    • RE: Top three favorite war movies

      Actually no.  The movie about the bogus Philadelphia Experiment is called (unsurprisingly) The Philadelphia Experiment.  In the movie The Final Countdown, the time-travel of the Nimitz isn’t caused by an invisibility-technology test gone haywire, it’s caused by the Nimitz running into a mysterious storm-like phenomenon.Â

      Consider the Final Countdown a reversal situation of ST:TNG episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise” where as the Philly Experiment a West Virginian born and raised monstrosity of Red Dwarf/ST: TNG “The Next Phase” and “We’ll Always Have Paris”…

      But hey, on a great note, at least scientists are actually getting close to being able to “cloak” an object…it would be nice to serve on a ship with that tech…Of course, I probably won’t be alive by the time it becomes testable…It took the rail gun, what 20 years to become feasible on some scale, and that’s still not anywhere close to usuable.

      @Imperious:

      by the Nimitz running into a mysterious storm-like phenomenon.Â

      Well that is all fiction and the narrative of events is not remotely accurate. It’s not a war movie. It’s another “Battleship”.

      Wake Island, as long as that movie was plot driven by actual events could be considered a war movie. If it’s another John Wayne schtick movie where he falls in love with a nurse, WHILE the setting is on wake, it is not a war movie.

      Movies that use the war as a backdrop for another story are not war movies.

      Glory is fiction then…it’s only about 20% accurate…300 is just a comic based on an inaccurate event…Gladiator was very fictional…Pearl Harbor was ridiculously fictional.  So how is Tora, Tora, Tora a war movie if it can’t be guaranteed to be accurate…oh wait, because its a MOVIE AND NOT A DOCUMENTARY!  Movie=fiction. Any conversation the Japanese had can’t be accounted for in full, therefore fiction…

      And not knowing the difference between the Final Countdown and the Philly Experiment is pretty sad (although they share one commonality…they both sucked).

    • RE: Prometheus

      For all you know… that’s exactly how Earth Started.
      Could you imagine??!?!
      Maybe George Lucas was right, and all those events did happen a long time ago in a galaxy far far away…

      I think Battlestar Galactica had it better planned out… It has happened before, it will happen again!

      That is ridiculous. Next thing this guys going to say that A New Hope isn’t a war movie.

      Any movie that directly links itself to Jar Jar Binks losses all credibility….It’s a Fantasy genre movie.

      @Imperious:

      War movies are where the story centers around the events of the battle,
      Most of the choices seen in this thread are other stories USING the backdrop of the war.
      Tora, Tora, Tora is the former.
      Kelly’s Hero’s is the latter and is not a war movie.
      Longest Day is the former
      Saving Private Ryan is the latter and is just a story that takes place during WW2

      So by your description, this means The Final Countdown counts as a war movie because it’s about Pearl Harbor?  War movies are not centered around battles…anybody that has been in combat knows there is more to tell than just the action of the fight…Read Thunder Below and you get a sense of the “story” that makes war movies…the engagements are just part of the action.  The relationship between the men (and now women) with a “backdrop” of war is the story, and are some of the best to tell.  The Hurt Locker isn’t a war movie either by your description… I know several coworkers that would love to smite your previous statement.

    • RE: If the confederates win at Antietam do they win the war?

      It was a war by attrition….Antietam would have had to been at least 2:1 ratio for the South to even gain an advantage.  The demolition of the forces on both side were great, but the South was not as well trained (but more aggressive during this time period), so in order to balance it out, I would think that’s a good guesstimation on what damage they would have had to do.  As mentioned before, leadership outside Lee was not as effective at fighting the Union.  And war weary north?  What does it say about the south when 2 states in the Confederacy have elections for 1864 and vote Lincoln? (votes didn’t count).
      I could see France possibly joining to help the south, but the 1850s/60s for England was of great intellectual movement forward, and I don’t know if England would be able to handle its own revolt if they sided with the South…But if France joined, that would have weakened their position against England and the Prussians, which probably would have led to an earlier demise of Napoleon III, and greatly affect European events.
      Finally, the industry factor was too much for the south to overcome…without great success in clearing the blockades, money for ships from outside contractors would have dried up and not have been able to keep up with the North’s ability to produce.

      If the south and the Union had come to terms, the South would face Post WWI Germany situations with inflation and supplies, and as noted by our first several years of existence, a Confederate government DOES NOT work…it borders on lawlessness.

      Everybody who worked on that movie should be blacklisted and forced to work craft services. That is as close as they should get to working a real movie.

      I’ll be sure to pass that on to some of my co-workers who were extras in the movie…

      …first Europe game (had played one global)….played as Germany…was a great learning experience, but thought I did well on the German defense line and Russian front…know I could have done better, but there’s always next time…hoping Italy doesn’t sack his navy next time…that was an eventual downfall…at least I gave America the bird!  4 bombers shot down and easily repelled Normandy invasion!

      @ABWorsham:

      The Eagles I believe have the best selling album of all time.

      ’
      They do have one within the top 5, but Dark Side of the Moon tops them not only on sales, but longevity in the Top 200 (spent like 800 weeks on it)….I’ll take Floyd over Eagles any day…

      If by American we mean anyone born in the Americas then Simon Bolivar is the winner hands down. If we are discussing United States history it is difficult to find one more deserving than George Washington. Without his efforts there would be no United States.

      So getting his arse handed to him in the French and Indian War doesn’t count against him?

      If the topic is greatest general in United States history then Robert E. Lee should not be considered

      Agreed…Last I checked, I think he switched sides, so whatever he did on “that” side, shouldn’t count.

      I’m more of a Pershing and Schwarzkopf guy myself (although I do thank Dwight for the freeways!)

      FMJ is decent, but it is by far not one of Kubrick’s best……would Dr. Strangelove be considered a war movie (GENTLEMEN! THERE IS NO FIGHTING IN THE WAR ROOM!)?  Not saying it’s his best, that is hands down Clockwork Orange.

    • Top 3 favorite Rock Groups!

      Saw Rock of Ages (frak’n fantastic by the way!), and it got me thinking…

      Beatles for sure, I mean, they transcend more than just music…and they played all different styles, and didn’t stick to one singular formula (Favorite song: Hey Jude)

      Need to sit back and relax? No problem…put on some Floyd and wash your troubles away. (Favorite song: High Hopes)

      The last was hard…grew up on Nirvana, U2, and Metallica…each has their pros and cons, but it has to be U2…If you want the modern day version of the Beatles, it would have to be them…I know people may flip trying to compare them to the Beatles, but if you want a band that has had more of a world wide effect in the last 30 years, it’s been them.

      not funny…had to prevent a guy from doing that once in a 42 game before…needless to say we never played with him ever again…not cool dude…not cool.

    • Top three favorite war movies

      Just wanted to see what people thought.  I put a couple up that I liked myself with a few random ones that I thought would pull votes.
      While not in any particular order:
      1)I’m a big fan of Apocalypse Now, and I think it just comes down to Coppola’s genius…
      2)Glory…some Civil war buffs may shake their heads, but I thought if it was going to give any justice to the men who fought for the Union, I thought it did a fantastic job and had a awesome score to boot.
      3) I could choose River Kwai or FMJ, but I’m going with other with Last of the Mohicans…ok, its a love flick, but its also tells a tale in a time period completely ignored by 99% of Americans, and for that, it gets my vote.
