    • RE: Soviet Purchase Strategy

      Just so I’m being clear…as Russia I buy tanks on the 1st few rounds as long as Germany isn’t invading just yet. Even at that, once Germany steps off, it’s at least 3 more rounds before she’s knocking on Russia’s capital.  Russia can purchase 10 units of inf & art anytime. In two turns she can have 20 units + what ever original forces can turtle back to the capitol. By having the tanks I purchased in the beginning turns along with tac-bombers and any original starting units I have a decent chance at attacking or counterattacking Germany if the opportunity presents itself. (Especially if the dice Gods turn on Germany.) I have successfully used this strategy more than a few times. All it takes is one weak link in Germanys advance (such as not properly backing up the advancing front lines to counter attack a Russian counter attack) to stop dead Germanys advance. But as we all know…the best laid plans…if the dice are cold… ;-)

      @simon33:

      I tend to think the major reason for buying tanks would be to threaten a take down of Ukraine and/or Stalingrad. At least you can stop unit production for a turn. Is that it? Otherwise, I struggle to see the advantage.

      Really? You struggle to see the advantage of a stack of tanks rolling through the country side paired w/ tac-bombers? The offence & defensive power speaks for itself I think. Add that to a stack of infantry for fodder and you’ve got a pretty good chance of wiping out opposing forces then possibly blitzing the whole countryside on the next move. Can’t do that w/ a stack of more expensive air units. Jmho.

      Personally, I’m a big fan of tanks. My 1st round purchase for Russia is 3 tanks, 5 inf. & 1 art. If Germany stays out of Russia I’ll do it again on round 2. Only w/ 3 art. & 2 inf. Turn 3 might see the same unless buying a tac-bomber or two seem prudent. A stack of tanks paired w/ any available Tac-bombers give Russia great offense strike power if an opportunity presents itself once Germany invades.

      When I play Germany, I always buy 4-6 tanks every round if I’m not doing the Sea Lion thing.

    • RE: Artillery

      @Herr:

      On a related note: I think that the victims of a naval bombardment shouldn’t be able to shoot back at the troops landing - they are already dead.

      Nope––just wounded & shooting from a prone position.  :-D

      I am always amazed at the folks who assume that casualties (“victims”…hee-hee) from a navel bombardment do not return fire. I’ve been in a heated debate before, even after reading the rule book to him AND it would benefit him as he was the defender that could return fire! That particular exchange ended with “OK FINE! But I just don’t think it should be a rule!” to which I replied “OK then, never mind…don’t fire back.” He fired back.  :wink:

      Don’t people read the rule book before playing? I guess I know that answer to that question as I’m not sure I know all the rules by heart.

    • West Michigan G40 Players?

      Looking for some more players in West Michigan. (USA) I’m near Grand Haven. Can host as I do have my “Bunker” set for G40. Willing to drive too.
      Trying to set a Saturday game at least once a month. The games tend too turn into a weekend event so I always plan on continuing on Sunday and have plenty of food & drinks on hand. Have recently met some other forum members and we had a few great games. Let me know if you want to join in on the fun.

      Regards, Steve

    • RE: Clearing enemy AAA gns, & Air Attacking AAA gun

      I’m curious. Your question begs the question “Why would you?” If the only thing in that territory is AA guns, then why risk losing air units? They cannot shoot at plane flying over the territory on their way to elsewhere. AA guns cannot defend against land units so why not just wait & take them over when the territory is captured?

    • RE: Placing China units

      I actually put Japan markers (roundels) on the Chinese territories that Japan starts the game with. That way if those territories are liberated, we can remove the Japan marker and see the Chinese logo which indicates it is owned by China. Makes for an easy quick visual when counting IPC tally.

      Hey….I think I’ve been there before.  :wink: You didn’t have two tables then. I’m gonna have to make the trip this year for sure! Nice work SS.

    • RE: Global 1940 Gaming Table

      Nice work! My next addition to my table will be the cover too. The only thing I would say detracts from your table is that there is no “elbow” or “leaning” room. I’m the type of player that will sit at the table w/ my chin in my hands & elbows or forearms on the table to study the board. There is no room for that at all w/ your set up w/o knocking over something or upsetting a tray. That said, it’s still a great design! You’ll be having fun at that table for years to come! Nice work!

      Can’t US declare war on US1 if Japan declares on France J1?

      Yes. I believe that is correct.

    • RE: Paratrooper question

      @Kreuzfeld:

      The techrules in axis and allies are horrible, and always has been. In the old days, if you played with techs and usa rolled a 6 and a 6, on round 1, it was game over. No matter what.

      The only viable option for playing with tech is if you want to change the game balanace. Maybe one player is much better than the other, or you want to give each nation a certain tech at the beginning of the game, just to make it more interesting.

      I don’t understand why they havent fixt it yet.

      Because there’s nothing to “fix”. It’s not broke.  Your opinion that tech options are “horrible” is not shared by me. In the old days of rolling and 6 and another 6 (you’re referring to Heavy Bombers) most certainly did not mean game over. There are ways to counter that. Only inexperienced players would cry foul and throw in the towel when an opponent gained heavy bombers. Tech rules add a level of excitement and challenge to an already great game.

    • RE: My 1st Top 10 list

      Here’s a couple that I come across from time to time when I meet new players.

      1. Casualties from an attacking Navel bombardment cannot return fire. (Used on the defense roll)

      2. Navel Bombardment at the beginning each round of battle.

      Um….no.  :wink:

    • RE: USA 3rd turn DOW & factories

      @Larrie:

      @Maddog77:

      When the US declares war on it’s 3rd non-com phase, the minor complexes are immediately converted to major and then the US can place 8 units in eastern US on it place units phase, right? Or do the complexes get converted on US’s next turn?

        Curious as to where you came up with the number 8. As minors produce 3 units and majors 10 units.

      The particular game we were playing at that moment, the US had 8 units it wanted to place, assuming the complexes were able to be converted……but we had it all wrong anyway as we learned from this thread.

    • RE: USA 3rd turn DOW & factories

      The collect income phase comes after the mobilize units phase, so there is no way you are permitted to mobilize more than 3 units per complex in that situation. Triple A used to come with a disclaimer (maybe it still does, it’s been a while since I’ve downloaded it) that using the software did not mean you didn’t need the rulebook. I believe this is one of those occasions where just because the program says you can doesn’t mean it’s legal.

      Now this clears it up. Thanks for the clarification.

    • RE: USA 3rd turn DOW & factories

      so does that mean the US does not collect it’s NO’s. It say’s declare war at the beginning for the collect income phase. Is the beginning when you collect the cash? Just how much does the us collect then and when do the complexes get converted?

      @simon33:

      Kriegsmarine is looking strong with 15 subs + a handful of surface ships.

      What?!  :-o Seems to me that if Germany bought that many subs…then she doesn’t have near enough land units to successfully take Russia. I’ve never played a game where anybody wasted that kind of income on subs. Curious indeed.

    • RE: My Global Table & Game Room "Bunker"

      @pfc_pander:

      Love the M-1 Carbine, nice touch!

      It’s fully functional too. My Dad carried one in Korea (He was an artillery man during the war) I have all the attachments for it (30 round mags, bayonette, heat shield, oil tube, etc.) It’s a very fun small caliber weapon to shoot. I like how it adds to the whole war room atmosphere so it just has to be displayed on the wall. I keep a trigger lock on it because I have young children running about and the rest of my hunting rifles are locked up in the safe. If anyone comes across a nice WWII propaganda poster or gadget for sale (from any country) please let me know. I’m really ramping up my collection.

    • RE: Navel Battle w/ only AC fighters left.

      Thanks guys. That’s what I understood the rules to convey. My opponent thought that because it was a navel battle, there was no retreat. I explained that that was only true for  landings from sea, but he did not believe me.
