    • Navel Battle w/ only AC fighters left.

      Here’s the senerio. ANZAC conducts a navel battle against Japan in SZ 54.

      ANZAC
      3 Fighters
      1 Cruiser

      JAPAN
      1 AC w/ 1 fighter & 1 tac
      1 Destroyer

      After the 3rd round of combat and miserable dice on both sides, ANZAC is left w/ 1 fighter. Japan has both planes left.

      Here’s the question -can ANZAC, as the attacker, retreat from the battle? This would leave the Japan planes w/o a place to land thus having to “ditch” the planes.

      @drummerinheat:

      That is an amazing Bunker!  The suitcases are a great touch!  I’m 90 miles west of Chicago.  Let me know if your bunker ever needs another member.  I love traveling!

      I sent you a PM. I’ve driven to Chicago & Kenosha to play. I don’t mind traveling either. This game is worth it.

      Never allow drinks or snacks on the game table. A Coke-a-Cola sunami will always end a good game.

      @taamvan:

      Thanks for sharing, it looks like a lot of fun.   Got to have a place to play games that are this big.

      Where in the USA do you live? (here KCK).

      I’m in west Michigan. (lower peninsula)

      VERY nice Maddox.

      Perhaps you could move to the UK and bring it with you?

      LOL….don’t tempt me…the way things are going here in the US…especially if Trump or Clinton is our next POTUS  :-o  …might be time to head your way. UK or Ireland.  :wink:

      I forgot about this sticky. I posted in the A&AG40 about the table & room I set up over time in my basement. Jut replaced the carpet, padding & some trim work. Now it’s just way too cozy to come back upstairs. Here’s the link.

      Yes….when we remember anyway.  :-D Still getting used to it. Last game, there was a lot of “Oh sh_t…I forgot!” followed by fellow players saying “Crap…me too.”  :wink:

    • My Global Table & Game Room "Bunker"

      I’ve shared this before but thought I’d post an update. I’ve made some improvements to “The Bunker” over the last few years w/ some A&A wall art, a display cabinet and recently I picked up a 1932 Philco radio that I hope to get working again. After adding the dice towers, magnetic scoreboard and putting the game board under Plexiglas and frame that is secured to the table, I topped it off two weeks ago by putting new carpet, padding & trim down. With the “Bunker Bar” for drinks & food it really makes for a very nice setup that makes game days quite nice. Now that I’ve managed to scare up some new A&A friends near & far through this forum, I’m hoping to play on a very regular basis. At least once a month or so. I just love this game!

    • RE: 1940 Global: 1st turn, 3 players = Having fun

      @teslas:

      @Thierry:

      @teslas:

      Stuff I said.

      Teslas,

      I will plead the fact that English is my second language (and French being my native), I do appreciate correction from my peers, it is true that “thru” and “through” has been a struggle for me.

      Looking forward to learn more.
      Thierry

      I must be ashamed for my countrymen (Americans), as it is their fault that the abomination “thru” has been spread.

      Hopefully I can teach you something about A&A at some point, and not just English pedantry  :p

      Actually, THRU is an abbreviation of the word through. It’s used on engineering drawings. Example: a hole dimension might read Ø.125 THRU which means drill a 1/8" hole all the way through. There’s your drafting standards lesson for the day.  :wink:

      To the OP of this thread, welcome to the wonderful world of Axis & Allies! I, like you, taught my children how to play and we have had lots of fun together over the years. I converted my basement family room into a game room we call “The Bunker”. I built a Global table, dice towers, magnetic score board and other fun items. My youngest son & I still get a game in. I have some fellow players I met THRU (pun intended) this great forum that game w/ me from time to time. It’ll take some time for you to completely grasp all the rules. But it sure is fun learning!

      Warm regards!

    • RE: Strafing

      I’ve been playing A&A for as long as it’s been around. Strafing has always meant using only air units to attack ground units. I typically use it to clear a territory that has only 1 or 2 inf. (less risk on the defense roll) so I can clear the way (“Can-opener” -new term for me. I like it.  :wink:) for a blitz move on the next turn or for a fellow team player to invade on their turn. What ever you call it, it can be a very effective tool.

      Attacking a ground force for only 1 or 2 rounds of combat with a ground/air force then retreating in order to simply reduce the number of opposing units -that’s always been called a “punch move” or “duke it out for a few rounds”. I’ve never heard that being called strafing.

    • RE: Submarine Defense Roll

      Very curious opinions & insights. If a player is spending all their money on subs….then they are not buying something else that they probably should. As far as a “game changer”? I think not, at least it hasn’t played out that way in my bunker.

    • Submarine Defense Roll

      Anyone else think the sub defense roll of 1 is a bit much? I’ve declared a house rule that subs attack and defend on a roll of 2 or less. Same as all my previous versions of A&A. I do like the sneak attack ability for the defending sub(s) though, so that part is staying.

    • RE: Sarnia war room game three.

      Well….nice video…I would have to say that was indeed very painful to see the USA played so poorly. As soon as I saw x-ports sitting fully loaded offshore of GB w/o protection I knew they were doomed w/ poor leadership. Interesting that ANZAC was able to roam so freely. Also…how was China able to wipe out Japans air force?  :-o Thanks for sharing this. It’s fun to see how others play. I’ve gone up against some folks that won’t make a move w/o their calculators and electronic apps and ridiculously large forces. Then are completely surprised when they lose. I’ve never played with those type of gadgets. I’ve been playing since A&A was introduced and always come up w/ a game plan, buy accordingly and go for it. I tend to try spontaneous battles as opportunity presents itself. (Such as fully loaded x-ports w/o protection  :wink: ) I win some & lose some…but always learn and have some serious fun. Thanks again!

    • RE: Blitzing into a neutral

      @SS:

      Thought the tank can only blitz on a combat move without ingaging in combat in first territory and then go into 2nd territory.

      That’s accurate too. A tank can blitz through one unoccupied enemy territory into a 2nd one to take over both. Or it can move through one friendly territory into a unoccupied enemy territory for the blitz. What the OP described above was blitzing into one unoccupied enemy territory on the combat move then moving one territory on the non-com into a friendly neutral, which one cannot do w/ the tank that was used in combat. (Blitzing is considered combat) I think the OP thought that b/c only one spaced was used on the tank in the combat move, he could use the 2nd move on the non-com, which is not the case. Once a tank used in combat, regardless of how many spaces it moved to get there, it cannot move again in the non-com.

    • RE: Blitzing into a neutral

      @Amon-Sul:

      but the tank s second move is in noncombat phase.

      There is no “second move” once a tank is used in combat. (In this case -blitzing) In the non-com move, only land units that were not used in combat can move.

    • RE: Blitzing into a neutral

      I don’t think that’s legal if you’re using the tank that “blitzed” Trans-jorden on the combat move. As stated before, I don’t think you can take control of a friendly neutral on the non-com move using a unit that was used in the combat move.

    • RE: Scramble against lone transports?

      @knp7765:

      Just curious, where did your US transports come from? You mentioned they moved 2 spaces. If they started from SZ 109, you could have used the United Kingdom naval base and moved them 3 spaces up to Sea Zone 125 and attacked Norway from there. That way you wouldn’t have to worry about the German fighters in Western Germany.

      They were actually coming from the NB in Gibraltar. There was a G sub in SZ 125. We had a chance to get a foot hold in Norway as Germany was doing quite well defending and counter attacking. The US & GB had liberated and lost France twice already. My son & I were playing our 12th game or so against grh2 who is quite the experienced Global player now. I’ve been playing A&A & all variants since the first one was released so I’m no “newbie”, but I think there comes a time when there’s just too much to a game and the revised rules are bordering that line. I don’t have to like it, but that’s the rules and I do love this game.

    • RE: Scramble against lone transports?

      That’s where I’m discovering there’s just too much to this game. In this situation, USA had two transports that moved 2 SZ’s to unload into an undefended Norway. Germany put up fighters from Berlin into the SZ. There is no navel battle, there is no land battle, just blitzing, yet scrambling fighters apparently stops that. Even if there were warships w/ the x-ports, there was no navel battle, so in my opinion, there was no battle for the fighters to be scrambled for. I just think that this is wrong. I know the game designers made it possible w/ the rules, but I think it just wrong.

    • RE: Scramble against lone transports?

      @ChocolatePancake:

      Yes, you can. After one round of combat, any surviving transports would have the option to retreat (if they have a valid retreat route).

      What combat? There is no navel battle taking place for the fighters to join in on.
