    • RE: Axis & Allies: North Africa?

      North Africa with a BOTB influence would be cool.  Probably have to be more land based then though, if it was widened to show more of the Med, like up to Sicily or Malta and across to Morroco for Torch, then it would more likely have to be more traditional AA.

      North Africa or Stalingrad with the BOTB look and supply aspects would make another nice tactical addition to the AA family.

      @murraymoto:

      UK’s drop in IPC income in the first few rounds will start to clip in on their ability to pump out aircraft as they lose Africa, Australia & India.

      And how do they prevent them from being captured?  Frankly, they should just order their units in India to retreat to Russia for use as fodder.

      That’s kinda the question you are supposed to be answering… it’s your strategy.  How you sustain large amounts of aircraft builds in the face of ever shrinking income?  4 FIG/BMBs built on turn one.  How many less by turn 3?  Turn 4?  How do you keep your income going to take Norway and then pump more planes or tanks later on?

    • RE: Nazi Germany VS The Soviet Union

      @Obergruppenfuhrer:

      Good post Deaths Head 420. Hitler was the main problem when you bring up the interesting topic of “Liberators over conquerors.”

      @Obergruppenfuhrer:

      I believe the real problems withing the Reich affecting the war effort were Hitlers and Himmlers diabolical insanity and the lack of a cognitive, centralized leadership between the Weihrmacht, Navy, Luftwaffe and the SS.

      Very true–when you look at how it was Hitler who personally directed the Panzers from Group Centre to turn north to Leningrad when they were less than 200 miles from Moscow (actually closer to Moscow than Leningrad) and lose almost a month making the 600 mile round trip.  Had they just pressed onto Moscow they would have beaten many of the Siberian reinforcements to their positions and would likely have taken Moscow.  With the delay to Leningrad and the subsequent rain and snow along with the reinforcements, when they returned, they just didn’t have the time or materials.

      The lack of unified leadership is what gave the decisions for the Luftwaffe to make over 400 types of planes during the war compared to 1/4 of that for the US–too much infighting for position by their accomplishments rather than accomplishing winning the war.

    • RE: UK fleet or US fleet ?

      @Adlertag:

      What do you buy ?

      Do you purchase 2 fleets ? One UK fleet to clean the convoy zones and protect the trannies, and another US fleet to clean the convoy zones and protect the trannies ? Isnt that poor use of resources ?

      At least early on, depending on Axis investment in the Atlantic, 2 fleets will be necessary to clear the convoys.  Continuous Axis deployment of subs can keep the UK pinned in without it’s own fleet. A couple rounds of coordinated DD & FIG/BMB strikes can clear up for UK to give protection duties to US as UK convoys open up.

    • RE: 9 subs versus 2 CV 4 ftrs, on defense

      Another thought would be about which is going to be easier to replace for you country.  Subs are great fodder and replacing them is easier on the pocketbook than FIG’s or CV’s, and especially if you are Japan.  US can afford to usually replace that kind of loss, but most other countries can’t.

      For 72 IPC’s, I’d go with a mix like ones mentioned earlier, with DD’s, CV’s (+FIG) & SS’s.  If split over a couple rounds, maybe SS/DD first in case of early strike

    • RE: Fighter Swarm

      I would expect that having the US/UK build exclusively fighters means to use in Russia means that they are ignoring Italy in Africa, save what they can strafe from the air and ignoring Japan, until Japan approaches Moscow from the east.  No Operation Overlord or Operation Torch because there are no allied boats in the atlantic and hence no ground pounders ready to give Germany 2 fronts.

      Yeah, the Eastern front will be a bear (pun intended) but the Godzilla creeping up behind and the Italians expanding will be a clock ticking on the allies doom.

      Bombers could help, but I think you have to fight the war with a more balanced approach because those fighters/bombers will have to take hits in strafing attacks without ground forces.

      UK’s drop in IPC income in the first few rounds will start to clip in on their ability to pump out aircraft as they lose Africa, Australia & India.

    • RE: Brainstorming: What's the best way to kill the Japanese Fleet?

      @Imperious:

      And how exactly will those Subs attack the American Subs?  Each Sub is in a different Sea Zone, Japan will need a Destroyer for every Sub they wish to attack.  If Japan does a Sub build, America will simply move their Sub Fleet into Japan’s Sea Zone, which will eliminate Japan’s ability to produce units from it.

      Thats the easy part.
      Japan since on J1 they own the Pacific get to set up that picket line first because they enjoy space , while US player is stuck at his back line.
      Once the American player gets his subs near enough, the Japanese subs hit at 2 and US defends at one,

      May be talking about hitting the subs when they are together here, in 64, 59, or 58.

      @wodan46:

      Plan A and B both do this:
      A1build: 6 Subs
      A1move: Move fleet to WUS as usual, land 2 Fighters and 2 Bombers in Alaska, move Infantry to Canada, have British Infantry move to Alaska.

      Plan A does this
      A2build: 6 Subs, 1 Bomber
      A2move: Consolidate fleet in either Sea Zone 64, 59, or 58, where-ever its least threatened.

      If the subs moved to one of those three zones with surface ships they’d be vulnerable to Japanese attack.  If they went straight from 56 out to the other zones without consolidating that would keep the subs safer, but would leave a surface ship consolidation more vulnerable.

      @TG:

      With that said, I think the “correct” build order is:
      1. Italy First
      2. Other country specific units + unlockable tech units
      3. New Custom Units

      Definitely, I’d order mine today.

      @Adlertag:

      Situation:
      You are Russia, and must choose between two targets.

      trying to get a clear picture of the board and troop locations in my head.  Why is it that you can’t attempt both?  (edit) what is the overlap of units utilized in the two options?  example-4 tanks, 3 fighters…

      My first impression is to say take choice 1) and stay out of Moscow another turn.  Gives you more time and flexibility in Russia.  Once in Moscow you’re praying for those crack Siberian troops and Russian winter to arrive and it’s all too desperate.

      As to the 2nd option, what’s the condition of UK or even US in the Atlantic–are they in a position to take Norway even though that’s IPCs for them and not for USSR, it would mean less for GER.

      interesting…

      wondering what the other colors for countries are, says 8 and shows 6.  There are lots of specialty units listed on the website for the online game, and there are some in the picture close to the board that look like they could be those.  The one noticeably darker colored fighter in the purple group could be the specialty fighter listed, could be…

      bgg post says board is roughly 19x35 trifold, but has nukes… niiiicce.

    • RE: Worst A&A game?

      @captainzlog:

      I got this game for Christmas and enjoy it very much - even got the wife into playing!  The order card and combat systems are simple but effective, and easy to learn.  Just got Battle of the Bulge and it looks confusing and over-complex…… D-Day is definitely the tops!

      @frimmel:

      Also book thru the BOTB forum here. And don’t be afraid to ask questions. I’d be happy to help.  :-)

      And the guys who just replied (Krieghund/Frimmel) above really know their stuff and are great to have help.

      Give Bulge a chance, get your butt kicked as the Allies a couple times and you start to understand the logistical side and you’ll likely get that epiphany moment when it clicks about how it all works together.  Both DDay and Bulge I consider to be great additions to the AA lineup and very enjoyable.

    • RE: Latest optional rules; escorting fighters & closed bosporus

      I haven’t played AA50 with the interceptor rule yet, but I like it.  Using it in Guadalcanal gives it more realism but how it works in the big one, we’ll see.  I don’t think that either side can dump everything into SBR too early without unleashing the other side from a front, but having that happen in previous incarnations got to be a drag.

      Maybe give the bombers an attack in the dogfight phase of 1, (that’s what it is in AAG) and at least for the american bombers, they could shoot back.

    • RE: Hmm - weird situation, what would the rule be?

      Also, should your Japanese fleet survive they have a choice:

      1. stay and attack the American BB
      2. move to another seazone to potentially attack there.

      they are locked into staying, and depending on what you built, you may or may not want to stay anyhow.

    • RE: 2 Turn Ship Construction

      For comparing out abilities, putting 600 subs vs 120 BB or 200 Cruisers vs the BB or whatever may help to show the statistical differences, but you’ll never have 600 subs or 40 BB in a real game.  Usually you will have them in a combined fleet of ships or you would prefer them to be.  They are often alone though.

      I was thinking of the beginning setup of AAE.  In the Gibraltar Strait you have a Destroyer, which for all intents and purposes has the stats of a Cruiser in AA50.  To take that I have often see merely a fighter and a sub take it on, and the sub being sacrificed.  Or the Italian fleet comes over and lands on Gibraltar at the same time, having the BB absorb any possible hits.
        But at the outset of AAR, there is a BB in that strait and often a larger force is brought to bear, that because 2 hits are needed so the goal is to get them on the 1st round rather than give the BB 2 shots.

      So there is a larger difference in the mental impact of a BB vs other ships.  There is a thread in the AA50 section about how a Cruiser/Destroyer combo is always more useful and versatile than a BB for the same cost.
      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=13648.0
      Not advocating for/against on that, just pointing out the discussion at this point.  But in that you are talking ship combos, not all BB vs anything else.  For BB you get some additional mental agony for the opponent while you get some additional financial agony.

      adding interceptors to factory defense lineup after the AA guns fire can help to balance the heavy bomber threat to production centers.
