    • RE: Hypothetical Allied Elite expansion

For the USA, an Airborne expansion could be interesting, as the basic Airborne Infantry are not very good at keeping a territory that they captured, due to their low defensive value (2). Such an expansion could possibly include gliders and the ability to drop light armor behind the lines.

Contrary to the USSR and German (and now Japan) Elite expansions, which can quickly place the elite troops near the action, it will be a challenge to bring allied Elite troops effectively to the battlefield if they are created in their Home Country.

      @hbg-gw-enthusiast

If the river is not on the border, then the only thing that matters is where the river is in relation to the roundel:

      Rule 1.1 :

“Land units that must cross river artwork in the attack land zone before reaching the roundel in that land zone are subject to river rules”

    • RE: The FAQ Thread

      @vondox

      Question 1
“If CCP possesses a land zone adjacent to a Soviet-possessed land zone in the Production Phase it may purchase Artillery and Anti-Aircraft Artillery. These must be placed in this adjacent land zone.” (CCP, v.3.4).

At first, CCP as a minor power may only purchase Infantry, Militia, Cavalry and Mountain Infantry. “CCP may place infantry-class units and Cavalry in any Chinese Home Country land zone if they Possessed the land zone since the start of the turn. No factory is required. A maximum of 3 units per land zone per turn may be placed.”

Having a territory adjacent to a Soviet land zone simply adds the option of purchasing AA and Artillery. These are still CCP purchases that must be paid for with the CCP income but with an additional placement restriction (adjacent to the Soviet territory).

This rule has absolutely nothing to do with lend-lease.

      Question 2
You are correct. You must specify on which border the fortification is built if there are multiple borders.

“Fortifications are placed on the border of a land zone and protect from
      attacks across that border.”
      (Facilites v.3.2)

      Question 3
Correct. It’s not explicitely said in the rules, but there is no more purpose to the special events once the SCW is over, as the remaining victorious Spanish forces will be simply be set by the victorious player (Rule 13.1) and will not be moved for the rest of the game (unless a major power attacks neutral Spain).

      Question 4
The basic rules allow only the upgrade of Regular Infantry to Motorized Infantry for 1 IPP if they are in as supply path (Rule 12.2). All Mechanized Infantry must be built from a factory.

However, the Elite of the Third Reich expansion contains some additional upgrade options.

    • RE: Airbase needed for interception? V3

This was clarified in the FAQ :

Q: As Defender, do you need an Airbase for your Fighters to intercept a Strategic Bombing raid?

A: No. Not if your units are in the same zone as the facility being attacked.
If from an adjacent land zone, they need an Airbase to Scramble.

      Case closed.

What about Malaya ? is it jungle or mountain or both ?

      Definetely no jungle.

It’s hard to see if it is mountain because it is so small and there is not much terrainleft untouched.

      It’s definitely fortified…

@insanehoshi I agree with you that it is very hard to see the interior border lines on this one.
but I circled where I think the borders are.

The Macedonia / Thessaly border seems to me to be in a NW-SE axis.

I also see the black line that appears to extend West from the railway junction, but I think its part of the mountain terrain pattern. You can see a similar line above the “CED” in Macedonia.

      Hello,

Yes, both appear to be mountain. It is the same colour and pattern as you will find in the West Coast of the continental USA, but harder to see on smaller pieces of terrain.

    • RE: What on earth are the pieces that you need to play Global War 1936?! Like, just an actual list of useful pieces please.

      Here is how I proceeded.

I already owned the A&A Europe 1940 first and second editions, so with the pieces from all these sets, I had a good base for France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and USSR, plus the Chinese infrantry for KMT.

I also own the A&A pacific with red chinese soldiers that I am using for the CCP infantry (there is also one Pacific edition where the japanese pieces are red).

This still leaves a lot of pieces to buy from HBG or to scavenge from other sources (cavalry, neutrals, militia, air transports, medium bombers, coastal subs and battleships, TBDs, light cruisers, tank destroyers, advanced mech and artillery, SP-artillery (basic and advanced), motorized infantry (trucks), etc.).

Some powers have specific and different sculps available, but not all, so in the end you will need to paint pieces and still use some kind of tokens/markers to distinguish some special units.

As @Ghetty pointed out, if you can get your hands on HBG « wrong colour » pieces for units that you have to paint anyway, that is a good option to obtain cheap pieces. Their spare pieces from old A&A Games can also provide a cheaper option and can be purchased individually, but are not always available. For instance, I built almost all my Canadian forces for the CAW expansion with older « celery » color british units and painted what was missing.

I also bought some scupts from I will never grow up games. Unfortunately, I find that the 3D printing leaves a lot of visible « fibers » and the plastic is very brittle and small details can easily break, such as tank barrels and ship towers. IMO, the best sculpts from them are the German trucks which can be used for Motorized infantry (especially if you don’t own A&A Battle of the Bulge for the trucks).

I think that you have to see Global War as an ongoing project, as there will probably be new pieces available over time that can replace your generic units or markers.

I would not advise anyone to try to get « everything » before playing their first game. You have to go by steps and find out over time what you are missing and what can be improved.

    • RE: Paint Ideas?

@Super-Semple : As @Ghetty pointed out, cheap acrylic plaint from Walmart may be your problem.

For the most basic colours I bought spray paint made for plastic at a hardware store that includes the primer, then add a spray-on varnish for plastic models when I am done.

For additionnal colours, especially if you are trying to match the HBC or AA out-of-box colours, I buy Tamiya model paints and also add the varnish when I am done.

While it’s popular, I personnaly don’t like painting the ends of planes or ships. That is why we buy so many different sculpts. You get to recognize them pretty quickly.

I only made an exception for black and white lines on air transports (this is a picture, not my models!).

    • RE: What on earth are the pieces that you need to play Global War 1936?! Like, just an actual list of useful pieces please.

I think it’s best to start playing with the pieces that you have and then order HBG sculpts as you feel the need (and depending on your budget).

There a few lists out there, but you will end up with a lot of stuff that you rarely or never use.

The main problem is that not all sculpts are available in all colors, so a few paints job will be needed to expand your armies.

Look for used A&A games on websites or yard sales and paint the pieces, as this is the cheapest way to expand your collection.

    • RE: Airbase needed for interception? V3

      Hello,

Good question. I first thought that the answer would be obvious, but when looking at the rules, it’s not so clear.

If your aircraft is in an adjacent territory, then yes you do need an airbase to scramble to defend the facility or the attacked territory (Rule 8.6) .

However, if your aircraft is already in the territory, the table for air combat mentions :

« 2. The Defender decides if he wants to scramble Fighters.
      3. If the Defender has scrambled Defending Fighters, there is one round of interception combat […] »

The use of « Scramble » takes us back to rule 8.6 which requires an airbase. It does not say anything about scrambling planes without an airbase in the same territory.

It feels a bit wrong that your territory can be better defended by placing aircraft in an adjacent territory with an airbase rather than where you think the attack will happen.

I have always played with the ability to use on-site aircraft to intercept, but I now find that the rules do not say that you can do so.

Maybe one for the FAQ/Errata ?

Free France is a minor power (Rule 4.2), not France, and so I would say no your first questions and yes the the second.

    • RE: Alliance of Convenience

No, as the CCP and Japan are at War as soon as Japan attacked one Chinese faction (Warlord, KMT or CCP) (Rule 4.9).

You can only give access to your territory to an ally (Rule 0.5).

    • RE: Blitz question

You are correct in your assumption. Rule 9.5 explains the Blitz rule as follows:

“Units that can participate in a Blitz can now continue and initiate an Attack in an adjacent land zone”

Therefore, Blitz is two consecutive combat movements only.

      @chris_henry said in Scorched Earth:

@noneshallpass I agree with all you said. I think that’s the proper reading of the rules as well. And I agree about the ability to essentially snipe facilities!

Thank you for your support, but the FAQ decided that I did not have everything right. At least the need to have the territory in Soviet possession since the beginning of the turn stops surprise airborne demolition operations…

    • RE: Scorched Earth

Just another possible interpretation because this rule is so succinct, but :

The Rules for “Combat Movement Phase” begin by explaining the declarations of war (8.1). If you are not at war, you cannot combat move and cannot later “Combat Phase”. So I would say that you cannot use Schorched Earth while at peace.

The mention of “its own facilites” suggests to me that we are talking about facilites in USSR original territories. Anything outside the USSR is captured territory/facilities and not the USSR’s own facilities.

Something just does not feel right about parachuting into an empty enemy territory and removing a facility at the end of your Combat Phase, especially since only the USSR could do this.

I really think this special ability was designed only for use in the USSR, just as it was in the real Second World War when you are forced to retreat and abandon territory to the invading forces.

Maybe another subject for the FAQ.

    • RE: Does the Global War 1936-1945 board game (third edition) actually exist? How can I buy one?

@athawulf Some territories on the map, especially in China and Europe still feel small and crowded even on the 5x10 map. Things get especially busy on the Eastern Front when Germany invades the USSR.

Fleets can also fill a seazone, especially if the British, USA, Japan or Italy concentrate a lot of their ships in a single seazone.

So no, the bigger map does not mean that you should use larger miniatures.
