      IMHO USA shouldn’t even get Mexico to begin with. Mexico should become part of USA led forces at the beginning of turn 4, after USA declares war on germany or vice versa. That’s 3 less IPCs for America, which isn’t a ton, but then they can’t build a minor IC there. Alaska is more risky for a minor IC, because Japan can hit it from SZ 6 in 1 turn.

      @knp7765:

      I actually think playing USA is actually pretty tough.  Sure they start out with the biggest income, but having to split that on two fronts is really hard.  You have to try and guess the right amount for each front or the Allies are screwed.  Going all out in one theater or the other isn’t really the answer either as the Axis can end up going hog-wild in the other theater and win with enough victory cities.

      USA generally can dump 90% + of their income in Pacific. If Germany goes for Russia, UK can slow them down, if Germany goes for UK, sure, US should start spending a bit in the theater but Russia will be very strong, meaning they have plenty of time to beat Japan senseless.

      @Pvt.Ryan:

      Alright even though I’m quite patriotic myself I hsve to be neutral here. I’m from the good Ol Red Whire n Blue myself but I have to say that wars arn’t won by a sinlge country (that is unless only two or less are involved). Britain, France, and Russia held of the central powers until America, Italy, and other nations could push the Germans over the edge. However I am more learned in WWII and I must say the turning point was when America and Russia entered. Otherwise Britain would have been destroyed along with all her Dominions.

      Of all the people to push the Central powers over the edge, Italy? All they did was stall Austria-Hungary, but with the state of Austria-Hungary, they weren’t helping the allies much. Italian military history has been mostly irrelevant since the Roman era, and Italians today aren’t really Romans anyways. In world war II they more or less accomplished nothing; their soldiers were not very motivated and the Germans were more relevant in the fighting in North Africa and Italy itself.

      @oztea:

      Kill fleets in 106 and 109 with 2 subs
      112 with sub and airpower, take the seazone with your navy and rely on scramble cover
      build 2 subs G1, likley in 112 to bolster it

      Really scares the big UK fleet, that you left alive so they are forced to protect it.
      They will have trouble just throwing it away at you knowing they wont aford another for a long time

      Also you killed all their transports (hopefully) and any destroyers that can reach 106

      In SZ 109 average dice & a scramble could mean you lose 2 ss and UK loses maybe a dd.

    • RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO

      @eudemonist:

      If it is your opinion that Russia and England can overpower Germany and Italy without any help from the Americans (which I strongly disagree with), it seems like Europe must necessarily be imbalanced, does it not?

      I agree, I personally see the European Axis in need of a boost. Italy usually gets shut down either from India moving over troops and amphibious assaulting or South Africa pumping out mechanized infantry, depending on what Germany does. and then once they begin retreating in Africa/middle east is about the time the US comes in to play, and then in another couple turns they have 8 American subs convoying them out of cash. Meanwhile if Germany goes Sea Lion, Russia is probably bearing down on Poland and Romania, and America is gearing up to liberate London. Or if Germany goes all out on Russia than Italy gets shut down even faster, meaning the UK and US are building up transports on Gibraltar or England where they can hit much of Europe.

      Honestly, Japan doesn’t have a chance if US goes all out Pacific, but then it should be a cakewalk for Germany and Italy. All they need is Cairo, London, Leningrad, and Stalingrad. Without US pressure, thats not far fetched.

      @Cmdr:

      I agree with Geist in-so-much as it was unimaginative American play, probably.

      Dadler, 3 games are not enough to really judge the balance of a game.  Especially this game, since this is the first ever in a long line of global games where KJF isnt only a good strategy, its really the only strategy that makes sense, given just how easy it is.

      Try having your team go full pacific with America.  Couple that with a Russian turtle and English assaults in Africa/Med to stop Italy from getting those NOs.  I think you’ll quickly discover one simple fact:  Russia and England can easily prevent Germany and Italy from getting out of hand.  Yes, you will have to give up some of your land, but since you are not playing to win in Europe, that’s a non-starter anyway.  England and Russia only have one objective:  Prevent an Axis Victory City Win.  Anything else can be yielded in the short term. (Short defined as less than 15 rounds of play.)

      Honestly Jennifer, I can’t see a Japanese player not being able to block the US for at least 3 turns once war is on if US goes all-out Pacific. By this time, Japan might only be 10 or so IPCs behind, and while ANZAC and UKP are minor issues, Japan should have pushed through much of China and can probably take the DEI before the Americans attack. While Japan will lose eventually, Germany could take UKE out by turn 3 or 4 and if Russia is all that stands in the way of Italy and Germany, Germany’s transports should be enough to quickly take Leningrad and their army in one or two turns should be pushing through eastern Europe. If Japan actually gets taken, by the time the US shifts to Europe Moscow is probably besieged.

      Now I’m not as experienced as you for sure, but I think Japan has it all right. The Allies cant afford to only fight in one theater.

      Maybe give Germany a NO on France, called REVENGE or NO VICHY FOR YOU or something. For holding NB + Paris + Southern France + Belgium-Netherlands. It might conflict with Italy not getting SFR, but I think Germany can put the $3 to use better anyways.

    • RE: Changes still needed to the game, IMHO

      I think adding to the starting German military heavily and giving Russia some sort of +2 inf Novosibrisk NO similar to the Europe one. The game doesn’t deal with the Soviet industry in Turkmenistan or Kazakistan or the Don River industry (although I suppose Southern Ukraine could count).

      Perhaps give the Germans more infantry and artillery, just not on the border with France? This way Germany can’t really knock out more British navy and take all of France safely, yet Germany will be at an initial advantage to the USSR even if they focus on helping Italy or beginning Sea Lion.

      And here’s where the USSR NO kicks in. It only would come in to effect when at war with Germany or Italy (and maybe Japan), but to show the mass recruitment of citizens, the Soviets should get a constant infantry flow from the Urals, where heavy Soviet Industry was moved during the war. Perhaps something like, 6 IPCs to spend or lose? That way they choose between a tank or two infantry, because no accumulation?

      I agree, Axis does feel a bit weak, and it seems Sea Lion or all out Russia are only feasable steps, but turn 1 Germany needs to buy Navy to do/feint Sea Lion and to get maximum use of their airforce against the Royal Navy. So I think some more German units, perhaps a presence in the Med (nothing fancy, a trans or something) would give Germany more options (such as helping Italy secure the med) because it always seems Italy becomes convoyed to death because almost all their territories are hit by convoy zones, if not all.

      @Cmdr:

      I sort of dislike the England split.  Other than for historical purposes, it does nothing but weaken England unrealistically.  I grant that the allies need to be weakened, but I disagree that it should be England.

      Rather:  Combine England and split America.  Drop the Major in India to Minor.  Combine the “original land” NO into 1 and leave it at 5 IPC.  England needs a round or two of London dump, and that would necessarily weaken the Indian offensive to make it easier on Japan…sounds like an awesome trade for me!  Kills two problems at once!  England gets the defense it needs against early Sea Lion, Japan gets the relief it needs in China!

      Great idea Geist!

      I disagree somewhat. The USA should feel like the most powerful country initially. They already have to juggle spending on two theatres, and the USA was connected, unlike Great Britain. Realistically Britain wasn’t organized enough to control their vast Empire that efficiently. I think India should feel hard to take for Japan and UK Europe might need a bit more pieces on the board. Perhaps move the battleship in SZ 110 or give it a bit more protection.

      @cminke:

      The holocaust- so many resources were diverted into genocide rather than helping the Wehrmacht.

      i just want to add to this

      just think about the oh how many greman jews they killed. imagine if theye were concriped in to the army insted…… i find it hard to belive but if hiler was just a litter smarter we would w=have lost the war!

      While it certainly would have helped the Axis cause, there is no possible way that would change the outcome of the war. Sure, 6 million people alive (or 11 million total) would be nice in the army, yet remember only a fraction of those people were men (Germans would never ever consider women in the army at this time period, they didn’t send the women to factories during the war and the German tank crews were horrified to find out at their first approach of Stalingrad they had shot women (the women were operating the AA guns)), many were old, disabled, or anti-Nazi in the first place, such as Communists or some Catholics.

      The sheer amount of people available to the Allies once the USA joined the war, along with India and China to some extent, means it would become a war of numbers, and Germany had a numerical advantage over Poland, Denmark, Norway, and France, but not the Soviets or Americans or British,

    • RE: Dreadful Axis Mistakes

      I am fairly well-read on Germany, so I can offer my own opinion on them, but as for Japan, all I really can say is Pearl Harbor?

      Germany–
      Stopping the bombing of Britain- British morale was in decline during the bombing, and despite what Axis and Allies represents, strategic bombing raids are pretty effective. With Britain being bombed, more Allied planes had to be focused on defense and less attacks on Germany. However, this mistake isn’t very severe, because Germany didn’t have the industrial capacity to match Britain plane for plane forever, especially with the UK’s colonies.

      Calling off the attack on Moscow, which led to…

      Capture of Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Moscow simultaneously- Huge mistake. Hitler, in his infinite wisdom, decided he needed three important cities, and that he had the capacity to take all three at the same time. The Germans were losing numerical superiority as more and more Russians from the far east were redeployed.

      Stalingrad- Bombing the daylights out of the city created so much rubble that the Soviet troops could hide and fight an attrition war with the Germans. Without defined parameters, German tanks were easily stuck in what used to be streets and were easy prey for antitank weapons.

      Inferior tank designs- The T-34  Soviet tank, while less manuverable and operated by inexperienced crews, was strong enough to resist shells of some German tank models completely. German tank crews were disheartened to find out in one incident, after they hit a T-34 and surrounded it, the surrendered Soviet crew was uninjured, just dazed from the impact, and the tank was fully operational. While this would be remedied with the Tiger tank, it was too late in the war.

      At one point in the seige of Stalingrad, Hitler was so desperate to achieve victory he ordered experienced tank crews be armed with pistols and act as infantry. This cost the Germans immensley in terms of valuable soldiers.

      The surrounding of the 6th army. Rather than place competent commanders, Hitler promoted those who followed orders, so when the 6th German army was counterattacked outside of Stalingrad, Field Marshal Paulus, rather than assemble a quick mechanized force of tanks and half-tracks which could have possibly repelled the disorganized Soviet attack, he patiently waited for orders from Fuhrer headquarters, which led to the defeat at Stalingrad.

      The holocaust- so many resources were diverted into genocide rather than helping the Wehrmacht.

      In general, Barbarossa was a huge mistake. Soviet industry was simply moved from the Ukraine and Belorussia to the Urals, and Soviet tank production was vastly superior to German tank production, something Hitler refused to believe.
