    • RE: Saburo Sakai's AAPacific Essays - #7 It All Looks So Good

I’m a newcomer to this site although I have been playing A&A for maybe twenty years now.  I got A&A Pacific a couple of years ago but unluckily  :-) my gaming group has always had more than three players available, so we tend to end up playing A&A revised and A&A Europe.

However, we do play Pacific now and then and we by the second Pacific session we had learned what Saburo Sakai lays out in this essay– Japan had better buy subs and India had better start stacking land forces up in anticipation of an India assault.  Couple that idea with the realization that territories such as New Britain are vital due to the Naval Base rule and you are well on your way to an enjoyable and hard fought Pacific campaign.  Cheers!!

    • RE: Fortress America and Conquest of the Empire

Used to play FA to take a break from A&A back in the late '80s and my friends and I had fun, but I don’t think we were really playing it correctly.  A couple of years ago a friend in my gaming group in Colorado picked up a copy of FA from ebay because we were all stuck in the Axis & Allies/Future Risk rut before we got copies of A&A Europe and Pacific.  We were all excited to play FA again and we had a decent game, but compared to the mechanics of A&A, the mechanics of FA seemed sluggish and counterintuitive.  We have played FA twice and no one is clamoring for an FA session anytime soon especially since we are now exploring new A&A terrain with Europe and Pacific.  We might use some of the FA pieces in a variant A&A scenario (motorized land vehicles).  In any case, you still have to love the “Saddam” picture on the box.  I’ve only played Conquest once, the new edition with the classic and the new rules (we played classic, but are looking forward to trying the new rules) and I enjoyed the game but my only (minor) complaint is that the new board is a little too large than necessary.  In my view, though, A&A revised still reigns supreme. :-)

    • RE: POLL:favorite player

I’d have to go with the U.S.– plenty of purchasing power and options.  The board looks completely different by USA’s turn, so flexibility and creative adjustment to the outcome of the first turn keeps USA on its toes.  Plus what’s not to love about getting to buy aircraft carriers anytime you want?  :-)

    • RE: Variant pieces

I looked into it and yeah, Table Tactics produced the pieces because the landing craft looked exactly how I remember– the cruisers, though looked like they came from the Central Powers expansion set.  I got a tip on another thread about Xeno games A&A expansion which also contains variant pieces and the rules governing them.

    • Variant pieces

I’ve played A&A for many years beginning with first edition and about seven years ago I played with some players in NYC that had some different pieces not included in the game.  The pieces were all color coded for every nationality and included (if memory serves me) landing craft and cruisers.  I have never seen these pieces since and haven’t been able to track down any info on them on the internet.  Anybody  out there seen or remember these pieces (and any others that might be in use?) :?
