    • RE: Dusting off Operation:Hollywood..Will kill America first be an option like inAAR

That is some time spent at work planning this!

If something goes wrong after you move the German fleet to western Gibraltar it can always move into the Med using the land units to take Africa if Italy has not.

To get Americas attention in the Pacific Japan can do something obnoxious always……

My favorite strategy against the Americans is blocking them.  They can use it against the landing Germans.  Having the Italian Navy and air force near by helps open it up.

Since the strategy has such as excellent fall back into the Med I might not be able to resist trying.

    • RE: Russia facing Sea Lion and Barbarossa strategies

      Nice summaries Hobbs

One lesson I’m seeing is Sea Lion is costly, even when it is successful.

Another is the big stack of Russians better be darned sure they can’t be killed by a large attacking force if the square they’re in isn’t important.

Interesting about the American landings.  Do you think the Italy first strategy would have gotten better results?

    • RE: USSR Invasion

      Wild Bill,

sometimes I get my stack of tanks and mech inf close to Moscow and then they’re not enough.  As my lines have stretched out Russia fell back and built strength.

Them 10, 15 units of mine can’t attack Moscow.  They can however capture another capital, India.  At least they can turtle India back into itself when suddenly a country with an income of 16 or less if Japan has been doing its job has two enemies.

What a few turns earlier might have been a Japanese attack on India that failed has become an attack against an India weakened by the Germans or oddly enough a German attack.

Oddly enough no Russian player has ever chased my German tanks to India.  If they do I would slow them by dropping a mech infantry behind me.  Sometimes Germany has an empty territory in front of them and really could get the jump on the Russians.

If Russia attacks Germany fine.  They have a long march from Russia back towards Berlin.  It takes Germany 2 turns, two squares, to recover 50 pointsish of units on the eastern front.  Plus it has fallen back towards its supply base getting stronger that way also while Russia suddenly is further from the complexes building their new units.

      I rambled, I’m sorry

    • Capitol loss in game not as bad as real life?

The capitals which fell in real life were Paris, Rome, Berlin, and Tokyo.

When Paris fell the French territories in Europe and North Africa surrendered.  In some cases the units themselves changed sides and opposed their old Allies.

Italy surrendered the first chance they got.  Their army came apart.  The Germans even felt the need to bomb their navy.

Germany’s capital fell to the Russians and an official surrender was signed.  It isn’t like German forces fought to retake it from the Russians.

Tokyo surrendered to the Americans on the Missouri after the fire and nuclear bombing campaigns.  W/O looking it up I assume as many Japanese infantrymen were on the Asian mainland as Japan.  They just quit existing.

Turning over your income but keeping your units available seems reasonable.

    • RE: Global rules?

The “Global” rules are in the back of the Europe rule book if that was the question.

My scanner may still work.  If I scan the last few pages and upload them to flickr think I would get sued?

    • Axis must send a couple Italian units into Russia!

Thanks to the turn order Italy then German can conduct a can opener type blitzkrieg type attack usually with Russian as the victim.

Italy’s National Objectives lie in the Med and Africa.  They still should send a couple mech infantry and tanks into Russia.  These can open up Russia’s line allowing German tanks and mech to pour through the next turn.  Usually a good Russian player won’t let his capital fall this way but by merely pressuring it you limit Russia’s flexibility.

ALSO Italy can take a square and then on the next German turn they can move in with not only their infantry and tanks but also their any good defending planes.

This has to be worth a 20IPC investment.

    • DO NOT retake the Capital of the UK, France or Italy just to hand the IPCs back

It is considerably better for the enemy to trade the Capital territories of one of your Allies than it is for you to take it back only to loose it your next turn.

Example.  On turn UK6 England takes back France with a couple infantry.  All the French territories in Africa you have liberated return to French control and yay France gets some free infantry.  Italy purposely does not take it back on their turn.  France then collects their 19 bucks on France6.

Well come Germany 7 they are going to just roll back in and retake it and collect the 19 bucks.  Also the French territories England and America may have liberated from the Italians or Germans do not collect you money until France goes again.

You must retake them capitals with sufficient force to hold them through the next attack or have a darned good reason its soo important.

    • RE: Which would you rather have a mech inf and tank or 3 inf and 1 dollar left over

It really does depend on the situation.  Need to hurry folks to a front a few turns away?  Buy the mech inf and tank.

Landing on an island and have one transport?  Buy a tank and inf.  Best bang after suffering 1 casualty.

Defending and have only 9 bucks? Lets see
      3 Infantry……
1 avg hit 1st round of defense, lets say you loose one…
.67 hits second round, loose another…
.33 hits last round, loose the last
      Gives you 2 hits.

      Tank and inf defending…
.5+.33=.83 hits first round, loose one…
.5 hits second round, loose one.
      1.33 hits total

Over the course of this game the map is soooo big I love the speed of the tank.  They also defend well in captured territories and on transports or where your build capacity is limited tanks gain importance.

      Transport attack math
      1 artillery 1 inf
.67 hits first round, loose inf
.33 hits second round, loose artillery.
      avg 1 hit.

      1 tank 1 inf
      .5 + .33 = .83 hits 1st round, loose the inf (.33)
      .5 second round, loose one
      1.33 hits.

It DOES cost more to build the tank and inf though.

With Germany my infantry/art/mech/tank purchase rate is
6inf, 1 art, 1 mech, 1 tank.  I LOVE the fast moving tanks.  Sometimes I plop 3 tanks down in Lenningrad if there is a big attack pending the next turn.

      Russia?
Probably 8 inf, 1 art, 1 mech.  Sometimes I build a tank.  Perhaps .5 tanks per turn lol.

    • RE: What am I missing vs. America?

If America spends all 82 dollars in the Atlantic then I’m a thrilled Japanese player because I remember all the “imbalances” of Pac40, plus America isn’t spending 50 bucks a turn to come kill me!

It does take a bit to hurt America.  All I can ever accomplish are hit and run type attacks which are more for stalling America like Gargantua was talking about.  The US pacific fleet heads south to take back the DEI for India I land in Alaska pretending to threaten the West Coast.

America lands in Gibralter suck them one square into the Med to fight Italian Destroyers and HOPEFULLY dent their fleet with tons of German air or at least have Germany pay attention and reinforce Italy.

Just is hard to do anything to North America that really hurts them.  Then again America has to ship everything they make across the world

    • RE: Germay can force Sea Lion turn three!

You can probably take england with that build i agree.

I also agree the eastern front is a little soft.

If i am playing america against you i am considering the merits of taking back england on US 3 or 4 depending on when japan attacks.

Putting off the japanes attack leads to a strong india and australia. Might lead japan to attack russia also to distract the bear. Leaving more breathing room for india and the aussies.

America has to react to your landings. Taking england back with ten inf landing is a looser. Can the 150 points they have to place by US 4 get them a force to retake england? 7 transports and 14 sea units seems realistic. With a couple naval units and something left over for the next turn.

Hmmm…. Freeze germany by threatening italy with a turn 4 or 5 anzio? The germans have spent their money landing in england.  Italians better be good using destroyers to to block naval landimg approaches.

Interesting strategy u have. What do u think japan can do to help the most?

I like threatening sea lion as the germans. UK in the game i am playing now once again has to defend itself against sea lion. Meanwhile germany inches closer to moscow.

    • Can a carrier be chosen as a casualty if it sentences a plane to death?

See of i can summarize the situation.

If the germans expend full movement of a carrier and two planes to attack an american fleet of a battleship and destroyer in the mid atlantic, zone 102 for example, can the germans choose their carrier as the first casualty? This dooms the german planes to certain death.

    • RE: Soviet Victory

Nice strategic move seeing you could buy the carrier to get your plane into the battle!  Will have to remember this one for my bag of tricks.

My buddy will sneak in that “retreat to any square you attacked from” move to get his Russian inf around the board if I flank them.

    • How do you space your european american transport fleet out?

Still havent played my ‘A’ game with america. As an Allied nation america has to react to the axis. My favoried idea in the game is to build an atlantic navy to obtain control of that sea then split income to go after japan typically after round four.

Do you all build one LARGE group of maybe ten transports in the atlantic with the idea of staging units in morocco paralyzing germany with the threat of an italian takeover then landing in france or norway in mass?

Or do you try to split your transports into two groups. Five bringing land units to england every round, the other five reapetedly dropping the precious turn’s units onto europe?

My idea is airpower makes the second theory more attractive because a smaller landing force can take back any territory. Less than six planes for support go for the mass landing.

    • RE: I got beat by the Axis

Italy is the weak problem child for the Axis.

If japan went after australia and the americans stayed KGF doing nothing to help directly or indirectly we would laugh and say of course Australia falls to the full power of Japan.

Same with America and Italy. If Germany is slow to react Italy falls to America. If Germany puts 10inf and a couple fighters there it probably doesnt fall. Then again thats ten fewer troops pushing into Russia….decisions decisions…

    • RE: Kill Japan First?

I have been wanting to play that game with america. If japan goes all out after India it falls into the strategy even better.

I THINK the US could pump troops from alaska into siberia threatening all kinds of stuff if that japanese navy wanders too far south.

If the imperial navy stays near japan sending only a minor amount of troops to the DEI India’s air force and modest navy become more relevant. The round 4 clash between the imperial navy and the american fleet should be pretty even and america wins an even trade.

In the atlantic would you send a bomber to england and offer a supporting destroyer and transport a turn? The British navy better have their stuff together or else germany……

Dont be afraid to react to the allies. If england builds heavy in africa on uk1 build a couple german transports and maybe that carrier. You can threaten sea lion and take lenningrad.

Some games end up with the germans concentrating on keeping the british and americans off their shores and the soviets having to kill random japanese attacks at them through siberia and china. Lord forbid india falls lol.

If japan can take india and either through a transport fleet or the usual factory in east china get another ten units a turn on the board they can beat the russians if america is going 100% kgf.

Retaking Scotland in force is a poison pill for the UK.

One of my buddies made an excellent hit and fade attack on my Scottish forces getting 6 kills to 0 then pulling out leaving me two left.  Then he pulls back to London for defense against my next landing there.

Wasn’t the US income in the Classic game 36IPC?  With 24IPC one hit Battleships to boot!

IT is a ton of money.  Germany can get into the sixties.  Italy in our games has been tapping thirty itself.  Japan is all over the place.  Think I need to work out my Japanese strategy better, Make some DEI money while gaining territories in Russia
