Good point on the Suez.  :-o I never had the cruiser survive G1 (high spirits I suppose), we’ll have to resolve that before we continue…
Glad you pointed that out before we had some sort of butterfly effect.  Thanks.

This is the state of the game, just before J1 (I’m playing Allies, I opponent has retired to think it over):

I’m enacting Operation Iron Horde (detailed under “Russian moves to start the game”).  He faces: India (2 Russian fighters, 1 Russian tank, 2 UK inf, AA and IC); China (2 US inf, 1 US fighter, 1 UK fighter); Borneo (1 UK inf); New Guinea (2 UK inf); Buryatia (6 Russian inf), Sinkiang (2 Russian tanks, 2 US inf); SZ45 (UK sub, JP sub); SZ15 (2 UK cruisers, UK carrier); Egypt (1 German tank).

Would you still make your standard J1 move?

    • Rule modification

The turn sequence I’m advocating is:
      Collect income
      Place Units
      Combat move
      Combat
      Non-combat move
      Purchase units
(secretly)… potentially very unnerving in a 4 or 5 player game

I expect this would alter the game drastically.  Conquest would become, essentially, a negative act: the US takes Southern Europe (knowing it can’t be held) to make Germany poor, not to make itself rich; seesaw territories like West Russia benefit no one rather than everyone; capturing a capital would only net the conqueror those IPC’s that the defender failed to spend.  Also a player would be forced to look down the road and decide what he’ll need without knowing all the facts (a reality of warfare).
My concern is that game balance might suffer.  The designers did a great job evening the game out.  Do you think this change would tend to favor one side, or power, over the other(s)?

    • RE: Russian moves to start game

      Tell me what you think…

      :-o Operation Iron Horde  :-o
      -----------USSR–-------------
      Buy: 8I
      Attack: WR- 2I & 1F from Karelia; 3I from Arch; 1A from Cauc; 1A & 1F from Rus
Move: 2I SFE to Bury; 2I Yakut to Bury; 2I ENU to Novo; 2I Novo to Sink; 2T Rus to Sink; 1T Arch to Novo; 2I Kaz to Cauc; 3I Rus to Cauc; 2F WR to India
Place: 4I in Cauc; 4I in Rus
      –---------UK–----------------
      Buy: IC, 1B
Attack: JP SS w/ Aussie SS; NG w/ 2I from Aus; JP TS w/ F from CV; plus whatever’s clever in Atlantic
Move: India Ocean Fleet out of range of JP Southern fleet; 1I Persia to India; 1I Jordan to Persia; B to Rus; 1F to China
      Place: IC in India
      –-----------US–-------------
      Buy: IC, 1B, 1CV
      Attack: as possible (esp. Kwang)
Move: 1F HI to Aus; 1F WUS to HI; 1F EUS to UK; 1B ESU to HI; CZ 10 Fleet to CZ 20; 1DD CZ20 to CZ55; 2I Sink to China.
Place: IC in Sink; 1CV in CZ55

The USSR forces in East Asia will evict Japanese Asian forces plus all those Allied fighters force the Japanese Navy to contract and defend xports.  Germany is allowed to run wild but US and UK fighters from new IC’s can defend Russia before it’s overrun.
