    • RE: Discussions about homemade custom dice

      Yep, and many aren’t even perfectly square. The colors are uneven. There is flash on some of the edges.  My use of the sharpie to color in the pips on the cubes was rather amateurish. But like I said, it works for our group.

      If you were ever to stop by my house for a game, I still have 100+ dice to choose from for your rolls.  This was simply an exercise to demonstrate possibilities other than 75 cents per die.

    • RE: Discussions about homemade custom dice

      So I created an inexpensive way to get my battle dice.  I purchased a container of 500 “counting cubes” from Amazon that has 50 of each color, ten different colors.  I marked my cubes as ones, two, threes and fours.  These cubes are not perfectly balanced or shaped, so if your group is fanatical about that kind of thing this isn’t for you - stick to casino dice or whatever.  But I’m satisfied that with the use of dice towers our results will be suitably random.

      All this for just $17 US.

    • RE: Concerning National Objectives and Starting Income

      Also to clarify, National Objectives are only collected during the collect income phase of the turn.  With that in mind, it would not be included for the initial IPC dispersal.

    • RE: A&A IPC Chips

      Yeah, Global has 120+ IPC’s worth of possible NO’s, some of which are of course exclusive of one another.  But my guess would be you need enough chips to have at least 300 IPC’s in play.

      It’s not even enough for the starting cash for G40 (241 IPC’s).  We use an old poker ship set I had from years ago.  It has white, red, blue and black chips which we use as 1, 5, 10 and 25 IPC counters, respectively.

    • RE: Standardization of Dice Colors

      We simply match our dice color to the chip colors used under stacks of units.  On our table it is:

      white=one
      gray=two
      green=three
      red=four (dice only, since red chips indicate five)

      It’s just a house rule kind of thing, making it easier when you grab dice for rolls.  We have two dice towers and four buckets of dice on our table.

    • Has anyone used GHQ micro armour?

      I stumbled across this site searching for new units. They appear to be metal, with a high level of detail and a reasonable cost.  I was wondering if anyone has bought pieces from them recently, and if so, what they thought?

    • Shoutout to combatminiatures.org

      Just want to recognize a good vendor. I’ve been buying a lot of pieces lately (A LOT) and recently bought some infantry from this site. I initially bought a bunch of Japanese units. An hour later, I went back and bought some Russian pieces.

      The owner of the site contacted me via e-mail to let me know he would ship the two orders together and refund me the $3.50 in shipping for a second package. He didnt have to do it, but did. Sellers like that deserve our business.

    • RE: WinterAdler's Customization - G40 Setup Card Deck & more

      I too like your setup cards. What program did you use to create the cards? Did you have card stock to print them on, or did you cut all the individual cards to size?  A great idea.

    • RE: Why do you buy a sub G1?

      @simon33:

      The second reason is that the sub can block the SZ125 NO. If you use a DD to do this, UK air can easily take it out.

      We had always assumed that the Axis required a surface warship to block the SZ125 NO.  You learn something every day…

    • RE: Axis Victories (what's the "magic" trick?)

      Cornwallis- playing with a closed group of friends can be difficult. We experienced something similar in our group. What we found was that we were playing the Axis too conservatively, particularly the Japanese. An aggressive J1 attack, including against the US Pacific fleet, can significantly change your outcomes.

      We found we were reluctant to bring the US into the war due to NO’s, and thus artificially limited Japan’s growth. Feel free to unleash the Japanese Navy.

      Your mileage may vary, of course.  Happy hunting!

    • RE: The "Red Tide" Strategy

      What also works in some applications is a mixed buy, particularly if a G1-G3 attack is not in the coming. I have used a combination of three tanks and six infantry with some success. By the time the G4 attack comes, Russia has 11 tanks and two mechs, as well as the initial aircraft.  Place the armor in Novgorod and the infantry in Moscow.

      This is more than sufficient to make the breakthrough into Scandinavia, without really weakening the Novgorod defense.

    • An issue with transports

      So we had this situation arise from our game this weekend:

      At the end of G3, Germany places two transports into SZ113.  Germany is NOT at war with USSR. Also in SZ113 is a Soviet sub and Soviet cruiser.

      At the beginning of G4 Germany declares war on Soviet Union. What is the ruling on those transports?  There are no German combat ships in that sea zone.

      My German opponent wanted to load those two transport and drop the troops off into SZ115 to reinforce Finland.  If I had aircraft in Novgorod (and I did), could I scramble to destroy those transports in SZ115?

      Since they are beginning the turn in a hostile SZ, don’t they have to move during the combat movement phase? And if the move to offload to a SZ adjacent to a territory where I have aircraft at a function airfield, can’t I scramble to defend that sea zone?

      There were so many moving parts to this issue (in our minds) we weren’t sure how to proceed.

      *edited for correction, Soviet cruiser not transport

    • RE: Where to start?

      @Tjoek:

      The customizations that I like most are ones that are quite generic and can be used and reused for multiple AA games.

      The most noteworthy are hit dice (which significantly speeds up game play) and magnetic flight stands and carriers.

      I have to second this - magnetizing your aircraft for flight stands and carriers is a great (as well as relatively inexpensive) place to start. Once you magnetize your aircraft, then you can set about painting them if you wish. Doing it the other way around just messes up your paint job.

    • RE: Where to start?

      I suppose it doesn’t much matter which game you mod, since most pieces can be used in several (if not all) of the games.  For instance, Japanese and German fighters are pretty common, as are American bombers.  I enjoy painting the aircraft, so that’s where I’m focusing. Tanks are fun too.  I am putting off the infantry pieces simply because there are so many and so detailed.

      Bottom line is, paint what you think you’ll enjoy painting. Mod the maps you enjoy playing. Through time and practice, you’ll refine what you are doing and better understand what you enjoy. Happy hunting!

      What’s the deal with the “Temporary Sanctuary” in Western US?

      This looks awesome btw. We are looking to print a large map for our 4x8 table, and I wthink we will hold off until you are finished.

      @simon33:

      @aequitas:

      Q: Can you legally reach Ukraine from Egypt without an AB?

      Yes, assuming you mean landing in Ukraine.

      Egypt -> SZ98 -> SZ99 -> SZ100 -> Ukraine.

      No neutral crush needed.

      I thought going from SZ99 to SZ100 meant flying over Turkey, which is a strict neutral.
