Perhaps this needs to be moved to political discussion after my comments:

Shanghai is quite nice, and, yes, Beijing needs a ton of work.  Although I don’t think when people say that they think that Beijing city authorities should kick out thousands of poor residents on the city outskirts in preparation for the 2008 Olympics.

Overall, though, China has some significant problems that it needs to work out if it’s going to overtake the U.S.  Their environmental policy is god-awful.  90% of their water is undrinkable, and the dust storms that roll off the northern border are large enough to create their own weather systems.  There was also that benzene spill that happened last year, the one that was 50 miles long.  Unfortunately, while that was a notable case, it’s not the only one.

Also, China is definitely benefitting from its cheap labor supply right now.  The problem, however, is that their current birth rate is not high enough to maintain the population (1.73 children/woman versus the 2.3 widely considered necessary to prevent population declien), and in about a decade or 15 years, they will have an elderly population that makes the baby boomers and the problems associated with it look like nothing.  The Chinese need to start shifting to service industries, like India has, in order to keep their economy rolling.  It’s fine for a time to develop manufacturing capacity, but they don’t necessarily have the supply of educated workers that can compete and perform the way the country needs.  Also, some estimates of public debt mark it as 85% of GDP.

This isn’t to say that the U.S. doesn’t have massive problems as well.  But the infrastructure in the U.S. is well-established, and the procedures time tested but still open to change and challenge.  I think that’s a significant advantage over China, and while I know you aren’t saying that China will overtake the U.S., I think these are all points in favor of caution.

I don’t really listen to the guys music, but I thought he was kinda funny in live appearances.

Bush did not personally order the destruction of ballot boxes. IF anyone did that, it would probably be Cheney. I don’t think Bush has a wicked bone in his body, he may or may not be foolish and brash, but I don’t think he has the intention of harming the US Gov’t or it’s citizens.

Yes so b/c daley is someone you don’t like he must personally have a hand in this, but when its Bush he doesn’t. I would argue a better case could be made against Bush in Florida b/c his bro is gov there. Daley could always blame a ‘bad egg’ aid. However, in neither instances is this a valid excuse, and really just to absolve the guilty among those who would support them.

Smith, if you get caught in a scandal, the proper thing to do is resign, or you could be like our beloved Bill, and stay in office.

Then why don’t the republicans do this? Note that they only resign when its a sexual scandal b/c they have to. If you are the moral authority and get caught doing something immoral then you have no choice, and in fact to stay in would only damage yourself and your advocates more.

Mr. Ryan’s only impropriety was wanting to have Sex with his Wife. He just didn’t want to reveal that they attended social gatherings of an adult nature. But he didnt want to have sex with other people or let her do the same. When she said no, he dropped it.

No that’s a very simplistic interpretation. What I hear was he wanted to ‘swing’ and she didn’t. Of course he being the moral authority and her the corrupt hollywood neophite this could only be spun so much thereby causing the resignation.

Daley on the other hand, would burn the flesh off his own screaming mother if it meant he could get 4 more years in office.

And bush would probably be willing to kill or have killed another 1000 Americans. What happened to compassionate conservativism, or his ‘love’ of Americans. Oh wait he never said he loved Americans only America. So I guess he was being compassionate by giving those 1000 a quick death.

I think the point would be to just NOT engage in a scandle…or is that too simplistic for the Dems and Reps to do???

Well there are two problems here. One is that the judgement of what is scandal is usually made by the opposition party and therefore incredibly biased, and two the most virtuous presidents have been the worst ie Hoover, Carter, and perphaps even LBJ. In recent years there have emerged journals from Lincolns earlier years involving some of his sexual escapades in Springfield as a young attorney/congressman, and were authored not by himself, but by his friends and townspeople.

Medical school is different, of course. typically 40 hours a week of classes, and around 20 or so of studying. I recently came off a 12-day-straight stretch of 15+ hour days. This was in addition to the extra 10+ hours of studying that i had to do.

I know, but medical school is much different then undergraduate…:)

the germans split their forces too thin in Russia i believe. I mean northern army goes to leningrad (and starves it instead of sieging) one army to moscow one army stuck in stalingrad and one in the caucasus.

This and the bad weather and circumstances prevented the blitzkrieg to continue. They should have focussed on Moscow and then rush to the caucasus.

Forget the V2 and just build planes. Don’t bomb London with little fighter cover losing too much planes. They should have copied the RAF defense when defending against the air raids which costed them so much industrial damage.

Production was one of the downfalls of germany too. Too little fuel and resources on any given time.
