    • RE: USS Indianapolis found!

      To tie this back to A&A …

      The cruiser sculpt for the US Navy is based on the US Navy’s Portland class heavy cruisers (CA). The US built two ships to that plan: USS Portland CA-33 and USS Indianapolis CA-35.

      So if you get lucky and sink a US cruiser on it’s way to the Philippines with an IJN submarine, you just may have sent Quinn adrift with the sharks…

    • RE: Is it idiotic for UK not to attack France?

      @axis_roll:

      @Argothair:

      The TripleA bid rules are pretty simple:

      Auction off the right to play with the Axis by saying “I’ll take the Allies if you give me a bid of 15 IPC…”, “No, but I’ll take the Allies if you give me a bid of 14 IPC…”, “No way, man, because I’ll play the Allies with a bid of only 13 IPC…” until someone says “OK, fine, you can play the Allies with that bid” because they don’t want to bid any lower.

      However much IPC you collect with your bid, you can split any way you like among your nations, as any combination of cash and/or pre-placed units that hit the board on round 0, subject to the following restrictions:

      (1) You can’t buy more than one unit per territory or sea zone
      (2) You can’t place a nation’s unit in a territory or sea zone where that nation doesn’t already have at least one unit.

      That’s pretty much it! You can spend your money on whatever you want, including bombers and eastern european tanks and things, but the bid is usually lower than it would be under Chicago rules, so if you do buy a bomber, that’s most of your bid right there.

      Funny, the axis have a better chance to win, so it would make sense to bid an increasing amount of units to take the stronger side.  I know this bid system has been around for a while, but it is seems so counter intuiative to me.

      Thinking about this comment, imagining how this would go:

      “I’ll play the Axis against an Allied bid of 12.”
      “No way, I’ll play the Axis against an Allied bid of 14.”
      “Chump change, I’ll play Axis against an Allied bid of 15.”
      “All right, I’ll take the Allies with a 15 bid.”

    • RE: Looking for Cardboard Axis Minors + Minor Allies Custom Roundels from HBG

      @Wolf555:

      Does anybody know where to get the Cardboard Axis Minors + Minor Allies Custom Roundels from HBG, preferably in Europe ?
      I was told by HBG they won’t be restocked  :-(

      HBG is probably discontinuing the cardboard roundels because HBG has started making acrylic roundels instead. I looked at the sets you linked. There were roundels for Finland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Thailand, Poland, Dutch, Communist Chinese, and Nationalist Chinese. If you look in the Roundels section of HBG’s website, they list areas (e.g. Asia, Europe, etc…). If you go into the sections for Europe and for Asia, you will find that HBG has at least one set of acrylic roundels, for all of the above named countries. All of these sets were marked as being in stock for me just now.

      So, it’s not that HBG doesn’t make roundels for those countries anymore. It’s that HBG doesn’t sell cardboards roundels in multi-country sets anymore.

      I hope this helps.

    • RE: Sculpts

      Two things I would add to my above:

      The infantry pieces in 1941 are identical to the infantry in the rest of the game (excepting color change over the years e.g. Germany gray to black, UK tan to green to tan, etc). While that means you can chuck them into your 42.2 or your 40.2 with no problems, it also means that they can’t really be used to denote elite or special units without modifying them.

      Krieghund was kind enough to answer a thread over on Larry’s forum with a list of all of the sculpt choices for all the powers in all the games, from original A&A Europe to now. I don’t have the mojo to post clickable links, but you can find it in the General Discussion section titled: “Anyone with info on sculpts?”.

      That’s the master list for everything, at least officially.

    • RE: Game Balance & Capturing Capitols

      @Nowhere:

      @zooooma:

      Hello.  I’m looking forward to trying this version, but have some questions:

      1 - Is the “Optional Shorter Game” balanced (1 captured capitol to win).

      I figure this version is probably balanced if it is nearly impossible for either side to recover from the loss of any capitol.

      2 - Is Operation Sea Lion viable in this version?

      That is, can it be done at all (given reasonable Allied play)?  Also, if so, can the Axis still win the war if Germany does take England?

      Cheers!

      1. You’re probably looking at giving this option as a quicker win for the Axis than the Allies… what this really spells out is “The Axis wins when Moscow falls”… for the Allies to take either Berlin or Tokyo will be more of a chore than for Germany to take Moscow.

      2. I’d say no. At least not as a Kill Britain First strategy. Operation Sea Lion pretty much means you need Germany to purchase a fleet… the problem is the key-word “purchase”, which is pretty-much a non-existent thing in 1941. Money is very hard to come by in 1941, its probably the #1 factor that makes this game’s playtime much shorter than other versions because you can’t replace losses like you can in other games, and you can’t fundamentally change the nature of your nation’s setup with purchases (like turn Germany into a naval power).

      One thing to note about the “take one capital to win” shorter game is that there’s a wrinkle - taking Moscow doesn’t count. The full quote from page 6 of the rule book is:

      Optional Shorter Game
      Capture One Enemy Capital: If the Allies control either Berlin or Tokyo at the end of the Japanese player’s turn, they win the war. If the Axis controls either Washington or London at the end of the end of the United States player’s turn, they win the war.

      (emphasis added)

      I figured I would point that out. I think it makes a difference in how you approach winning if taking Moscow does not net you the game, just some cash and territory value.

      This also ties into the viability of doing Sealion as Germany - as I don’t think Japan is going to take Washington for the win…

      I did up some rules for adding Artillery to 1941, would you fine gentlemen be interested in them?

    • RE: Sculpts

      BJN,

      You want to know how many of what sculpts are in A&A 1941? You’re in luck as I happen to already have a list.

      Each country gets the same number of pieces:
      Infantry 8, Tank 5, Fighter 4, Bomber 2, Carrier 2, Battleship 2, Destroyer 2, Submarine 3, and Transport 4.

      What sculpts (piece shapes) do you get?

      There is one sculpt for each type of unit for the Allied powers and one for the Axis powers, with the exception of the Infantry sculpts:

      Allies
      Infantry-national “fighting man” (which is the same for each country but unique to that country), Tank USSR’s IS-2 Stalin,
      Fighter USA’s P-40 Warhawk, Bomber UK’s Lancaster,
      Carrier USSR’s Kostromitinova class (never built in real life), Battleship UK’s Admiral class (HMS Hood),
      Destroyer USA’s Sumner class, Submarine UK’s U / Undine class, and Transport UK/Canada’s Fort class.

      Axis
      Infantry-national “fighting man”, Tank Germany’s Tiger I,
      Fighter Germany’s Fw-190, Bomber Germany’s He-111,
      Carrier Japanese Akagi class, Battleship Japanese Kongo class,
      Destroyer Japanese Akizuki class, Submarine Japanese Kaichu type, and Transport Japanese Yamazuki Maru class.
