    • RE: AAG40 FAQ

If Japan and Germany were both at war with UK, and Japan declared war on Russia (who is not at war with Germany/Italy), then I think it would be Legal.  The Russian neutrality-on-seperate-maps-rule restricts the Russian movements, not how other powers move in respect to Russia (I think)

    • US Superfortress/Heavy Bombers Combo

I want to make sure I have this right:

Using user selected national advantages, the USA selects superfortresses and their bombers are immune to AA fire.

In AARE, you can select which tech you are researching. The USA spends 40 ipc’s on T1 and gets heavy bombers by choice (stats are in their favour to get this on Turn 1).

AARE heavy bombers still roll 2 dice and do not have to pick one roll over the other, it was not updated in errata with this change, like later games were.

On Turn 1, they NCM their at start bomber to UK. They build 2 bombers on Turn 2, which reach UK by turn 3 NCM. Starting on T4 they have 3 bombers that can each do max damage (10 ipc) to Germany itself. The Germans don’t get to fire any AA and this game lacks interception rules. Germany never collects a single ipc again as the SBR’s are repeated each turn with new bombers arriving all the time, and the germans can do nothing at all about it.

Why is there no errata? Perhaps adopt the newer Heavy Bomber rules of roll 2 dice and pick one, and do not exempt superfortresses from AA fire on SBR’s (which makes that a weak advantage, so maybe it should be replaced altogether).

Did I miss something? Is there a defence against this?

    • RE: FLYER FOR 2ND EDITION E40 AND P40 IS OUT- SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2012

Correct.  Yours starts in 1941.  AAE40 from 2010 has a map twice that size and includes several new unit types (2 types of factory, tac bombers, cruisers, mech inf).  It also includes the French and Italians. Russia and USA are Neutral at the start of the game.  It is a much deeper game than the 1999 version (which is also great, and quicker to play).

    • RE: FLYER FOR 2ND EDITION E40 AND P40 IS OUT- SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2012

Your Europe 40 has one gameboard made by putting 2 gameboards together.  I’m sure it’s just inconsistant wording on WOTC’s part.  According to the parts lists above, AAP40 does not include any pieces either or a rulebook, as people have pointed out.  The pdfs clearly needed a little more proofreading.

EDIT:  AA Europe  (1999) has only one board.  Are you talking about AAE (1999) or AAE40 (2010)???

Hey, Europe 40 has a UK flag on the box now.  Neat.  I remember a few folks commenting on its absence last time around.

    • RE: Thailand as a player? Official HBG color for them?

I was refering to fitting them into G40. I need to pick up G39 from HBG.

Forgot to add that that during setup, the German units in Hungary and Romania should be switched to minors.

The controlling axis players may purchase only their own units in the purchase phase, if they wish.  They can decide in the Place New Units Phase which ones the minors will get.

As an afterthought, Hungary and Romania were larger contributers.  Maybe they can build 2 units per turn as long as at least one is an infantry.

And for the rule lawyers:  If the minor is building in a factory outside its home territory, their home territory must have been friendly at the start of the player turn. I.e. , no building Bulgarian units in Romania if Bulgaria is held by the allies. Bessarabia and Vyborg do not count as home territories of Romania and Finland for this rule.

Thanks for the kind words guys.  :-)

    • RE: The Indestructible Neutral Colored Units: Why??

      @Rhey:

I’ve been thinking of playing a game where you can only build IC’s on original owned territories. Whenever you capture a territory (wich doesn’t originaly belong to you) with an IC on it, that IC is destroyed. This way the German advance into Russia might be a little bit more difficult and would give it more of a historical feel to it (as supply lines back then were a major issue too).

I have yet to try it out tho.

It may hurt the Russians in the long run.  May I suggest, that when captured, a factory is given full 6 damage.  The captor can’t use it (as a variant to your house rule), so they won’t fix it, but at least the Russians only have to pay to repair, rather than replace it when and if they retake it.  Heavily damaging a facory on capture also reflects the heavy fighting in the cities that contain them.  Or maybe just do the 6 damage thing and allow the captor to use it if they fix it (perhaps they should be seen as reforming destroyed units there, as opposed to making new builds).  Whatever route you try, I’d be curious to hear how it goes.

      @wittman:

21st and Panzer Lehr were 2 different divisions.
Pz Lehr was near Le mans on the 6th and was  the strongest Panzer division in France, with 180 MkIVs and Panthers.
The  21st only had one good battalion of MkIVs, the other battalion was mostly made of old French tanks. It was also the only one to see action on D Day.

my bad mixed it up…I personaly prefer the Lehr Division led by Bayerlein but according to the topic I picked 21. PD by Generalleutnant Edgar Feuchtinger and mixed it up, you´re right. Thanks for letting me know.

Panzer Lehr was the 130th Panzer Division.

    • RE: Thailand as a player? Official HBG color for them?

I was thinking each minor could build 1 unit per turn, and be subsidized by the major power they are paired with (Germany, Italy [happened with Iraq] or Japan).  If they want a fighter, it can be done in one turn, with the major power covering the rest.  No BB’s, CV’s, CA’s or Strategic bombers for minors.

They must still be built in a factory.  The factory must be in or adjacent to their home country (or Malaya for Thailand if Japan prefers it to Indo China. Finland may build in Novgorod/Leningrad, if the Germans control it). I’m using HBG orange for Thailand.

The limit of 1 per turn came from a game where a major Germany factory was built in Romania.  10 Romanian units per turn was obviously not right.  So we decided that factory could produce 1 unit each for Romaina, and adjacent Hungary and Bulgaria.  The other 7 had to be German. The 1 per turn limit is per nation, not per applicable factory (but if the minor power contains a factory, it must build its units there). The money all comes from the same place, and major powers on both sides of the war provided aid to minor allies so it all works out (it’s also all purely cosmetic anyway and not remotely affecting mechanics, as the units count 100% as German, Italian or Japanese for movement and combat).  In the spirit of the rules though, on most turns the minors should be building 1 inf.  If it becomes a problem, maybe adding a ratio rule is in order.  2/3 of their combat units must be inf?

On the subject of mechanics, the scale of the game does not (IMO) require any rules for keeping Hungarian and Romanian units apart from each other, as found in many smaller scale games.  The only change we contemplated was with Bulgaria.  Bulgaria refused to declare war on the Soviet Union, so we considered not allowing them into Russia unless Russia declares war on Bulgaria.  We haven’t gone with this yet as it is a game of ‘what ifs’, and much of its charm is its simplicity.

Sorry for getting off topic, I guess I just should have said “I use HBG orange for Thailand”  :-D

    • RE: FRANCE and ANZAC COMBAT DICE - HELP us design them!

Maybe the sender forgot the customs forms.  Are you in Italy? Italy has some really odd rules for toys and games (they must be made of wood), but they don’t really enforce them anymore.  Like I said, I ship to Europe regularly with no issues or delays.  The only stories of long delays that I have heard are from Italy, but even then it is rare.  And even if you are in Italy, I really doubt it would happen to all your orders (but I do know of a few online sellers that won’t ship there now, because of non-delivery issues).  I think something else is the issue here.  When you do get your order, I’d be very interested to know the ship date as marked on the package.  I hope it works out for you.

    • RE: FRANCE and ANZAC COMBAT DICE - HELP us design them!

I can tell you I do a lot of shipping to Europe by mail (I’m in Canada).  I have never lost an order and it is very quick, unless sent by surface.  Even surface is usually about 6 weeks to Europe, and there is almost no savings in shipping a few dice by surface.  Typical airmail to Europe is 1-3 weeks, usually in the 1.5 range.

    • RE: Flagships

The German ship is signalling distress!  Its flag is upside down.  :-D

I was considering super battleships for Japan (and maybe USA) only.  The plan was:

30 cost  5/5/2.  Takes 3 hits to sink.  A functional port can repair only 1 hit per turn.  No limit on how many you can build.  If limited only to Japan (Yamato class), super battleships cannot move through the Panama canal.

Never tried it though, we always end up playing by the book. Â

Edit:  I think I may try some of your idea.  The first hit is ‘free’ and the second applies damage.  This means that even when going fresh into a battle while damaged it would take 2 hits to sink.  A 30 ipc unit needs to be tough.

    • RE: AAG40 FAQ

      @Cow:

You can load units in a hostile seazone if the seazone became hostile only because of your declaration of war on that turn

Where is this from? quote your rules please.

It’s in the Declaring War section of the rules, not the Transport section.

“During your Combat Move phase following the the entry of of into a state of war, your transports that are already in sea zones that have just become hostile may be loaded in those sea zones (but not in other hostile sea zones).  In effect, transports may be loaded in their initial sea zones for amphibious assaults before war is declared, while the sea zone is still friendly.”

This is from alpha 3, but it is also in the box on the right column on p15 of AAE40 (did not check p40, but I’m sure it’s there).

Also, to answer your other question, “Sea zones are either hostile or friendly.” is on p8 of the same book.  Hostile is defined as containing surface warships of a power that you are at war with.

      Hope that helps!

    • RE: Contested seazone question

You can only load in a contested seazone on your turn if you just made DOW that caused the seazone to become contested.  That’s clear in the rules (and probably worded much better :D).  That is obviously not the case here.  Option 1 is correct.  The transports can move 1 space out, load and return for an amphibious assault.  The US destroyer’s value here is that it is blocking German shore bombardment (which may well be worth its cost).
