Got them from ebay, no idea of the brand but they are about 8mm in diameter and about 1mm thick. They are usually sold in lots of 10 or 20 and are not that expensive. I’ve been using them for a while for my other hobby (battery hatches for my rc model aircraft) so I’ve always got a few about. Thats how the idea first struck me to do a magnetic wall version. One more thing I have to add, …dont forget to rough up the area you’re gluing the magnets to as this will improve their adhesion. I’ve had a few “separations” because I didn’t do it.

some more pics, this one I had to print in sections myself (a lot of bother) and glued the sheets to a piece of sheet steel, then I covered the whole map in clear adhesive vinyl (to protect it) and then glued the steel sheet to a piece of mdf board. Thats why Im going to get this new map done properly in one piece.

Nope this is the only version I have, sorry. The magnets are small and very strong so the grey and red counters stack really well and look great with a figure on top. Here is the map and miniatures i did for 1942. I got that map from the 1942 forum (I think) and cant claim credit for it. Apologies for the quality of the pics (they were taken with my phone).

Done…two minor errors (one african neutral name is wrong and the marsh in the soviet union) but that wont affect game play. All else should be ok. Ive included the starting positions for airfields and ports but not factories. Anyway now that I have nice, big, clear and wrinkle free map, I’ll be off to the local printer to get it done, then its onto some sheet steel and thats part one finished. Here’s the link to the map for those interested.

Thanks Kreig, just one more question, or rather confirmation for me regarding scrambled fighters…since they are scrambled for defence I take it they cannot retreat from a sea battle that is going badly? thanks, mark.

RE: AAG40 FAQposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Questions…I know that the US cannot move into or through a sea zone occupied by japanese warships or where there is an island controlled by Japan before a DOW, but …1) If France falls on G1 can the US occupy a vacant FIC (if there are no UK/Anzac/Japanese forces already there) before it goes to war with Japan?. 2) Can the US move aircraft/troops/ships into any UK/Anzac held/occupied territory/sea zone if they (UK/Anzac) are not yet at war with Japan? 3) assuming the answers to both 1) and 2) are no, is it the case that the US is indeed strictly neutral at the start of the game and is basically restricted to building up/consolidating its forces in the Pacific prior to it going to war with Japan? Many thanks.

If its not a problem with the designer then I would be pleased to post the finished map on here but it looks like it will be a very big file.

RE: GLOBAL MAP AVAILABILITY FOR MOUNTING AT HOMEposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Will do. But i’m still at stage one….It’s taking me a bit of time to dress up the “Hi res global map” posted on this forum with my paint software, the posted one’s quality is not quite good enough. But i’m getting there. So far I’ve doubled its size, and am removing all of the visible creases. I’ve also started re-labelling territories, done new national markers for each nationality as well as improved the convoy routes and the kamikaze areas. I’ve also re-lined the sea zones and its all starting to look pretty darn good. When its done I’ll have it printed (and enlarged to about 1.5 times) on a sheet of adhesive vinyl and then stick it to some sheet metal. Then I’ll fix it to a board, which will then hang on the wall. It will be a pricey exercise but worth it in the long term as it will get a regular work out.

RE: GLOBAL MAP AVAILABILITY FOR MOUNTING AT HOMEposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
I use some neodymium magnets and glue them with epoxy on both the counters and the miniatures. The magnets are very strong and the discs stack very well. The hardest part is to ensure their polarity is the same when putting them on. Trust me it works great and the miniatures dont slide into neighbouring territories. All in all the best way to play the game and it takes up very little room to play (a wall and a small table). Everyone gets the same perspective on the game and no more risk of knocking anything over. It can even be left set up ready for a game. Give it a try.

GLOBAL MAP AVAILABILITY FOR MOUNTING AT HOMEposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
I was wondering if a) the company sells the europe and pacific maps as sheets to enable them to be mounted on sheet metal or b) if anyone has created a quality down-loadable map for just such an idea (mounting on a metal sheet).
I have both games (europe and pacific) but playing them on a table is proving a bit awkward (time and space as well as my aging back). I’d prefer to magnetise the playing pieces and play on a big metal board mounted on a wall… but of course the maps are crucial… and yes I’ve tried photocopying the boards but the creases (where the boards fold) get copied as well and look awful. AH used to sell their maps as paper only for mounting at home and surely this would be a good idea for this game.
Any help would be appreciated…cheers

RE: AAG40 FAQposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Allied Factories in Asia?. Where in eastern Asia can the Allies build a factory? I ask since my understanding of the rules is that if the US/UK/Anzac forces “liberate” a Japanese held chinese territory (especially one with a japanese factory), that territory reverts back to China (right?). So how can the allies take advantage of “chinese” land territories where japanese factories exist? and if they cant, can they opt to destroy the factory if there is a risk of the territory being taken back by the japanese? Thanks.
Asia is not just merely China. As I understand it: Any factories on japanese occupied china territories that contain a factory (build by japan) get destroyed when it gets liberated by the allies. Since china territory reverts automatically back to chinese control (since they don’t have a capital) no factories can ever be build on chinese lands by the allies. just naval bases and airbases edit: and these only by the japanese i think they just won’t be destroyed after liberated.
Thanks but I’d prefer some definitive answers from Kreighund if possible, certainly French Indo China and Korea are eligible for allied capture and factory placement but the questions still remain ….1. Can the allies build factories in China? 2. Can they capture a major factory complex (after it is reduced to a minor) and utilise it? 3. Can they opt to destroy a captured minor factory (a reduced major factory) if they want to? (especially if they cant use it). 4… Can they upgrade it if they are permitted to use it? China has no capital as such and its system of recruiting and placing replacements reflects the actions of both the imperial and communist chinese forces during the war, so factories are useless to the chinese in game terms. It seems unfair to allow the japanese only to take advantage of the capacity to build factories in China and doubly unfair if when built and captured, the allies still cannot use them as they can AA guns and airfields. Official ruling please. Thanks in advance.

RE: Placement of China reinforcements - clarification pleaseposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
Seems a little ludicrous but hey…this game seems to be full of little problems but it does put more strategic importance on wiping china out altogether as early as possible, if necessary at the expense of going after india. Thanks gents. One more question if I could…if a kamikaze attack (or a number of them are made on a carrier with aircraft, if the carrier is sunk are the aircraft lost?

Placement of China reinforcements - clarification pleaseposted in Axis & Allies Pacific 1940
How should this work? Given that China cannot buy a factory, can China buy say 5 infantry and place them all in one territory (regardless of the base value of the territory) at the end of its turn. Or must China comply with the value of the territory for placement, e.g can only place up to 1 infantry in Yunnan and 2 in Shantung, etc. I just played a game where my opponent was stacking all of his infantry in one province (generally value of one) right next to my japanese forces. What is the ruling??? thanks

Some Rules questions…posted in Axis & Allies Spring 1942 Edition
I have played 1942 five times now and have a couple of questions
- If used for a bombardment prior to invasion should battleships/cruisers be susceptible to damage from the first round of subsequent combat results? (Well at least during the first round of combat) e.g. Two cruisers accompany a transport (carrying two units) which performs an amphib assault on a territory containing say five units… The attacker rolls (it doesn’t matter what the result is) but the defender rolls five hits… here’s the question, should the additional hits by the defender beyond the two required to kill the invading ground units be carried over onto the naval units? Since it is an amphibious assault it makes sense to me to allow ship casualties in this instance, since the first round of combat battle involves a coastal engagement (shore guns etc).
2)Does the presence of a submarine in a sea zone prevent any accompanying battleship/cruisers (during an amphib assault) from conducting a shore bombardment? They way I read the rules, the battleships/cruisers cannot ignore the submarine in this case and a seas battle must commence.
3)If a sea battle must commence, can the invading player allocate some of his ships to engage the submarine while the others are set aside for shore bombardment? it seems a waste of resources to have two battleships and several cruisers etc tied up fighting a lone sub…
- Transports: Can an unaccompanied or accompanied transport move through a zone containing an enemy submarine/s? Can they load/unload from a sea zone containing an enemy submarine/s?
Thanks in advance,
