You are correct that I was taking an absolutist position, but I thought that this simplistic and addle-brained poll/thread lent itself to such. My first instinct was to steer clear of it, but at least some intelligent discourse was generated.

Well that’s different. So what you’re trying to say is that Germany fell apart after the war which is absolutely correct. Back to my original argument, WWI led to enormous social change that sparked the technological progress which led to the lifestyle we now enjoy. In Germany particularly democracy and progressive ideals had been supressed for generations, but after WWI this was no longer possible due to the chaos you describe. Additionally, an affect of both world wars has been the spread of democracy by the victorious powers of Britain, France and the US.

Again how would the world be different without the world wars. I think it would be more backward, less changed, less democratic, more imperialistic, but perhaps more stable because Democracy tends to breed instability.

I like France because they are able to play the ‘victim’ quite well at the same time they can expand slightly as to make themselves slightly stronger so that the major combantants in the Austro/Russo/Turkish wars will not care much about you except as an ally. It seems either Germany, England or both will try to invade France which often garners support from the other powers.

Another thing I forgot the first time is that my group usually uses a “treaty” to end our games-someone has to leave, so we just slice up the world with whichever powers are left and trade off some territories so everyone’s happy. 8)

Also in your strategy, you should take into account the standard bid of 18-24 when playing non-RR.

If it were done that way in history more bloody wars would have occurred very soon after the end of WWII. The USSR would not likely have done well as it would again be squeezed from east and west.

Not to mention all the bloody guerilla wars they would have had to fight in those countries they took over.
