@meterpaffay said in How to play UK:

      • The following are three options that I played around with:
        A) Kill transport and destroyer with Carrier and Cruiser, kill submarine near Pearl Harbor with Cruiser and submarine in order to soften the blow against the USA. Take transport and fighter to support northern african forces.

Just a note on that move: it’ll only work at the lower levels of play, where people don’t always set their Japanese sub to submerge as the round 1 defence profile. I’ve found that as you go up the rankings, the UK can almost never kill that sub.

@aardvarkpepper said in kjf no good in 1942 online:

All this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy 1942 Online. There are players that can and do. But if you’re a sharp player that pays attention to detail, you will feel the differences between 1942 Online and actual board game play.

Great details on things that are indeed super bothersome about A&A Online (and that are unrelated to the UI itself, which also kind of blows). It’s not at all the same game as the boardgame, so at best it should be marketed as “inspired by the boardgame”.

I find the boardgame compares to the online inspired game in similar ways to how deep stack NL Texas Hold’em cash games compare to short stack NL Texas Hold’em tournament play.

    • RE: PRNG experiment going on right now?

@aardvarkpepper So is it your actual belief that the PNRG dice in A&A Online are significantly deviating from a random distribution? If so, in what way do you think they are deviating from a random distribution, and what is your evidence supporting this opinion?

@djensen said in PRNG experiment going on right now?:

Didn’t mean to start a thing. Was just wondering if other suspected the same. But Maybe @Nosho is right, just my incorrect perception based on limited sampling.

After losing 5 out of 6 bombers on a SBR and seeing my surviving bomber score a 1 in a recent game, I have to admit it was very tempting for me to believe something weird was going on there. But given the fast pace and the sheer amount of games we can play online, weird stuff is bound to happen often, even due to pure randomness. I estimate I’ve conducted over 2000 SBRs on A&A Online so far. Some extreme results are to be expected at some point, and will be very salient to our memory. Cheers

    • RE: PRNG experiment going on right now?

@aardvarkpepper Very intellectually honest of you to omit the rest of my sentence: “I don’t need data to assume a modern PRNG is extremely close to random”

If you or anyone else want to convince anyone that their anecdotal evidence is relevant to supporting the claim that PRNG has significant and noticeable patterns/trends that make it substantially different from randomness, then you are the one that has the burden of proof. The people that assume that PRNG is a valid randomness generator can be confident in their assumption based on the fact that, for example, GPS, works pretty well. When you make a claim that goes against the commonly accepted current understanding of things, you back it up and submit it to others for scrutiny, or hold your peace.

    • RE: PRNG experiment going on right now?

@aardvarkpepper Most PNRG are widely considered to be a valid approximation of randomness, so yes, people claiming differently have the burden of proof. I don’t need data to assume a modern PRNG is extremely close to random.

    • RE: PRNG experiment going on right now?

@aardvarkpepper Please provide evidence that PRNG dice are significantly deviating from random results. Until then, anecdotal “evidence” should indeed be dismissed as standard human biaises in the face of randomness.

This is how randomness works. It gets perceived by us as not that random. Standard human cognitive biais.

@Imperious-Leader They still will happen, but slightly less often than 1 in 216 times, which is what the regular dice produce on average.

West Russia stack is the highest percentage first turn move for Russia. .

Given that the #1 ranked Allied Platinum player of last season is always going 12/9 on WRus and Ukr, I highly doubt the WRus stack truly is the highest % move.

I’m playing Axis in Platinum (still stuck in gold with the Allies), and any time stuff remains alive in Ukr after R1 (either due to terrible luck, or an attack on Ukr with fewer than 9 units), Germany is having a blast.

    • RE: They finally changed the dice server!!!!!

@meowmix Yup, that will happen roughly once in every 216 SBR with 3 bombers. It stings hard.

    • RE: Starting to lose my mind with this game

The dice are fine, always have been. The difference is that playing online, you end up seeing WAY more rolls than playing the boardgame, so you end up seeing more extreme results, and this is what sticks to memory.

    • RE: They finally changed the dice server!!!!!

@Imperious-Leader That was never a thing. The previous Standard dice were random, but randomness can often look non-random to us mere humans.

    • RE: Locked submarines

      @aardvarkpepper

      1. Yes, “combat movement phase”, my bad.
      2. No, but if you see that you could move your sub out of the way during the combat movement phase, then you know he hasn’t set his sub to submerge, and therefore you should leave your sub there and not mark the zone as friendly.

    • RE: Locked submarines

And as soon as one of us selects a defence profile with the subs not submerging, the other will be able to see that he can move his sub out of the combat zone during the combat phase, and therefore should not move it, as he’s getting better odds at attacking than the defender. Pretty funny glitch. I’m submerging bye!

    • RE: [GUIDE] How to Climb the Ranked Ladder A&A 1942 SE Online Beamdog

@Tahweh Depending on the Allies reactions to the initial buys, sometimes I go one extra bomber and only tanks. That is only viable when Russia makes a mistake and I think Moscow is going to fall inside of 5 turns, which happens more often than I thought it would. Otherwise it’s mostly infantry and a few tanks. Now #5 in the gold rankings, so we’ll see if I can get any success later on if I make it to plat. It’s always a huge gamble though. For example, recently I lost my 3 bombers on their first SBR, and those games go south REAL quick.

What kind of strategy do you think works best for the allies against this German air power strategy?
