get the extra set of 25 IPC chips… you may or may not find the 10 IPC chips a bit lacking… contact IWNGU directly and see if you can get a few extra 10 IPC chips with your order (5 or 10 more 10 IPC chips)… then you’ll KNOW you’re good to go, and not wonder.

    • RE: The Campaign for North Africa (1979)

      @CWO:

      A wargame which takes seven time longer to play, in practical terms, than the duration of the actual military campaign it depicts strikes me as being somewhat excessive, or at least as being a little too ambitious.

      This game has details for every aspect… The Italian troops in World War II were outfitted with noodle rations, and in the name of historical dogma, the player responsible for the Italians is required to distribute an extra water ration to their forces, so that their pasta may be boiled. Soldiers that do not receive their pasta point may immediately become disorganized, rendering them useless in the field. It’s a fact of life really: if the Italians can’t boil their pasta, the Italians may desert.

      It was a joke, by the way. Richard Berg, the game designer and author of The Campaign For North Africa, said so himself. He’ll happily admit that this was an unreasonable game for unreasonable people.

      Every military division has a sheet of paper, and on it you’ve got a box for every battalion. It’ll tell you how many guns you have, but more interestingly, it’ll also list the fuel and water. Every game turn, three percent of the fuel evaporates, unless you’re the British before a certain date, because they used 50-gallon drums instead of jerry cans. So instead, seven percent of their fuel evaporates. Every F’ing turn you go around and make a pencil note of how much fuel you have. The pasta rule is funny, but this is what the game is about. Just doing tedious calculations all the time.

      @Requester45:

      I know that it says the average game lasts for about 60 days, or about 1500 hours…

      If you and your group meets for three hours at a time, twice a month, you’d wrap up the campaign in about 20 years.

      @TheBeninator:

      I find the role of aircraft very difficult to keep track of, since fighters and bombers may fly many spaces from an origin country to a battle. Once in the battle, everything is kind of mixed and I imagine we will forget where each fighter came from originally, or more specifically, how far it has already moved.

      How do you deal with this? I was considering some sort of markers to place in origin countries, one for bombers, one for fighters.

      You can always get a set of these…

    • RE: Questions regarding Straits

      @axis_roll:

      One of the items in our house rules for AA50 (The Chicago Rules) is:

      3)  Restricted Dardenelles straight:  Bulgaria is the only territory accessible via transport(s) in sz16

      So the Sea zone is still open to ships, but only land accessible to Bulgaria.  Doesn’t remove the sea zone from play, but eliminates the Med drops into Caucasus and/or Ukraine

      This is exactly as it should be…  :-D

    • RE: Questions regarding Straits

      The “option” to close the Dardanelles (aka The Turkish Straights) should NEVER be an “option”… I don’t care what the rules say… they should ALWAYS be closed… if you’re going to exploit the Dardanelles to land Italian troops in the Caucus, you might as well give Italy atomic bombs and say there’s a canal running from the Med through Italy and Germany and on into the Baltic Sea… it’s that stupid a concept to say the Turkish straights are open with a neutral Turkey who NEVER let any belligerents through the straights in the war, period (and i’m blaming WotC for this, not players, it should just be written into the rules as always closed, no reason to be an option at all).

      While A&A is not a hardcore super-realistic war simulator, fanciful thoughts like sailing warships through straights that were completely shut down for the entire war vs simply acknowledging “ya, they’re off-limits, just like in real history” is something easily represented in A&A without having to stretch the imagination. The only way to say the Dardanelles are open imho would be to play it as a bid for the Axis to handicap the Alliance player if such a situation was needed, because playing with the blatantly historically inaccurate open straights is a big handicap against the Allies.

    • RE: Anniversary vs. Spring '42

      @Ozymandiac:

      We currently own Global '40 & Spring '42. Both games have their pros and cons. I think our main problem with Spring '42 was that we felt the number of good moves was limited and that our gameplay became somewhat repetitive.

      My question is: how does Anniversary compare to Spring '42?

      Better in every way hands-down.

      Like you, I owned both Global and 1942 (and 1941 if it matters)… Anniversary is a step between 1942 and Global… it’s bigger in every way to 1942, and smaller in every way to Global… Anniversary also has separate set-ups for 1941 and 1942 deployments, so right off the bat, it already opens at least twice as many opening strategies than 1942 does… Italy is a separate power, Italy doesn’t exist in 1942… China has rules much more akin to Global than 1942, so China is a more important entity… our group really just loves Anniversary way more than 1942. Finally, the initial setups in Anniversary imho are just better balanced, and possibly the most balanced of any A&A game when not using bids.

      If you’re a fan of A&A (and if you play Global, I dont know how you can’t be), then you really owe it to yourself to get Anniversary… especially if you currently use 1942 as your “not as long as Global” method of play… I think you’ll find Anniversary does a much better job of playing A&A without the time commitment of Global.

      If his dining room table is 28"x51" he’s best off just reprinting the map at OOB size of 24"x46"… if the map were centered on his table, he’d only have about two inches to spare on any side… not counting anything else,  like a place to roll dice, set down army trays, battle boards, etc, etc.

      Can someone recommend a printer for a custom map make that doesnt charge 250 plus.  Im located in north jersey area.  I need a custom map for aa 50th anny edition.  I have tge file i want to use.  Thanks. Jeff.

      I’m not from New Jersey, but I am in America… I got my Scrim/Outdoor Banner Vinyl AA50 map made for like $60.

      Did it at FedEx Office Print & Ship Center… I would imagine you have one like that in Jersey… also maybe try a Kinko’s if you have one of them. If you can’t find one locally, try the FedEx online shop and have it sent to you.

      @mobius1:

      And why bring Risk into this? As if A&A itself is even close to being an accurate representation of WWII history!! :D

      Unfortunately, I can’t ever get anyone to play the more accurate ones with me, or I’d be playing those instead. I have a game of Unconditional Surrender I manage to coerce my wife into playing every now and then. We started the game last November and aren’t even past Summer 1940!

      Sorry if my joke fell flat (I really need to use smileys more)… I just brought up RISK, because a lot of A&A players snub their noses at RISK and I just wanted to drive home that open Dardanelles is bad in so many ways… but you already know that and play with them closed, so all good. There’s some folks that talk about how to take advantage of the open Dardanelles with Italy and I just find that so darn terrible in so many ways, and if you played with them open, I could see how you think the Axis always wins.

      I used to play the old-school Avalaon Hill games (like Squad Leader and what-not) back in the day, but nobody ever wants to play those… if you want to only play the more hardcore wargames, you spend a lot of lonely nights playing with yourself (no, not THAT way).  :-D

      So ya, like you, I play A&A cuz more people find playing with little plastic soldiers more fun than playing with cardboard chits.

      He never said what version he’s wanting to print and since that’s his first post, no history to work with on this guy as to what he plays… so at this point everyone is just guessing what version he plays, but nobody actually knows.

      That’s why I mentioned every forum they are in, I don’t want to just assume he plays version-x.

      The NOs favor the Axis, that’s part of the problem… is giving the Axis more of an advantage what you call “more dynamic”? Either drop the NOs or change them if you want balance.

      Another big completely moronic giant gift to the Axis is an open Dardanelles… if you want a more fair game AND you want historical accuracy the Dardanelles must be closed… if you play with them open, you secretly want the Axis to win every game and you probably think RISK is an accurate simulation of Napoleonic warfare.  Close those Turkish straights for balance and realism.

    • RE: Printing a map

      @Smoke_Bomb_Ninja:

      Hey, I am just getting back into Axis & Allies, and was wondering where I can get the map files? I would like to print one out rather than using the ones that came with the game.

      I know this is going to sound confusing… probably because it is confusing…

      First of all, there are many versions of Axis and Allies and you didn’t specify which version you wanted to play and/or print a map for…

      Possibly the biggest problem is that we don’t have a dedicated printable map forum, nor does the site even have a standard on where and how printable maps are located on the forums. Some maps are stickied in their games forum  (like 1941), some are stickied in the customization forum and some are stickied in the varients forum… still others can be in any of these forums and might not be stickied at all…

      Thirdly, with few exceptions,  most versions of Axisand Allies have multiple printable maps from one or more people… so you need to figure out which one of (possible) many you actually want to print.

      I wish this site had just one forum where all maps for ALL versions of Axis and Allies were stored to make them easy to find… or at the very least, a standard existed and was enforced by moderators that maps for A&A version-X go in version-X’s subforum, and if it’s not there, it gets moved there.

      Right now, if you want to print a map, there’s a good chance you have to visit at least three forums for a chance at finding all possible maps for each version of A&A… customizations, variants and the proper sub-forum… it’s all pretty confusing,  especially if you’re new around here…
