Well, usually it will happen that you will have those fighters on US carriers, even without wanting to use it in this way. If Australia can earn around 15 - and usually that is what they can get until Japan is taking care of islands, India, China, Russia - they will buy a fighter every round or two. In order to be able to invest both in Europe and Asia, US can save some money by buying a fighter less. Effectively, if they buy a carrier and wait for two rounds, they are getting excellent defending power for 16 IPC.

With those ANZAC fighters sitting on the US carriers, it is then opportunism - let them sit back near Australia coast and if an opportunity arises, go kill those transports.

After I reported this game, @Stucifer made some really good comments on the strategy, so I wanted to point out that thread once more :) In case someone wants to join in with the strategy discussion.

This combo is strong, not only due to colours, but because you really need to watch the whole Pacific - there is no safe place anymore for Japanese.

But, we could create a thread with “nasty but legal tactics”, as you called it, @gamerman01.

One that really made me angry was the fighter attack “over” the wall of ships. Let me explain. Germans were essentially locked in the Mediteranean, with my strong US fleet at Gibraltar. They had fighter on the carrier just inside Pillars of Heracles, launched the attack of a single sub to the whole US fleet of 20 ships, and on basis of that, were able to launch the fighter to sink 10 US transports, 3 sea zones away, at West Indies :)

The explanation was that the sub had tried to break through and if it would have succeeded (?!), the carrier could go through and take the fighter. I was seeing it as sending to a suicide mission - I was wrong obviously. :cry: :face_with_head_bandage:

@simon33 What do you mean? You wanted to land planes there and forgot?

@gamerman01 Yes, I understand and agree. I think these are better suited for Pacific, because US fleet does not need to be offensive most of the time. At least not offensive in big battles, they can pick Japanese smaller groups around. When defending, Allied fighters will still shoot.

@666 This is getting difficult, everywhere :) You are a very good player, putting units just where they have to be. Italians have to run away. Mare Nostrum? Seems not… Maybe they can help with getting back Atlantic wall though?

I will try to make it fun for few more turns, maybe you make a mistake, somewhere, somehow… If not, I will try to prepare better for a next match.

For a moment, it seemed I will be able to do something, but Germans were bogged too long in Russia, you surrendered territories, but just enough so I don’t get too much advantage too quickly.

Japan could not deal with overwhelming naval force in Pacific unfortunately, it had to show on land. In Mediterranean, you played just as you should, UK planes were always in range of everything man :) It was frustrating at times.

@flyingbadger This was a great game, I enjoyed how you tried to overturn it on few occasions.

It is very nice of you to say that about possible result, but it is not true. You have won twice, so you deserved it. But all 3 were very close games.

I would love to play again, immediately :) If you wish, I can set it up with 7 handicap for me as an Axis?

@flyingbadger Well, in our previous game, Japan went too strong, and I am feeling this Pearl Harbour disaster might change it quite a lot. I hate losing 94% battle, but this is why it’s a fun game. I think it was a good attack, I would do it again.

I also believe Gibraltar is a good way to go, especially as Germans did poor in the Scotland battle. This is also something that will change the game, can’t just put some more naval units to stop you doing whatever you will do in Atlantic.

I am clear now, you are right, carrier scrambles require a warship, airport scramble can defend transport as well.
