    • Most air units you've had as America?

While I drive to work I’ve been planning my next game with the U.S.

What’s the most planes you all have owned as the U.S. and won a decently played game?

I was thinking about that plane heavy U.S. talk a few posts back.  I was thinking with two or three carriers in the Atlantic another six planes and a couple bombers would be nice for reaching out and eliminating the German or Italian fleets

So 3 rounds, 156 IPC to spend for America, if the game goes as usual I was thinking about going Europe first….

6 Fighters - 60 bucks (leaves me with extra fighters and bombers from the mainland)
      3 Carriers - 48 bucks
      1 Destroyer - 8 bucks
      3 transports - 21 bucks
      1 mech, 1 art - 8 bucks
      2 inf - 6 bucks

Then round 4 being prepared to dump perhaps fifty of my 80IPC into the Pacific.

I think i moved some of the American units from the west coast to Hawaii on my sheets. If anyone finds other mistakes let me know.

Neat use of the Italians in Russia.  I keep picturing them forcing an issue with that staggered attack in Southern Russia somehow.

Now I want to be Germany in our next game!

      Erratica set up.

Agreed Total Unit Value doesn’t tell the whole story and round 1 can be terrible for the European Allies.

Neat idea Mino.  I miss playing on the PC where them things are tracked for me.  If I’m every forced to be just ANZAC in a game perhaps I’ll try to keep track of everyone’s units lol.

Axis victories seem to rely on forcing the Allies into sacrificing units trying to catch up on initiative.  Nothing like having to give up some units to protect your assets.

Guess that crazy blitz through the Ardennes didn’t work right for Germany this time.

What did Italy do with all the money?

      Allies: 1887

      Not Counting Complexes and Bases
      Axis: 1128
      Allies: 1170

Consider this semi-official.  I made an Excel sheet for set up.  I’m sure someplace in there I inverted Mech Infanty and Tanks lol.

One of these is sure to be the right link for Mediafire.  I don’t use it much

See any mistakes let me know.  I did a neat thing with GIMP and copied the German set up over a Panther Tank pic set to 20% Opacity.  Soon as I hunt down any typos I might try to make it look good.

    • RE: Can't win a Global game with Sea Lion

It has been a day or two now but I can give the generals of my last Japan strategy:

Previous to my turn India took a couple of the DEI.  Russian consolidated back a square from me.

J1 Filled all three transports and move them down south unloading in French Indo China and one of the “K” Chinese territories.  Conduct the usual offensive moves in China.  Built a couple more transports.  Since the Russians backed off I walked my guys from Manchuria north into….?Amur? I think it is.  My airplanes mostly parked south of Hong Kong.  The Navy was split into Japan and FIC fleets.

US 1 they did an odd thing consolidating some land forces and a couple airplanes on Wake like they were teasing me.

      Russia2 they sat there.

India2 saw them build an aircraft carrier of all things.  Japan’s land units were outnumbered on all fronts so I guess they felt safe.  India also took another Island and readied its land forces for retaking the Burma road when they could w/o starting the war.  Australia did the usual Island landing.

J2 I took Malaya, landed on the fortified territories east of India with much air support.  I took the Philippines also for some reason and sunk the Indian transport fleet.  My new transports moved south also dropping in Kwangtung (Hong Kong) and southern China again with minimal naval protection.  I took the Burma road square again and one other Chinese territory.

US2, reinforced their Wake Island.  It was starting to look pretty intimidating.  Like Japan would actually have to concentrate on taking it.

Russia3 they sat there.  I think dude sent a couple Inf towards China.
India3, their fleet attacked my FIC fleet.  This went poorly for me.  Both Navies were annihilated.  The Allies were thrilled hooting and hollering, India had to land a couple planes in Java.  They built land units, took back a territory in south asia.

Japan3 I built a major factory in Malaya.  It was only marginally closer to India than Kwangtung but boy did it get ppl’s attention.  I also took more of Siberia unopposed.

Australia got their bonus.  Moved their planes to the DEI I think it was.  My transports noticed all this air power!  Both my AC’s and my remaining BB were up in Japan.  The US was going Europe heavy but had a reasonable Fleet in or near Hawaii.  They accomplished little US3

India4 they took back another territory. built land units.

J4 built my ten ppl in Malaya and marched forward.  Also sacrificed a transport to land in Alaska as the US had too many units in the East.  This had the desired effect of putting their fleet off Alaska from Hawaii and buying me some breathing room.

You get the idea.  The complex in Malaya just seems soo much more threatening.  I goofed with my Navy against the Indians stretching them a bit too thin with that Philippines money grab.  My Navy off Japan isn’t too strong but China is under control and I have like two transports up there replacing lost units in China and more or less gaining ground on the Soviets.

      @calvinhobbesliker:

      @marechallannes:

An US-player spending every IPC in the northern atlantic to reinforce the UK, invading France and North Africa by the way.

If this is happening, why is Japan not doing anything?

darned right. Japan needs to look threatening at the very least.  I tend to talk a little trash when i play Japan in this version. Something to attract allied attention off Germany.

My Japan was quite explosive in the older versions. Think i am finally up to specs in this one after our last game

    • RE: 1941 1942 or other short game set up ideas?

Well the U.S. didn’t exactly jump to war with Germany lol.

I was being a little off the cuff with the turn 20 crack.  I could live with turn 4 or 6 also.  Either would simulate a 1942 or 1943 U.S. declaration of war.

Just want to give the Japanese some reason to attack Hawaii like FDR did.  If the Japanese waited until January 42 to attack I be the Arizona would still have been sitting there.

    • 1941 1942 or other short game set up ideas?

I love Global 40.  It is a big long game that even with the most dedicated opponent takes two or more nights to finish.  For that reason I still have my home made 50th Anniversary game.

Any rumors of alternate Larry Harris set ups to start Global “more into the war”?

An early 41 start would have the political situation of turn 3 of the 1940 Global game.  The Russians can’t attack Germany, Japan can choose to start the war with the US on their terms.

Tons of ideas are in my mind.

1.Make the US leave at least one Battleship in Hawaii with a turn 2 declaration of war on Japan.  If the US moves their Battleship they’re forced to be neutral until attacked or turn 20.

2.Put a British infantry and airplane in Malta.

3.Give the Italians a damaged Battleship in a non-sea base square to start the game.  Their navy wasn’t in the best shape and that would make them choose between escorting them transports to Africa or waiting for the Littoro to repair next turn.

4.For a 1IPC cost allow up to 6 IPC US lend lease to Russia with a German sub D6 roll at reducing it IF the sub is loose in the North Atlantic. It would cost America 7 of its IPCs to send 6 IPCs to Russia because escorting them jeeps across the Atlantic did cost something.

5.Give the Russians a +1 to their dice rolls round one and perhaps two.  This would simulate the purge and give the Germans some incentive to hurry in.  Attacking Russian infantry would still have to hit on 1 I suppose but no artillery support.

Hmmm, I’m going to go join the Larry Harris board and post this.

Any ideas or rumors a 42 start is in the works?  My friends really love the game but our 5 player games take a long time since its difficult to get everyone over the same night.

    • RE: USA Too many IPCs? Too much Power?

Some US and Japanese players can virtually ignore the other for several turns.

if i am America and am heck bent on retaking england it really does not concern me if Japan takes hawaii. I will just build enough land units in the western US.

As Japan I play this suck America close game if the do build in the Pacific.  The Carolines make it a little more difficult to ignore America in Global.

    • RE: New player country pick

i believe a combination of the US and France or China would be good. A few turns of dice rolling and then some buying.

If the newb seems up for it Russia is pretty fun. Not much naval strategy to worry about and japan probably attacks them

    • American strategies in the Pacific?

Occasionally in our multi player games when a lucky stud of a tactician plays japan or when the German player retards his advancement too much with repeated ill advised sealions it would be great to slow down the Japanese. Anyone have favorite American tactics for that?

So far i have seen a US6 continual transport chain of units pumping from Alaska into Siberia, Russian national objective be damned for six units a turn worth of help.

Also in the last game the united states chose to fortify a couple of their islands pre war. By putting four or six infantry and four fighters on a worthless island japans ability to spread its transport fleet around was hindered AND Japan never wants to dedicate the resources to killing them knstead of taking a juicy target.

    • RE: Sealion counter

IF I were Japan and Germany took UK on G2 or G3 I might not let America get into the war IF America had an invasion fleet ready to retake the UK.

In my last game as Japan the UK fell to Sealion G2.  America has purchased Pacific heavy US1 so their small Atlantic navy was still at New York when UK fell.  Guess they were scared of me lol.  Thus Japan felt no pressure not to attack the DEI and all that on J2.

      @Funcioneta:

The chinamen can now park at Burma, so ignoring them a even worst idea than in later games

Can China now attack Burma in Global?  I thought I read Kwangtung (Hong Kong) was it.

Agreed. Just threatening sealion does great things for the axis
the margin of error for england is small on the first three turns also.

Great thing is even if you abort and only build up to three transports they are useful for retaking norway and taking lenningrad.

      I knew my math work wasn’t 100%!

What do they start with… 1 Brit infantry, 1 French…3 Fighters…get 1 inf from Canada, 1 Armor?  That’s a tactical bomber on the carrier.  Swordfish probably lol…

    • RE: Sealion counter

Sea Lion is difficult to counter.  England has to be with it from the start and Russia has to be able to conduct offensive action against Germany by Round 4 even if not attacked.  Then again Russia can come to India’s aid or back up them 18 INF with some useful offensive units also.

If America sees the transport fleet building they probably go Europe first.  Japan will turtle by just picking on China and or Siberia until Round 4 to “help” Germany and Italy hold England by keeping Charles Lindbergh and America neutral.

Lets go all SeaLion by both sides.  When I’m England it is my FEAR since England needs two turns to prepare.

Plus England builds 10 inf turn 1 and brings over folks from Canada and the plane from the med carrier.  Turn 2 England builds another 8 to ten infantry.  This puts about 22 at 2 =44 + 4 @ 4 = 16 for 60 there turn 3.

What’s Germany start with….30 bucks…builds a carrier, sub, and transport turn 1 in NW of W Germanty then 9 transports (63 IPC) and a couple infantry turn 2.

Gives you 22 units to land…14 Inf @1 = 12, 5 tanks @ 3 = 15, 3 art@2 = 6 +3 for inf = 9…14+15+9=38 plus perhaps 5 planes that have survived killing the Royal Navy and an off shore shot…about 53 plus that off shore shot?  Germany has the luxury of killing its low scoring infantry first.

Germany is probably better off attacking G3 than building 4 more transports and 8 more attacking infantry @1 for one landing on G4.  England even reduced to 22 IPC if things go TERRIBLY for them in Africa will get 7 more @ 2.

If England does anything else besides defend the island on UK1 Sea Lion probably succeeds.  By building that carrier and sinking the northern part of the Royal Navy Germany helps Italy in Africa something fierce by keeping the UK from building in South Africa at the very least.

Do I have the math right?  I’m watching Jay Leno doing this from memory lol
