      In any event, then, I will scramble all 3 fighters from UK to sz 109 in defense of the DD and Transport there.

      Just wanted to point out a couple of things - I have the ability to scramble fighters from the UK into SZ 109 or SZ 110 and I can also scramble one fighter to SZ 111. I wanted to give you a chance to re-do your attacks, if you want, since I wasn’t sure you saw that.

      Since its just a friendly game, I want to make sure we keep it that way :)

      I’d be up for a Global game if you are interested…I have used the PBEM a few times on Triple-A - the key is making sure both people are using the same version of the software and you have a good e-mail address. Other than that, the dice rolling is done for you and you just e-mail each other the map file.

      Interesting thought - to be honest, I am not sure I looked at using a calculator for purchasing purposes - but with SBR and such, I could see where that might come in handy.

      We always looked at it through the lens of using something like that to help people determine how much attack or defense they needed for a particular battle. That, I believe, is still something that will probably never be allowed.

      So how many actually played in the tournaments?

      These are not official numbers, but, from what I recall with the tickets that came in and the brackets that we set up:

      A&A “Classic” - single elimination tournament had 8 teams (14-16 players - which, quite honestly, shocked the HECK out of us. I believe there were a couple of ‘teams’ that were solo players)

      A&A 1942 - single elimination with a twist had 12 teams (18-20 players) - again, we had several solo players. For this tournament, we had the 6 winners advance and randomly brought back in 2 of the losers of the first round (as Dave had pointed out). This set-up was agreed to by all the players in the tournament. It also proves that Greg can and will compromise needed and offer the chance the for the players themselves to develop a tournament format.

      A&A 50 - single elmination after 4 ‘qualifying’ rounds. Top winners (based on VC/IPC) from the qualifying games roll up into the top 8 for single elimination. Here we had around 12-15 unique teams that participated in the qualifying rounds (24-30 total players).

      A&A Global - single elimination - GHR - please correct me on this, but I think we had a total of six teams play - there was some sort of bye involved there, but I do not remember exactly how that worked. But 6 teams - with a total of about 12-14 players overall - I am not sure any team played with 3 people, but I also am pretty sure no one played alone)

      We actually had a truckload of people also play A&A Minis of all kinds - mostly War at Sea. Turnout there was amazing.

      Keep in mind that the victory conditions format for the tournaments at GenCon are not exactly the OOB conditions.

      The 1942 tournament was played for 5 hours and you just needed to win the VC count (7-6 or greater). However, since time was limited, it is probable that you have to hit back at the Axis at a faster rate than ‘normal’. The Allies do not have the luxury of having a strategy that wins them the game after 7, 8 or 9 rounds. There will not be enough time for that (in almost all cases).

      We found that the bid for the first round of the tournament (6 games) was pretty low, on average and then went up from there as players realized what I think we all have been saying - that the Axis have an advantage in this game.

      That being said, a bid of 10-12 is still quite a bit - but, if that is what it takes to balance the game (again, in the format we use at GenCon) so be it.

      I will say that overall, feedback was very positive about the game itself. It actually clocked in at $44 at the conference, which I think is not a bad price point at all.

      During the first two plays, it seemed obvious that UK should throw everything at the fleet off E. Indies - it is about a 60% win chance. However, both games ended in Allied losses - so I am left to wonder, maybe that isn’t the best use of the fleet after all.

      The problem is that if it goes as expected, you might have one plane left - no ships to protect whatever transports you have out there. Maybe not a huge problem. If the battle goes against you though (as it did in one game), I think UK is in a lot of trouble.

      What is difficult is making that first purchase for UK in India. If I knew my attack would work, buying a carrier and dd would make sense. You can land your surviving fighter on it, and if you position the Russian fighter, you can land it too - at least for one turn. Then, on turn 2, you could add to that fleet - I don’t think Japan could get through a 5-6 unit fleet AND have enough to take India as well? I do not have the numbers in front of me…

      This line sums it up:

      In other words, the total number of air defense dice rolled is three times the number of AAA units, or the number of attacking air units, whichever is the lesser.

      That is what I was saying before.

      Each AA gun in a territory can fire UP TO 3 times. However, you do not get to fire 10 times at each fighter if you happen to have 10 AA guns.

      In older versions, one AAA gun could fire at an infinite number of planes attacking that territory. This new rule is more realistic by having the limit.

      Some examples might help:

      1. I have 1 AAA gun and I am being attacked by 2 planes - roll 2 AA shots
      2. I have 1 AAA gun and I am being attacked by 5 planes - roll 3 AA shots
      3. I have 2 AAA guns and I am being attacked by 2 planes - roll 2 AA shots
      4. I have 2 AAA guns and I am being attacked by 5 planes - roll 5 AA shots
      5. I have 173 AAA guns and I am being attaked by 3 planes - roll 3 AA shots

      I believe with these guns as wll, the side attacking with the planes decides which planes (fighters or bombers if there is a mix) get hit.

      The other key differene of course is that the AAA gun can now be taken as a casualty during normal combat.

      Yes, I will try to follow all the rules this game :)

      I believe is using overwhelming force with air units if at all possible. Some would argue (maybe correctly) that I let possible options to kill units go unfulfilled - but, I do not like risking expensive units on battles where they have too high a chance of being killed. I would rather punish something I am attacking - kill it in one round - and move on.

      I came close with Italy again wanting to attack Malta, but decided to try something different…
