BUT…be aware! Don’t go overboard…you don’t want to turn this lovely discussion board into a maze of broken up topics spread out everywhere. Sometimes trying to make things too simple actually makes things too complex.

Which is probably why things should just be left alone. ;-D

    • RE: What is your fav war board game?

While I haven’t played in many years and just got it for Christmas, I have to say Squad Leader. I like A&A because it’s simple enough to teach someone in a few minutes that you can get to playing relatively soon.

Just got the CD today! My only question about it so far is how to change the view of the screen. I can’t see the bottom of the screen. (The options for getting out of the game or combat or stuff like that.) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot and Merry Christmas to everyone.

Our game group has been looking to do this type of “Expansion” of the game board for some time. Is there places that will enlarge a copyrighted game board for you? Can you do this with low-end color printers and MSPaint? How do you make the .bmp’s bigger? I’d love to get a copy of the file if possible.

The copyrighted thing may be an issue. i really don’t know as I’ve never done it like that. Very costly.
I use a HP Deskjet 612C which is about as lowend as you can get and the copy comes out great. I print it out with MSPaint.
You can enlarge the bmp file with any graphics program that allows you to stretch to size. I’ll email you the file. It’s about 196k zipped up, but it unzips to a 14meg bmp.
None of the territories or seazones are marked, so you’ll have to do that, but it’s not hard at all.

    • Solitare A&A

About the ONLY thing I never cared for in A&A was the fact that you need at least 2 to play a game. Has anyone ever come up with solitare rules? I play solitare A&A all the time, but I can’t really call it that because I’m only rolling up a few battles to test different strategies. The only way to really acomplish this is to provide the best defense possible. For example what you would do against a certain strategy and not so much a limp resistance just to say one was put up. Any one else try this? I’d like to hear a few different ideas on this. Thanks.

      Thats about it….nothing too strange.

Ya know, its funny that you say that because I was seriously thinking of getting one of those German officer SS hats for when I play the Axis.

Have I got my hands on the right thing in A&A?

      comments?

I’ve never played the CD version of A&A, but Christmas is coming.
If you prefer chess to checkers, you should probably re-consider that. Being a serious chess player, (rating a shade under 1900) I thought the same thing too. Was I wrong. Checkers isn’t the easy game everyone thinks it is.
As for being right about A&A? Well, as I stated before I’ve never played the CD version, but the board version is great. I bought it in 1988 or 1989 and have played on and off since then. After playing D&D and various wargames since about 1979, I felt I needed a change. A&A was exactly what I needed at the time. The rules are simple enough and easy to understand and the game is very modifiable. You can tell this just by the number of expansions and scenarios there are for it. Hope you enjoy it.

    • RE: Axis and Allies CD

The thing that irks me about this is I just saw about 5 or 6 of Axis & Allies cds in the 10 dollar bin at a Media Play about 3 months ago. You think I could find one NOW?? You can get it bundled with 3 other games. One of the games is Panzer General II, another is one of the Army Men games. I’m holding off on buying it in case I get it for Christmas. If I don’t then I’ll get it even though I really don’t want the other games, but that’s the only place I can seem to find it.

MGI PhotoSuite for Windows 95. I don’t have anything else other than MS Paint and I use that to print out the bmp files. The good thing about PhotoSuite is it has a stretch to fit option. I’d do the regular A&A board like that, but the bigger you go the picture gets really fuzzy.

    • RE: Bigger Map

I printed out a file of an AA map last night. It’s not the official AA map, but one I found on a site. I wanna say I found it at Silex’s site. I just re-colored it, stretched it to fit and printed it out. Came out really nice. All I have to do is piece it together and mount it.
What I did with my World At War map is I pieced it together in to sections of four. Then I laminated it with clear contact paper. Now I am going to trim it and piece it together then I’m going to measure it and cut it in half and mount it to two pieces of 1/4" plywood so I can fold it. Should be nice when it’s finished.

      Jeff

    • RE: Bigger Map

I used 8 1/2 X 11 pages and put them together. They fit together great. I did an Axis & Allies map last night. Really came out well. I was going to take my board to a printer and have it professionally done, but I was quoted about three hundred dollars and decided against it. I may have found a cheaper price, but I knew the price would be in that neighborhood so I didn’t bother.

    • Bigger Map

I just printed out a World At War map from a file that I modified by resizing it. The map came out 57" X 50". It’s really great to see a bigger map. I should have resized it a little better, but it still looks pretty good. The only thing I have to do to it is label countries and sea zones. If anyone is interested in the file (196k zipped but 15mg unzipped) let me know and I’ll send it to them or if anyone knows where I can post it I’ll do that too. I’ll be doing an A&A map in the next few days.

I recently found this game and its evidently an un-official version of Axis & Allies. Anyone out there played this game? I don’t have the official CD version of A&A, but from what I’ve read and been told I’m not missing much. Any opinions?

I’d like to start playing A&A by email, but I really don’t know how. How do I go about this? It would seem kind of difficult, but I really don’t know. So if there’s anyone out there that can explain it to me SLOWLY I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

I haven’t seen the Europe @ War map available for down load, but I’ve heard it is good.

As for a back ground for your map, I’ve been studing on that a bit and I think Ive come up with a solution for me. I am going to atachit directly to our game table. I have a folding table that I am going to remove the top of and replace with a piece of plywood the same size as my map. If I need to take it some where I’ll fold it up and slide it in to my truck.

I printed out the map that I mentioned in a previous post. It’s about 6’ wide by 5’ high. It came out to forty 8 1/2 sheets. I’m gonna cut it and tape it together in a few days. All I have to do to it then is put the country labels and ipc values on it. I laid it out on my living toom floor and I gotta tell ya, I can’t WAIT to use it. I just may mount it to the back of a piece of panelling and see how that comes out. I EVENTUALLY would like to paint one on a 6’ X 5’ piece of 1/4" plywood.

      Is this map available?

      You said:
How are you enlarging the map? I am doing the same thing. I down loaded it and changed it to a bmp file, so that I could cut off some of the boxes and possibly modify the colors. I have printed it in black and white, well more like shades of grey. The one I printed is three feet tall and about five feet long, which is the size of our game table. It will be prety damn cool when I’m done.

Ahhhh, now THAT’s the size I’d like! What I’ve been doing is checking out different maps and playing around with their size I have converted all of them to bmp files after sizing them with Photoshop. It allows you to stretch it to size which is a real handy feature. I make them all 16 color so the resolution isn’t all that good, but I’m going to take a black marker and pretty up the edges a bit once I’ve printed it out. The size I seem to have the most of is
5437 x 5000. I like a really big play area. If this is too big, I may trim it down a bit. I also take the off the country names, IPC values and control marker icons so all I have left is a blank colored map. I’ve done a smaller one by printing it out and taping the sections together. Works really well. I just have to figure a way to get this map on a piece of wood that is big enough to hold the map full size, that I can fold and that is light enough to store for easy play. Ply wood is pretty much out of the question as it’s heavy. I may use the back of a piece of panelling. If anyone else has any suggestions, I’m open for anything. I’ve been wanting a bigger A&A board for years.

      Jeff

Anyone know where I can find the A&A Europe map? I have the first game and I also have the World at War variant by Xeno Games. I don’t have the map anymore, but found a pretty good on the net that I’m working on making larger. I’d just like to see what the map from the Europe game looks like. Any help is appreciated. Thanks very much.

I’ve been wanting a larger board for A&A for years. What I’ve done was taken some of the different map files that I’ve found and enlarged them with a grapics program. I use Photo Suite for Win 95. I found that any one of them works as long as it has a resize option and a Stretch To Fit New Size option. You will find that you will end up with some big files. You’ll also have to fiddle around with the clarity too. The bigger it gets, the more you’ll have to mess around with the picture. Hope this helps.
