Garg, it also proved the merit in having an east-west railroad.  By the rest of Canada you mean Ontario I am sure wg.  It didn’t take long for Ontario the Great to send out her shock troops on our industrial railroad to grind the west under our JackBooted Heal!

LHoffman, there has been a bit more fighting in Canada over the years than you may know.  Ask a Frenchman about the Plains of Abraham.

Here you see a typical example, notice the nose pointing skyward……

Oh wait, he was just bitching because he was not informed about a concert…

Cromwell, it takes a big man to pull a mea culpa in regards to your one exchange with Grasshopper, I respect that.  I enjoy a good debate regardless of what side I take.  I debated in some history classes at university, we would flip a coin to see which side our group would take.  Interesting to debate for the other side, it really forces you to know both sides of the issue.

I like checking out links people provide, your link to Neo-Confederates is interesting.

Slavery is almost never defended, but it is usually denied as a primary cause of the American Civil War. Critics often accuse Neo-Confederates of “revisionism” and of acting as “apologists”.

That is a worry, that fighting for respect for your war dead you can give off the wrong impression.  You seem like an honourable person so don’t let your honour be allowed to be confused with some of the more negative images that might be conveyed un-intentionally.  Thanks for the good words of support, the thumbs down has been countered with a thumbs up.  I wonder if my thumbs down was from an American who just figures if a Canadian dares intrude on an conversation involving the US it must be to slag the US out of jealousy?

I grew up with half my tv and radio channels being American and I am much closer to Buffalo NY than any big city in Canada.  We are so close yet very different in our outlooks in relationship to the role of government etc.  Watching the debate in here is much like watching two brothers arguing over a girl who really isn’t all that pretty.  I suppose I am curious as to what all the fuss is about.  Fuss is probably a poor choice of words as I don’t intend to minimize feelings or importance of the topic but rather convey a certain lack of understanding.

Cromwell, you should tell us how you really feel about this and stop holding back your feelings.

LHoffman, speaking for myself, invested might not be the right choice of word

Now I wonder what somebody who actually really cared about this would be labelled, American perhaps?  wg

In this area the War of 1812 events are a big deal since many of the battles occurred around here and we CAN see America from our porches.  It’s fun, the local fort has reenactments with muskets and cannons.   Many Americans come over to participate in the events, lots of fun.  Nobody debates why we started fighting.  What we do celebrate is the start of the war exactly 200 years ago and the fact our two societies have been at peace and in fact friends for 198 years.

LHoffman, your rant is most welcome and funnier than hell, IMHO.  So you see a case in point, some Americans can’t stand the fact that other nations’ citizens have an opinion on what the US is doing or can do better.  Now as far as an inferiority complex, that does have or rather, did have some truth to it.   I think anyone in a situation where they look at somebody ‘bigger’ has a certain bit of envy.  But if anything, currently there is a certain smug self-satisfied feeling that we as Canadians feel we are doing better than the US on average.  The truth to that obviously can be debated, and perhaps should to highlight areas where each nation does well so perhaps the other might learn lessons from the other.  The bottom line is that only an idiot Canadian would wish anything negative to the US.  A bit over 70% of our exports go to the US, again, when the US sneezes, Canada catches a cold.  A bit less so now as we are diversifying our export destinations in 2002 it was 85% of our exports were US bound.  Again, it is wise to know as much as you can about your largest client.

Professional hockey this year I fear is a lost cause, much like the Maple Leafs.  I think a civil war in the league is in order.  The commish is not well liked in Canada, 2 seasons canceled in 8 years, and he is…gasp, Ahmerikan!  Now there is a conspiracy!  An American sent to run Canada’s favourite sport, by canceling it he has rendered Canadians powerless to resist the American hordes as we are in a hockey civil war…   Just because there is no proof is not proof it is NOT a conspiracy!

Sorry for the hijack, but I did mention civil war a few times… :-)

I do find it curious that some Canadians are so invested in this topic.

LHoffman, speaking for myself, invested might not be the right choice of word, interested would be more accurate.  As a Canadian, when I see Americans make a statement like that it comes across like “How dare a foreigner talk about us!”.  The destiny of Canada has and always will be tightly coupled to the US.  Since Canada is about 10% of the US’s size in economy and GDP, the interest between the two is highly asymmetric.  Moreover, 90% of our population is 100 miles or less from the US border so basically, our entire population is a border community to the US.

Our Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau said in 1969 at a US press club “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.”  Pierre Trudeau also famously said, “we in Canada are the mouse in bed with the elephant. When America sneezes, Canada catches a cold.”

Don’t take all Canadian interest in the US as nefarious, we already own you!  wg

I cant remember why i didn’t buy those .99 cents sunglasses from the dollar store while driving in a GMC Jimmy. Sounds like a good idea at the time, perhaps not.

IL, this is an example of trolling behaviour I find distasteful.

I know I know, your reply will be something along the lines of “Thou protestith too much”

I really hope you show up in Oshawa because I am going to punch you right in the mouth.  Not very politically correct of me but I am getting sick of you and your personal attacks on me.  You seem to have the support of the people who count, so I guess sooner or later I will vote with me feet and grant you the victory of driving me from this place.  I give up, you win IL.

Are we remembering the dead real good like now?  Gee, aren’t we glad we started debating why something happened 150 years ago rather than remember the fallen?  What lessons can be drawn if people can’t even agree as to what the war was about or why it was fought.

Debating if it was or was not slavery that triggered the war, calling people traitors, talk of treason, arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of the pin.  See how easy it is to split into opposing sides.  How about “God rest the souls of the people who died over differing ideas”…… Or we could argue about who was right and wrong.

    • RE: Are we too SOFT as a society?

It was a terrible event.  The sad thing is nothing will change after this event.  People will use this event for their cause, and the other side will also use this event for their cause.  The same arguments will be re-hashed.  Sadly, in a few years from now, there will be no new laws that might help reduce events like this if that is even possible.

Strange that the ‘right’ to own slaves was not listed as a reason for the US civil war.  Personally, I think it better to remember the sacrifices made rather than the reasons for it.  If you start to ‘discuss’ reasons then you are asking for one side to admit they were wrong.  Is it really that important that the ‘less right’ side of war admit that the other side was more right in order to remember the dead?  I say leave the debates in the classroom and just remember the fallen and endeavour to fight wars only under the most pressing of reasons.

If only the south would admit they were wrong for reasons 1 thru 9

If only the north would admit they were wrong for reasons 10-19

If only one side would admit they had more and better reasons than the other side.

Seems the dead were left out of the last 3 sentences, what is important here?

    • Unescorted transports can be attacked by partial fleet

I’m wondering if this rule change was noted by everyone but me until now?  Un-escorted transports can be attacked by one ship from a fleet passing thru a seazone containing containing them.  Page 11 “It is possible that some units may stop to attack while others continue moving through the sea zone”

Wow, I wish I had read a few more articles before I created this poll.  I’ve been following this situation for years as a local friend of mine is originally a Catholic from Syria.  So it’s basically the 10% minority Alawite who run Syria versus the majority Sunnis.  This article for me changes many things…provided it’s not a conspiracy… If this is true then its more like a cult inside the minority Alawites holding everyone hostage.  If true, then the end of the dictator must be much closer than I thought.

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20691206

It almost seems too good of a propaganda event for the rebels to be true.  Something like this could turn even his so called supporters against the regime.

Events in Syria are starting to occur with greater frequency.  It looks like it’s only a matter of time until yet another dictatorship ends.  Hopefully this nation can enter a new chapter of peace and co-existence.  It does not bode well but we can hope.

Honour, except if you ever see me roll a special bone coloured die……double check it.  It might be my one special dice that only has 1s, 2s and 3s!  A gag die, I never use it in a real game situation, just when I am ‘warming’ up a dice for an important defense roll like an AA shot.  Nothing like the look on the face of my opponent when ‘warm up’ and roll it 30 times and NEVER get over a 3…wry grin

It would be interesting to have an updated poll available.  I only play spring 42 now but can’t vote for it with this one.  Now, lets see who should do up a new poll.  I nominate……somebody besides myself!

Varn, you’re turning into a guru/master.  I’ve followed your games with Flip, you remind me of the borg with your ability to adapt, well done.  Hopefully once the drywall dust and paint settles from the home renovation and the insurance company has their fill with sending me to be poked and prodded by doctors I will get on tripleA and face your wrath!  Merry Christmas!

Hey Varn.  A local friend (not Flip) picked up a copy of 2nd edition, its sitting in my dining room but we have yet to play it, house renovations going a bit into overtime!  Nice looking and larger board but I won’t look at it more until my buddy comes over to play.  I don’t want to have an advantage because I studied the board for hours in his absence!

Why do you feel it’s not a replacement?  I’m glad you do, I hate relegating old versions to the dustbin of history.

Both versions are “playable” face-to-face in an afternoon, though by “playable” I really mean ending in round 5 with a mutual “it’s getting late, good game” and a handshake.

Ain’t that always the way brutha……
