@simon33 We’re setting up his first league PTV game as we speak. Sounds like I’m in for a challenge

@Argothair Max defense, when it’s a tie, kill UK, then AZ, then US, and kill my boats before planes.

@surfer said in Path to Victory League Discussion:
So played a few games and in the middle of a few more, so my sample size for PTV is small, but I have a few observations that i’m curious what the group thinks about.
a) Adding the SZ around Malaya really does nerf the Japanese threat on India. Only a prolonged build up can win there–which I think was the idea: to make a longer game, i.e. one that isn’t really decided until T14+…but that leads to my other point
b) Italy must be defended well by the Germans. In OOB or BM4, you can solely focus on Russia as Germany and just use the Italians as can openers. If the Allies nerf Italy, eh, annoying, but not game changing since Russia will fall soon.
–That doesn’t happen in PTV. Russia may fall, but barring bad play by the Russians (or maybe I’m just terrible with the Germans), Moscow will hold for 12 turns. There’s just a lot of territory and the Russians have enough IPCs to stay in the fight for awhile. Thus, the Allies have plenty of time to control the Med and nerf the Italians. Add to the fact that Italy is an extra space away from France and W. Germany–critical to getting defensive troops into place, and Italy becomes indefensibleIt seems the Axis got a triple whammy. No quick wins, and the added spaces make the defense of their areas that much harder, and yet the southern spaces are still easy to reach for the Allies. This means that it’s hard to get economic parity, and a long game that favors the Allies.
My point is that unlike OOB or BM4, it seems like there is a “formula” for the Allies to win PTV. Build up Russia, attack the Med, nerf the Italians, pick at the hard to defend Med landing zones, and wait until the money disparity allows you to just win attrition wars, which leads to overwhelming forces.
To stop this, the Germans have to spend Moscow invasion money early on bolstering Italy, which further delays Moscow falling and plays into the Allies hands.
I would say that Japan does ameliorate the above somewhat. They still cannot take India quickly, but they can grow rather large and dominant on the ocean, which could prevent an overwhelming force in the Med. But again, playing for the long game, the Allies just keep enough in the pacific to stay alive, nerf Italy and the game should go their way.
I agree with most of that, but I would say Axis can definitely win even if Italy is completely neutered. The 13 global VC rule helps with this. Normally if the Germans take all 3 Russian VCs you still need London or Egypt, which may be be impossible if the Allies have naval supremacy and there is no help from Italy. BUT, if Japan can get 6 VCs (one short of Pacific victory), then that’s an Axis win.

@Adam514 Averaging over a full round per day. Gotta love the pace of play

@axis-dominion I do legitimately like your positions. London falling and US getting original UK territories back from the axis and getting build infrastructure in places they almost never control in most games is another silver lining

@peirce Yeah the dice were rough but you came out firing with a good strategy. Life is a bit busy at the moment so not ready to start another one immediately, but I will ping you in a couple weeks or so.

@gamerman01 I think one per major dicing is appropriate…and now we know I’m not the only victim!
The site is call Parrot AI…I got a lifetime subscription like 2 years ago for $20 or something…then the site became useless for a while because they sped up the default playback speed and it still sounded terrible if you slowed it down manually, but now it’s back to pretty good quality.

@gamerman01 lol that probably wasn’t even a top 5 Peirce-themed meme that I generated, but not all are forum appropriate

@peirce I’ve already started thinking of words that rhyme with “mean reversion”

@gamerman01 Very interesting data, hopefully that will help some of mid tier folks scheme our way to the top…

And if the promised AI productivity boom actually materializes we should all have more free time and money to travel and reconstitute the league as an over the board league. Stucifer presciently already has the PTV board printed for us.

I will say if I was playing PtV low luck I can’t imagine Axis would get a bid. I would definitely want a bid to play Allies. I believe with a 0 bid you can be at 100% odds for Sealion on G3 with a naval buy G1 (CV, DD, tp) and 11-transport buy G2.
That’s with UK bringing the Gibraltar + Malta fighter back and building 18 infantry + a fighter for London.
This seems like a fairly damning assessment of ptv. Someone might want to think about a version 2.
More of a damning assessment of LL IMO. PTV is by far the most balanced and dynamic of the the 3 global variants.

@gamerman01 I’ve been practicing on the 1942 setup for an over the board tourney so at least getting familiar with the map again, if not the setup.

I’ll suggest the following: myself and @oysteilo
This is based on trying to make the teams even-ish based on ELO and @Daaras and I being brothers and not wanting to be on the same team.

Thanks, it was only a matter of time before I made PTV inspired move in OOB.

Gents, @oysteilo and I have agreed to concede at this point. Pacific is looking pretty hopeless. This was my first match on the OOB map in years, I didn’t expect to be able to compete against top notch competition. Fun time, thanks for the game.

@666 Desperate times call for desperate measures. It’s not looking good for me, but I at least have to see the map with a yellow WUS.
