    • Player Aids

      These are the player aids I currently use. Some have been posted previously in earlier versions in another thread, but I want to gather everything under the ‘1936’ subforum.

      Expansions used:

      • Sealion

      • DAK

      • Winter War

      • Manchuoku

      • Seaplanes

      • Fortifications

      • Turkey at War

      I have switched to a magnetic board for some of the ‘add-on’ content.

      • Tech Tracker

      • Turn Tracker

    • RE: USA Strategies

      We play the 1939 setup:

      Lend leasing is a major part of our US strategy. Both UK, Free French, KMT (and even neutrals like Iran) often gets a Lend Lease unit every turn. It’s incredible how much effect a few offensive units here and there can have…

      Other things I personally like:

      • Can use US to produce CA for UK in the Atlantic if needed. Have some CA’s ready 1-turn away from being produced
      • Reenforce Pacific Islands, esp. Philippines ASAP. Great for landing planes + it swings the income scale 6 IPP in Axis favour if lost to Japan
      • UK Seaplanes (Sunderlands) are superior to US Seaplanes (Catalinas). If you want US to have have Seaplanes, Lend Lease some with UK (you can always LL the money back…)
      • Don’t let your Pacific fleet get killed in the Japanese surprise attack…

    • RE: Specialist Infantry on the build charts..

      @thenorthman:

      So just seems strange then for Elite Marines and SNFL Marines to ALSO have it stated in their specific build notes that only can build two of them per turn. Because its redundant if they were only able to have two built per turn in the first place.

      Yes, I agree. The manual and reference charts are full of these “written curiosities”, that scream at you after reading a sentence for the 43rd time. It happens to me too  :wink:

    • RE: Specialist Infantry on the build charts..

      Countries can produce 2 of each Specialist Infantry per turn.

      So, per turn, US can produce :

      • 2 Airborne

      • 2 regular Marine

      • 2 US Marine

      • 2 Mountain

      Note: As mentioned, UK/FEC/France can only produce 1 Colonial per turn.

      Disclaimer: I asked Will/HBG a similar question some time ago…

    • RE: Country colored Industrial Complexes or generic?

      @Midnight_Reaper:

      HBG sells acrylic factory markers and injection molded factory sculpts.

      Acrylic Markers, $3.45 for 5
      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/HBG-Factory-Marker-Acrylic-x5_p_809.html

      One set of Injection Molded Factories, enough Majors and Minors for all of 1940 Global, $24.95 for 48
      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/1940-factory-set-48set_p_2806.html

      And if you want to buy singles of the Injection Molded Factories, you can do that as well, $3.45 for 5
      Major Factories http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/Battle-Pieces–GW36-Base-Set–Major-Factory-x5_p_2892.html
      Minor Factories http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/Battle-Pieces–GW36-Base-Set–Minor-factory-x5-_p_2778.html

      And now you know.

      -Midnight_Reaper

      Yes. I know  :roll:
      But how many are required for a complete set for GW36/39 ?
      You need more than for A&AG40, so you will have to supplement with singles. Eyeballing the content of the A&A set, you probably end up around the 50$ mark.

      It’s actually odd that HBG don’t sell a “GW36/39” package.

      Oh well, I’m happy with the acrylic generic ones  :-D

      What are the costs if you want to have the coloured facilities for all nations?
      (if you have done that calculation)  :mrgreen:

      From the recent newsletter, it seems HBG are working on a “1946 Expansion with overlay”:
      They expect it to be released this fall.

      Looks very interesting  :-)

      I bought the ‘generic’ ones:
      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/HBG-Factory-Marker-Acrylic-x5_p_809.html

      To me, they are perfect. I do not want real buildings (coloured or otherwise), the board is crowded enough as it it.

    • RE: German invasions of the Soviet Union and the Balkans

      @Chris_Henry:

      Am I misreading this? I didn’t think LL actually used ships in any way. It’s just something that you send from a major factory from your home country to a harbor in the receiver player’s country, without the use of ships, right?

      I definitely understand the point of Japan passing through the Suez while at peace with the UK, but I believe those Japanese unit(s) would still stay Japanese.

      You use a ‘virtual’ ship, to trace the shortest sea zone path to a port in the receiving country. (to account for submarines).
      So you’re right, no actual ships are used  :mrgreen:

    • RE: Partisans Expansion

      I like the rules, well researched and seems balanced.
      I also like the fact that the Expansions complement each other. Like this one and Turkey at War for example.

      It is one of those Expansions that goes into the nitty-gritty details though, so my group will probably not use it.

      When there are ‘conflicts’ I’m pretty sure the specific Expansion wins over this one, it being more general.

      The Spanish Civil War Expansion also uses Supply tokens.

      Recently received both the Base set I ordered (Coastal subs + TBDs) as well as the Flight Stands from IWNGU.

      Both are great and I highly recommend them both  :-)

      @KingKuba:

      Interesting strategy Munck! I never even considered attacking France on the first turn of 1939. I may have to look into trying that at some point, you know just to keep the other players honest. When you mention the North Sea, I assume you’re talking about a naval battle with the British correct?

      Yeah. Sinking the two UK Light Carriers on round 1 really opens up the Atlantic for subs and putting pressure on the UK.

      @KingKuba:

      1. Ok that makes sense for the 1st part. I am curious as to how you take France on the first turn if you’re starting from the 1939 start time.

      1. part of the turn: All eligible units attack Lorraine from Munich. Do not attack with any fast units into Poland etc. but non-combat them to Munich. 2. part of the turn: Attack Paris with all surviving units in Lorraine + all fast units in Munich.

      I only use part of Luftwaffe in the 2. part. The majority is used in the North See

    • RE: German invasions of the Soviet Union and the Balkans

      @KingKuba:

      1. How are you able to have Romania help you take Yugoslavia during round 2? Unless you take France on the first turn, you shouldn’t be able to have Romania under your control.

      2. How do you get lend-lease from Japan to Italy? I do not know for sure if you can or not, I am just wondering how you have been able to do so. I just assumed you couldn’t because Britain controls the Mediterranean routes (the only way to Italy’s ports). Unless of course, Italy has one or both Cairo/Gibraltar. Even then the Brits could easily cut off the supply path by dropping in sub fro interdiction or setting up a blockade.

      1. My current favourite strategy is to take France in round 1 using Germanys Blitzkrieg special ability.

      2. Two things are required for this to work: a: Italy must have declared war. b: Japan must be at peace with the Allies.

      When you LL, the ship that carries the unit is the originating countrys origin until it hit the receiving port. So, as Japan is at peace with the Allies, it can freely pass through Suez or the Strait of Gibraltar. UK can of cause declare war and stop this, but if doing so, Japan can conquer freely in the Pacific, so that’s not likely  :mrgreen:

      @thenorthman:

      Was that just a personal thing or was that in one of the expansions?  AM I just being blind? Also saw it has a limit of one per turn.  SO sounds like something from the game but just making sure….

      They originated from the Sealion expansion.

      @sjelso:

      Would be good to see some new sculps to replace the tokens/chips (i.e. heavy artillery, advanced subs, etc.).

      For advanced subs, Germany is the most likely (only?) country you will need. I use these, which are great:

    • RE: German invasions of the Soviet Union and the Balkans

      I usually have Italy focus on The Mediterranean, Gibraltar or Africa. I leave Greece & Yugoslavia to Germany. Yugoslavia falls in round 2 with help from aligned Romanian troops.
      For Italy to succeed, Lend Leasing from Germany (and Japan) is almost a must-have.

      For Russia, I see little benefit besides going after ‘Lebensraum’. Perhaps Caucasus, if you need a route into the Middle East.
      IMO, a key to “winning” Barbarossa is making sure your opponent have longer supply lines than you. The concept of “conquering Russia” is best buried along the other A&A baggage. It’s not doable unless the Russian player is playing like an a*se.

    • RE: Germany against the Netherlands; Japanese wiping the American navy

      @KingKuba:

      It is a good thing that Germany does get the French IPPs. Gives them some more units to place in preparation for Barbarossa. Speaking of Barbarossa I have a couple questions. I should probably start a new thread for this but oh well. Do you guys have Germany or Italy attack Yugoslavia and Greece if you attack them at all and how do you guys handle invading the Soviet Union? Do you guys only go for the Soviet territories that are apart of the Lebensraum victory objective, or do you look to conquer as much as possible?

      A great topic for a new thread  :-)

      Page 66, under the title “Free France”.

      “All IPP currently in the possession of the French player are surrendered to the Axis.”

      Fuck me. I’ve read that manual 500 times. How could I have missed that?

      Thanks for clearing that up  :mrgreen:

      @KingKuba:

      The rule for any major power is if your capital is taken, you must give up all IPPs to the bank. Only in the case of France do the IPPs go to the conqueror if Paris is taken.

      The last sentence about the case of France, can you provide a link or tell me where in the rules this is mentioned?

      Thanks in advance  :-)
